On my PC, I'm having problems accessing a CD that's in the CD tray. When I open My Computer, the D: drive is there, but when I double click the icon, it asks for me to insert a CD into the drive. Well... that's all fine and dandy, however there already IS a CD in the drive. I tried reinstalling the CD-ROM drivers, that didn't do it. I checked the BIOS -- nothing. I checked the cables and the power cables running from the motherboard to the drive and vice-versa.

I'm stumped. Windows see's the drive, yet I'm unable to access the disc. I've tried numerious discs and nothing. When I put the cd in the drive, it fires up -- just no data communication.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

0h n03s! H4x0rz on t3h p3t3rz c0mput4r!

Seriously through Peter, chances are good that there is a laser problem with the drive. Yank it and put a new one in, you did everything else....

And make sure you try a few different brands of disks to make sure that its not a disk problem.

I have the exact same problem, except both my dvd drive AND my cd drive don't recognize any cd's. I reinstalled both drivers, several times, and nothing seems to work.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. Weapon_R, hopefully you get things sorted out, looks like I may just have a defunct drive. I think Memory Express has a sale on right now -- think I'll go get a new drive and see if that works. :)

Did you install ASPI Drivers? thats what I had to do on my machine

I installed the drivers for the CD-ROM itself -- much like I had done a week before (when it was working fine). ASPI drivers? Within Windows 98?

I believe that XP doesnt come with the drivers, but win 98 should, but they are call ASPI drivers, prolly woudn't hurt to install them and see if it works

In device manager try changing the IDE ATA/ATAPI settings, thats worked for me in the past

ASPI drivers are usually only required for CD writing software. Windows has built in drivers for all IDE cd-rom drives since windows 98 and possible windows 95 (don't even need DOS drivers). There's really nothing to reinstall :).

It's most likely hardware.

I use an Apple computer for my everyday work. Since the only OS I could "find" in my place was Win 98 -- I decided to install it on my server type computer thingy. :)
