We have a corner lot with a West facing backyard and a North facing side yard. I have no idea as to what grows/looks best there so if you guys have any ideas or better yet, pictures of your yard for inspiration, that would be awesome!

So Beyonders...what's your yard look like? and what kind of plants/trees are those?

I have a west facing backyard and I built a 16'x12' ground level deck which takes about 1/4 of the space back there... lol...

I have a mature (25 yr old) apple tree in the SW corner of the backyard which gives lots of shade in the summer & lots of fruit in the fall... then my wife plants sunflowers in the SE corner against the house which do really well back there (lots of moisture from nearby downspout).

Other than that, lots of lawn back there.

My parents have the exact same type lot, here are a few pics of their yard. I know absolutely nothing about plants or what looks good but maybe you can identify some things here and see what you think looks good lol:

Thats what your yard looks like when you live in a house for 15 years and have time to work on it and are old.

Whats a young working/busy persons yard look like?

Plus has anyone noticed with the rain and warm weather the explosion of dandylions that happened over night? The city is yellow.....

Our yard is half done, and we've been here five years. We still need to finishing adding mulch. I finished my underground sprinklers although the grass is having a hard time healing where I dug the lines.

Our yard faces NE. We have an area that gets full sun and a tree we planted back there grows great. We've also noticed that on the south side of yard, the grass grows really green and thick there.

It's amazing what people can do with their yards. I don't have very much skills in this area. I had a lil' patch on the side and had some shurbs but those damn bunnies ruined it all.

urrrghh anyhoo...pictures would be nice. I'd like to get an idea what will look nice on my yard.:banghead: :banghead:

Looks like a high maintenance nightmare... A bit over the top for me, but very nice nonetheless.

That is a nice lawn Mitsu! I just started to appreciate gardening and I'm in the midst of taking care of my parents' lawn.

What can I do to get the grass green and luscious?

Also, I noticed that if I carpetbomb the lawn with weed killer, these bastards grow stronger than ever. What I do now is literally, pull each one out from the root.

It's a pain in the ass when there's an army but after that gongshow and you watch your lawn like a hawk, it's not that bad.

My yard looks retarded. My wifes small 3'6" x 8' garden is its only redeeming feature.

bad.

If you're asking me, you're asking the wrong person lol. That is my parents yard and I unfortunately can't take any credit for how nice it is at all. I used to mow the lawn, but believe it or not I am somewhat allergic to grass (sounds like the perfect excuse but its actually quite uncomfortable haha).

For the lawn though, as far as I know, they just aerate it in the spring, fertilize it, and water it on a regular basis. No special seeds or anything like that :) . The entire yard is also rigged with an underground sprinkler system which makes things easier.

My yard is retarded as well, but I'm looking to get some concrete work done, and that'll start it on the path to respectability. Then maybe work on the lawn and some planters.

I'd post pics of my yard... but after mitsu's parents house and the fact you guys would find out im not a beyond baller, i probably wont :poosie:

No trees in my yard - I have a corner lot, south facing back yard and get shitloads of sun. I back onto the local environmental reserve, so the nearest house behind my lot is probably about... 500ft or so away.

My lot is on a cross grade - from one side of my yard to the other i have a 5ft difference in elevation. I have a 10x10 deck' off the back of my house that steps down onto a 14x16' exposed agg patio. Next to it, I have a 14x16' vegetable garden with a treated wood retaining wall around it. The rest of my yard (about 40ft from the patio to the back fence) is all grass. The only maintenance I wanted to do is taking care of the lawn and taking care of a vegetable garden.

I could use some suggestions for our new place as well.
Anyone have any ideas?
We were thinking pergolas and adding to the existing rock wall. What kind of trees would you suggest for privacy?
Thanks

You can always plant a nice pine tree for those Christmas-esque moments.

I don't think there's a privacy 'tree'... It's more like a 'bush' or 'hedges.'

You can always get an apple tree! I recently did that and planted it in my parents backyard as a starter for the landscaping project I have in mind.

By the way... Nice house, bastard. :D

in2fst4u, I would pretty much blow my entire landscaping budget on trees if I had your place. Nice big yard, but kind of barren at the moment. For the further out areas I'd probably get poplars or something fast growing so you'll have some monsters near the perimeter.

I'd probably also plant some of it with some native aspens and such that will grow just find on they're own here and let those areas go pretty much wild (nice wind break, no maintenance/mowing)

If you want a wind break for any of those decks, put up a row of columnar aspens which will get nice and tall really quickly but stay tidy.

Are you near the boondocks because if it's hella windy, you can plant these suckers as 'fences':

Great ideas and we will take your advice. Native aspens would make a great addition to the very northwest of the yard without question and the columnar aspens would be good to "wrap" the entire property.

Funny you mentioned wind....we took possession 14 days ago and the wind has not stopped out here, hence the reason we are looking for a wind break of some sort.

LMAO so not confident about posting pics of my yard LOL ... but if I am motivated enough I will shoot some pics tonight ...
double-sized lot, 50'W x 100'L ... house is an old ranch house last modified in the 1940's ... so LOTS of very well developed trees and bushes ... carrigana and lilac bushes around the perimeter, most of them up to and above 8' hihg - I even have a carrigana that is as big as one of the mature poplar trees ... and yes trees, lots of them ... I think my last cont of mature trees was about 30-40, varying - poplar, spruce, pine, crab apple, ash... I'm sure just the verbal description can tell you why I purchased this place - super mature huge yard with plenty of shade and sunshine. I have an old picnic table and fireplace, the old outhouse has been converted into my garden shed, and my tiny lil garage...
Yard was well maintained by original owners, but when her hubby died about 8 years ago the yard turned to shit ... and she sold to the realtor, who rented it out for about 2-3 years ... renters = NO MAINTENANCE
I've spent the last couple months filling up my pickup with yard waste ... leaves, deadwood, pine needles, pine cones ... it's a never ending battle, but it is already looking much better than it was ... now if only I could get rid of a few lawn ornaments AKA old vehicles...

I've seen that yard first hand and it is truly award winning. Mark's Mom spends a ton of time and hard work to keep it like that. It's like a little oasis. I could never maintain something like that. But here is my feeble attempt. Spent the last two weekends getting our pond back up and running and adding some lights. We're on a corner lot and I just re did the whole yard with new soil and seed. Brought in 10 yards and had a bobcat level everything. The little yard is one everyone walks by, so I just sodded that one and added all the lights and water garden.

Nice yards guys. Let me know if you have any questions about grass adn yard maintainance.. I worked in the industry for a few years, and managed a few branches for the big company in town. I also have my Alberta Pesticide License...though I am forgetting things fast...so ask quick.

I've built my little yard from the ground up since last year. It's a small yard, and my first, so it's pretty modest. I'll see fi I can snap a few pic's.

The best basic maintainence schedule for your grass is to water twice a week for an hour, and mow twice a week at 2.5 inches. If you do this, you can leave the clippings in the grass and never have to bag any clippings. It's a good natural mulch layer. Grass is very resilient, most times, this is all that is needed beyond a few good fertilizations.

I could definitely use some advice to get my yard in shape ... very large yard, lots of mature trees (poplar, ash, pine/evergreen) ... Back yard is crap because of the trees, dogs, trampoline, and the kid. Now that we have some decent weather I will snap some pics after work and post em up ... see if u got any advice to fix it up?

Rule number 1) If you have a dog, and let them pee on the lawn, you will have dead patches on the lawn with nice dark green rings around them (the urea from the urine makes it green). So if it's not a big deal, then no worries. You can lessen the damage of you water down the pee spot after they mark their territory, but you just can't fight the laws or nature...dog urine kills grass.

Lets see the pic's and go from there.
