View Full Version : Mustang guys.... project car question

Hi guys,

I am starting to think about picking up my first proper project car. A garage queen I can build up and then drive the piss out of. As much as all the other cars have piqued my interest I have LOVED the mustangs. I was one of those 16 year old kids with a mustang hat and poster on his wall. Now that I am able to afford to do some of this it is a lot harder to actually pull the trigger.

Armchair tuning is a lot easier than this!

My problem is I am always in love with the latest and greatest and with the announcement of a 5.0L 2011 I really want one of those. I have always had a soft spot for the terminator but they seem really expensive for an older used mustang.

The 4.6 to me doesnt seem like the best platform and an 80's LX foxbody doesnt really appeal to me. Personally I would like a 1996-2003 body style with a 5.0 in it. Can you swap one of those in? What else could I be looking at to do? It wont be a daily driver and if it takes me a year so be it.

edit: Good example, I know the interior sucks but I love the exterior of these. 40th Anniversary stang. Would like a decent engine in it though (maybe there is one but what do I look for).

I had a 1997 Mustang GT with the 4.6L Engine. Bought new and the next day the mods began.

First thing went in was 4.10 gears, few days later the Super Charger and headers where put in. Also H-pipe installed with the cats out. It ran mid 12's at the track here.

It was a fun car to drive till a year later some B!tch ran a red light and T-Boned it. RIP.....

^^ '97 did they have the 4.6? Manual? What power do you figure you were putting down?

'96 was the last year of the 5.0 right? it had the older looking style that KIND OF looked like this.

first of all 94-98 is one body style, and 99-04 is another body style.

The 5.0 engine was last seen in the 95 gt, and maybe the 96 gt as well, im not sure right now. So you could find a 5.0 in the body style you like without doing the swap.

And you CAN swap a 5.0 into the 99-04 body style as well.

87-93 Gt's with the 5.0 and 5sp are sick cars and you can make them really fast for really cheap. 10,000cdn can get you very good numbers, and that includes a list of mods AND the car....you can find good condition foxbodies for around 5g.

Thanks for the correction. Your right. They had they had the same body but got rid of the old 5.0 back then.

I guess really I would like to pick up a 99+ mustang, just feel that the engines are a POS. I would like to get a 5.0 or even Ford Racing 5.4 in there. Dont want a $10,000 engine though.

I think the GT500's had the 5.4 so I am not sure if there is a direct bolt up if I found a wrecked F150.

I think '96 was the last year for the 5.0L, when i bought mine in 97' they started to put the 4.6L in it. It was a 5 spd manual.

I had TOMA Dyno it. Stock it put down 196 RWHP.:( With the mods it was close to 350 RWHP.

^^ wow. :(

Thanks for the input. I may have to look at a 5.4 swap.

5.4 swap would be expensive as hell

Why not build the 4.6 and put a stroker in it?

http://www.wmsracing.com/wmsweb/product2780.html

Honestly bro the 4.6 engines arent that bad at all... Your not gonna get a 5.0 engine in there, Their absolute shit and that car is heavy as piss, If you did a stroker to a 5.8 with a Windsor block youd have some fun for sure and a hella fast car.

WMS has a 97 Cobra engine right now I beleive with super low kms for sale? Give them a shout and theyll give u a price over the phone im sure.

If you want a fast car tho, Save your money building the GT and just get the Cobra.

I have a feeling im gonna be swapping the Bullitt in the close future and get myself a low KM stock to lightly modified terminator from the states.

I think you should just buy a cobra. For the extra cash, you get a hell of alot more car.

I was thinking of pickin up a Mach 1 this summer. Although not a cobra, I really do enjoy the drive. And the engine makes fantastic noise.

Just buy a 1994-1995 gt, and get a trickflow engine kit. I picked up my 1994 for 3000 bucks last year. 5.0 is not a peice of shit hahah neither is the 4.6. The 4.6 with 32v heads and a kenne bell is a beast, but you can buy a 5.0 fox or sn-95 for cheap and build that engine to the same power. Reading up on the engine and getting some good advice is really important though.

What sort of cash would I be looking at for a Cobra out of the US?

In Canada IF you can find one they seem to be mid 20's

You might want to ask questions on performance-shop.com
Lots of local people there with Stangs.

1995 was the last year for the 5.0 .

I sold mine a year ago.I REALLY miss it. The wife doesn't ..:(

If you want to drag race buy a 96-98 cobra(solid axle). If you want to auto-x, road race or want a good ride on the street buy a later model cobra with IRS

I own both a 96 GT and a 96 Cobra, the GT is weaksauce

The 4.6 DOHC engine in the cobras is an absolute riot to beat on, and very tame for street use.... Nothing better than a v8 revving upto 7k :) Not to mention that they respond to boost very well... 96-98 even better. They have an aluminum block that was cast in italy, as opposed to the inferior windsor alum block... termi's have a cast iron block.

If your local and want to go for a spin PM me!

seems like he wants to spend around 10 grand, you wont get a Cobra for that much, even out of the states you are going to pay 20 grand.

Just go with a 1999-03 GT, my neighbour just got a 2000 gt 61 000km for 6500 bux. you can make it as fast as a cobra for $10 000 all in.

For a low mileage, non-heavily modded (personally, I wouldn't want one that's running crazy mods, ported/pullied/exhaust/intake/tune is as far as I'd trust most people) you're looking low to high 20s, whether you bring it from the US or buy it here.

I'm in the same boat as you......always wanted a stang, collected everything mustang (you should see my basement - books, diecast, literature, Shelby Chili, etc.) and was finally able to have some $$ aside to pick one up. Now, i have mustang A.D.D...

Been through an 07 GT500 coupe (had to sell due to the arrival of our twins), a 98 Altantic blue cobra ragtop for part of a summer and now, i've got an 04 terminator ragtop. As usual, timing is wreaking havoc with me (yet again) as the 08 GT500 ragtop i've been chasing is suddenly available. I'm torn whether to sell the terminator (christ, i just got AB plates on it Monday) as the wife likes it.....but the shelby would have more room in it for the kids...

PM if you might be interested at all in it....26k miles, completely stock, owned by a 62 year old guy who kept it in Palm Springs, torch red, new tires (Rikon Raptors) that have about 1500 miles on them...only belmish is a cracked fog light lense (i have a new one, just haven't had time to put it on yet)...I was gonna put her up on the marketplace after the long weekend once i'm back..

There is no cheap way to do an engine swap.

You'll spend 10g's by the time it's done.

Sometimes you find complete take-out motors, engine/trans.wiring/computer, and they run about 10k for a supercharged Cobra motor.

 OMFG are those even street legal? I was told they werent. I wanted to make the terminator into that car. Fucking Gran Tourism 3 where that is the only car I used.

How much would I have to stretch the budget.....

FYI I am not looking to cheap out. I could probably afford up to $30,000 without too much problems. It is just that if I can get one for 16 and have a year to tinker that is more of the point of this. Now I dont want bagged on so if I got something mint it would be great. But more money out means less money in and less tinker time. A little opposite of what I want to do.

I asked him how much for the car about an hour ago and he said he is asking $40K USD.

It is a difficult car to value, only 300 sold (I believe). He said that two sold at Barrett Jackson last year. One for $66K and the other for $47K.

no you cant, trust me and 2EFENFAST, we looked everywhere and accually purchased ours not even a month ago. And this isnt the best time to be looking for one.

if you can buy it for 18k CAN here and registered you will have to buy it there for like 14-15, and a 14-15k cobra is a POS with tons of miles!

Oh ya and if you can own a cobra for 18k in calgary that is registered, you can make 10 grand easily by selling it here. If that was true I would be in the states right now buying another one.

Why not buy a Mach 1? Kinda a good cross between a cobra and GT. Lots of bolt ons availaible.

Cos
05-20-2010, 08:51 PM
^^ To be honest I am really confused what I want.

If money was no object I would buy a terminator or that Cobra R because that is the EXACT car that made me fall in love with Mustang's. However money IS an object to me so I am really still looking around. A nice Mach 1 and do some work may be a good idea. I have also seen a few year old Shelby that isnt too bad a price. I'll let this thread ride but I am just going to have to look around.

Question for you people in the know, by the way no matter what I buy it will be S/C or come S/C.

If I bought a 1999-2003 GT (which I think has the 2V 4.6) how does it handle mods.

Same question but for the 4.6 in the 2004-2009 GT's. I know they can handle it but how far off am I really going to be.

If I took a GT and did a lot of work to it am I going to be getting closer to the GT500/Cobra/etc or no matter what I just cant replicate it. Are we talking STI - WRX or are we talking Ford Focus = Focus RS.

yep, and these cars arn't exactly ones I'd want to own if they'd been beat to snot or had lots of stories. Just look on SVTP at the number of people who get "screwed" buying a used one - they think initially they got a screaming deal, then they realize how much work it needs.

Then you've got to weed out the ones that read like "Never raced. Ported blower, new injectors, dual GT fuel pumps, 2.76 pulley, nitrous hookup, etc......"

Then you've got the ones that were modded to the moon that get de-modded and claim they're stock as a rock.

etc....

Bottom line, for < 18k I'd be totally leery of the car.

Heck, here's just a handful of problems i had on mine:

- wrong size pulley
- tune for 93 octane and wrong size pulley
- oem catback with welded in dynocrap mufflers that were leaking at all the joints
- wrong size belt
- oem plugs still

and the list goes on and on ... I'm just thankful it had never been run very hard (still had stock tires and minimal splatters of rubber in the rear wells), or I might have bad problems at the moment

Shlade

Cos,

From personal experience.. The 2V 4.6 is gutless, even with mods. To get any potential out of your mods I suggest getting a tune for it, SCT will definetly do the trick. You dont need crazy dyno tuning and money blown on that shit unless you get it supercharged right away.

The 96-98 are very hard to find with low kms, and the 99-04 you can find semi decent but not the greatest!

the 2001 and up I beleive had the PI heads which really put the ponies out! If you plan on getting a 96-98 GT I highly reccomend getting the PI heads installed! You wont look back at all. (PI Heads means Power Improved heads) Easily gain 45-50hp easy with that install.

I've seen quite a few nice ones goes at dealer auctions in the US with around 40-60k miles for anywhere from $16k to $20k US with low miles. There's still deals to be had in the US, and remember you don't pay duty importing these Stangs! Lower mileage ones are more money, but he just wants a nice weekend toy to build. These would be perfect for him IMO

But most of those (atleast the ones I clicked) are high mileage ... I'd rather pay a few thousand more and get one with 10k miles vs 70k. Not to mention unusual ad descriptions like

"Car feels like a good 500 RWHP 11 sec. car all day long"

rather than state what it dyno'd at, we say 'feels like' .... red flag right there. And sure, you can say if they ported the blower and pullied and whatnot they definately had it dyno tuned, but I"ve seen case after case where owners just slapped on mods and didn't even use a canned tune. buyer beware basically, but to a really large extent with these cars.

just my 2cents

btw, by "clean 03", I'm assuming you missed this line

Recently put BRAND NEW crate motor from Ford in the vehicle tha has maybe 10 miles on it!

Yeaaaaaaaaaa, I'm sure this car wasn't abused or has other problems.

yeah didn't see that. I was just saying, you can get plenty of 60k - 70k mile ones for under 20k imported. If you want 30k mile ones it'll cost a little more, but those Cobra engines are pretty bulletproof either way

If they're properly tuned, no question. But if they've been tuned by a hacker, or left stock with a boat load of mods, better watch out ..... there seem to be quite a few blown engines on SVTP because of those 2 reasons.

but anywho, it just agrees with our point above - if you want a low mileage, non-beat-on cobra that doesn't have a sketch past, you're looking, realistically, low to mid/high 20s (depending on what you want and where yuo're buying it from).

If you're willing to take anything, then sure, you can go lower, but I'd be anticipating $$$ for maintenance/repairs .... heck, I've spent $1400 or so on mine already just to fix the previous owner's mess.

That is awesome thanks. Yeah I would do the mods properly (tune) just don't know if dropping 25 on a cobra or 16/18 on a gt and then doing sct and s/c is more what I am into.

Thanks for the posts. It seems like i am more looking around 01+ now.

If that's the case, check out the 99 cobra vert on Kijiji......fairly low miles....i don't know the car, but it seems like a great deal. I'd question the 50Hp gained from a chip, but the rest seems good...

The 1999 and 2000's look terrible, the fake brake scoops and spoiler are absolutely awful.

I had a 2002 GT with a 5 speed, Tork Teck Supercharger (http://shop.torktech.com/) and exhaust.

It wasn't like 500hp or anything but it dyno'd out just over 390whp.

More then enough power for daily driver and lots of fun.

The 4.6L 2v motors are just fine as long as you keep the boost under 8psi.

See I was thinking something like this. Then drop 9-10 into a S/C, Tune, Brakes, Rims, etc. etc. etc.

Now thats super clean..

Put a Cobra bumper on it :D I LOVE the cobra bumpers!

Thats definetly a good platform to start with! you COULD look for a 2001 Bullitt.. Ive seen them go anywhere from 11-16k and theyve got a pretty good upgrade over the regular GT's

I found 1 Mach 1 on auto trader and it is 20,000.

I just like I could find one of these for 8-11 and then do it up. Does this have the better motor you were speaking of?

Stay away from the Mach1, more odd ball crap on them then there is on the GT's.

Price is good for that GT, but 80,000+ kms is kinda crappy.

Generally people that buy these cars tend to think of themselfs as the next John Force and they sharpen their mad skills at every light they can.

A lot of times for a used one the droppie toppie is a better way to go. lots of older people buy them because it is about the only cheap convertible you can get.

They definately aren't as good a track car as the coupe, but they are a lot less likely to have been beaten on.

2001 Bullitt has a 16V SOHC 4.6 engine.

twinbore throttle body, aluminum intake manifold, and high flow mufflers

Pretty sure their 265hp. Great cars and very easy power maker

I have been thinking of a convertable. Honestly I want it as a summer DD that has a nice soundtrack and can put my ass back into the seat. I dont see me doing anything but driving it around town and detailing the hell out of it.

Not worth it. Every single person I know personally who did a V6/V8 swap usually ended up incredibly unsatisfied (too much effort, too many headaches) and said they'd never do it again and just buy a V8 from the start.

^^ I found some v6 for about 3 g's less. I think for me it isnt cost effective or worth the headaches.

Not ruling it out though.

LOL none of those cars will cross the border under 20k, its a 1200 bux just at the border for tax, plus hotels, food, and all the little fees here and there. Then when you get it across have to put DRL's out of province inspection. trust me you will be over 20k even if you got it for 17k...oh ya have to fix the engine light problem first tho

Putting them all into the import a car calculator, most came out around/under the 20k mark
http://www.importcartocanada.info/tools/vehicle-import-price-calculator/
doesn't include food though when driving home or a hotel
but i'd ship it to the border likely

I have an 03 Cobra in Calgary. I have been thinking about selling.

Single 78mm turbo. Sonic Blue ragtop. Probably let it go for mid 30's. Has around 15,000miles on it. Has a few sets of wheels. Makes 630rwhp on pump gas. 800+ on C16.

Let me know if you have intrest.

Good luck with your search !!

^^^ Oh God I wish I was interested.

I am still wanting a project car but dont feel like financing it, and have had to use that cash for something else recently so probably will be on hold for a little while. I would say in the next year and a half though (as my insurance gets uber cheap on a project car as well :D )

Thanks for taking the time, sick sick car!
