Hey guys, just wanted to share this beauty I got to see and sit in today.

This is my boss' 1988 BMW Z1, mint condition and the mileage as of today is indeed 15831 miles. It was imported from South Africa (the cars there are RHD, but this is LHD so its not as rare there). Also, this car originally belonged to Mary Quant if anyone cares; she designed the first mini skirt.

The sweet thing about this car is that the doors electronically slide downwards into the lower part of the frame with a touch of a button and it also has a functional rear diffuser. 8000 made, 170 HP, 2800 lb.. Kinda slow but still sweet.

Thanks for the post, never seen one of those.

How does the door work? (up and down, or is that the way it is)

Yeah it goes up and down into the frame. The picture you see there is when it is down already. The hole you see there next to the door is where you stick your key in. But, when it is unlocked, you can press the keyhole with your finger and it opens/closes the door. They even have arrow stickers as seen in the pictures haha..

Yeah, just like that! Very futuristic for 1988.. I don't know what he personally paid for it, but brand new its about 42, and because of its rarity, roughly the same these days depending on its condition.

Nice looking car, and I love how the doors work. Was it a pain to get in and out of? The doors don't look like they go down all that far.

The reason it is an LHD car is because the Z1 was only sold in Germany and Italy. So it would have been imported from one of these two countries to South Africa before being imported to North America.

i don't know why, but I find it interesting that the fuel gauge is 'backwards' from what I'd be used to and it uses an 'R' for empty... couldn't think of what the R stands for - 'leer' is German for empty.

R = "reserve"

Been shipped more miles than driven. With the doors up it is a far better looking car, never see another around here.

Leave it to Top Gear to really get the juice on this unique car, one assumes your boss is not dating younger girls:

Maybe at first, but it's one of those things you would get used to just fine.

Ah yes, it was from Germany I believe (since most of em do come from there too). My boss is half German, half Irish.

^^
And no, he doesn't date younger haha.. :D

awesome post!

honestly I am not a big fan of the look of this car but rare either way.

I had an 88 325 for my first car and it had the R as well. I loved my heated cloth seats.
