Still looking for a car, just thought you guys could maybe name off some cars that are sporty, sexy, reliable yet capable in some way on snow. So far, only thing that comes to mind is an Audi S4. Also, no more than $70,000 with some good options.

Oh and maybe something better than a Rover on gas ;)

Get a beater for snow and ball it out for the 2 months of summer in Calgary?

I like 3's? M3 is out of your price range unless you're going used...

ported/pullied/exhaust/intake/tune 03/04 cobra vert - 315/17 3 of the 4seasons, 245/17 Blizzaks for the winter.

It's what I'm doing - 500rwhp makes a great daily beater

Yea, I was looking at the M3's only problem is, for my age 2 cars is ridiculous regardless the 2nd one.

What does age have to do with anything? It's ridiculous I have 6 cars and my slowest one is 500rwhp at 27. If you like cars and can afford it (assuming you're not flushing money down the toilet and have property, etc..) who cares how old you are.

S4 is a great practicle choice, however I still wouldn't discount either a used m5 or a used E9x m3. The m3 really is a phenomenal vehicle. The s4 would be the best on gas.

is it possible to get a used GTR for under 70 grand?

S4 isn't a sports coupe... The S5 is however :D Has more power than the S4 too, 354bhp vs 333bhp. But I don't know if you can get it for less than 70k with decent options. Starts at $65900 though. Used one might come into your price range. Other than that, you can consider the upcoming CTS-V coupe, shouldn't be too much more than the sedan model which is like 62k. Just throw winters on it and you should be fine. Actually you should be fine with winters on most coupes, just got to worry about height clearance. If you go used, you can always get a C4S, everybody says they are phenomenal in the snow also.

335 is pretty good deal for $70K.

Go down to the states and grab a gtr

They are great, but brand new the S4 is a much better car than the 335i. Check out Car & Driver and Motortrend's matchup of the two if you don't agree. Used, I prefer the 335i as its a better car cheaper, cheaper to maintain. The C63 and Lexus IS-F is a nightmare in winter even with winter tires, the M3 might be out of your price range new unless you import a slightly used (>15k miles) E90 M3.

I'd personally get either a low mileage Nissan GTR from the US, which is simply the best car bang for buck being made right now with insane handling, speed, comfort and technology, or a low mileage 996 Porsche 911 Turbo, which is highly capable in winter with its AWD, is pretty reliable, and has a bulletproof engine (much better than the unreliable RMS-failure prone N/A 996 911 Carerra).

A GTR just speaks volumes for the quality and design of its parts. Why buy a C63 AMG or M3 when the GTR is available in the US? Besides the lack of 4 doors, the GTR's amazing AWD system creates it to be the greatest car made for driveability in the winter or summer, track or highway, period (yes it can be stiff and bumpy, but leather seats mitigate this pretty well).

+1

I have said it before. At altitude the stock 335i will dust most cars. Add an upgrade chip like Dinan or Vishnu and it is really not fair comparison. S4 is a great car but not fun to drive as the 335i.

Good luck,

There is always a used RS4, that might be in the price range

GTR > Porsche. Even a 996TT.

I don't know about that. IMO the only thing the GTR has going for it is performance and price point. You can get almost the same performance from a 997TT and a tonne more prestige.

Also the Porsche would be a way better daily driver

The M3 with winter tires is an excellent DD. I drove mine to Montana many times in the winter with no problems.

a 997TT is a different story, pre-owned its more expensive than 70k and brand new it's a better car but WAY more expensive (even though the GTR beat a 997TT on many different tracks [http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/136972-2010-gtr-vs-997-2-gt3-rs-vs-997-2-turbo.html]). I said a GTR is better than a 996TT used, which it is, for performance. For daily driveability a 996TT is less harsh and probably costs less to maintain (see repair costs here http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/nissan-gtr/163086-gtr-daily-driver.html). But its not as fast a GTR or handles as well, and here, Porsche's are more common than a GTR.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a 2009 M3 for $64k w/ nice wheels awesome color and lowered suspension. Comes with some winter rubber too. Only 12,000km. Also has warranty until 2014.

Does anyone think this is too good to be true?

I know the car you are talking about and I think it is a good buy but does not have leather. Has the speed cloth interior. If you don't mind the interior then yes its a good buy.

So for 10 months out of the year you have to drive a rusted old beater? I dont get that, I see people storing their 3 series bmws and driving these POS's all winter. If its not an exotic it can be driven 12 months out of the year.

I'm fine with sacrificing leather. Extended warranty, 3 sets of wheels and tires as well as a desirable color sounds good to me.

I'm with you on that one. Why would I want to drive a POS 80% of the time? Unless it's a sports car that is too low to navigate the ruts on our awesome wintertime side streets, put on some winter rubber and drive the car!

I drive my 510hp supercharged jag with 20 inch rims all winter. put some 3M on and some decent winters and your good to go.

I think pretty much anything can/should be driven year round. My dads only car at the moment is a M Roadster, does fine in the winter from what I have seen, better than my moms car and mine.

I park in the Palliser Parkade most days, and there's a black XF-R there every day year-round, and there's frequently a black Continental GT beside him, even in the winter. Now that's winter driving a beast!

Hell I'd even take out my Z in winter with some good winter tires offcourse. It's a car it's meant to be driven. Yea obviously once I get an exotic, that'll be a diff story though. But everything else enjoy it.
