Well, a co-worker stumbled across this place a couple months ago and has been ranting about it ever since. So I went with him today to try Sonny's Burgers off of Ogden road in the S.E.

It's an interesting place. It's an old building with kind of a shabby interior. It is run by some very nice Chinese folks, and they produce excellent burgers! I highly reccommend this place to anyone looking for an alternative to the same old fast food burger story everywhere else. You get very nice sized burgers - noticeably bigger than all the fast food joints - with fries and a can of pop for around $7 all in.

In short, its a small Mom and Pop place with no bells and whissles, smells Chinese but has great people and great food at a great price.

Food - 5/5
Price - 5/5
Service - 4/5
Cleanliness - 4/5
Esthetics - 2/5

Not sure of the actual address, but if you're going there from Glenmore, turn North on Ogden Road, follow down the hill, and it is a small red building on the West side of the road about 1.5kms North of Glenmore.

Go give it a try!

EDIT: Some more detail as requested...

I think I orderd the Sunny Special, or something along those lines. It was a double paddy with cheddar cheese and bacon. Again, it was delicious overall, far better than a fast food burger, but being touted as "having bacon" it should have MORE bacon. My coworker had the Texas Burger which, admittedly, looked better than mine. It had BBQ Sauce and a couple banana peppers. Definately will try that one next time.

There are tons of burgers to choose from as well as other dishes such as poutine and chicken fingers...etc.

I was put off a bit at first at the interior, not having eaten at many mom-an-pop shops, but it is clean, which is the most important thing. Not a huge selection of drinks - all canned, but you get your basic variety, I deviated from my normal Pepsi and enjoyed a cool Crush Cream Soda. I had one of the more expensive Burger Combo's being that it was a double paddy, fries and a drink and it came in right around $7-8 Tax included.

Have you had Bob's burgers? It's in the strip mall next to the glenmore inn? Also run by some asians, man best brugers in Calgary IMO.

Would be the south location, since Ogden & Highfield is at the north end of Ogden Road.

This one is just at the top of the hill North of the Legion.

I'll give that one near the Glenmore a try his week. Heck, for the same price - if not less - than a combo at some fast food place, I'd much rather have the better quality of a mom-and-pop shop, plus I can support the local business.

YOU MUST BE KIDDING!?!?!??!

we tried that place once because it looked "established," and we thought it might be good. we could bot have been more wrong. it was absolutely terrible, and we left without eating our food - which i NEVER do. The meat was HORRIFYING, to be honest i'm not even sure if it was beef... the veggies were terrible, and the fries were old and cold as well. it was over a year ago now so I don't remember the specifics, but i'm sure i posted online somehwere so i'm going to look for the review now.

:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

EDIT: note also that this place was originally opened by Bob, Peter's brother (of Peter's Drive Inn). it was long sold to some chineese folks, however (several times over, perhaps). and Peter's burgers suck anyhow.

i would strongly recommend against Bob's, but if you're really gonna go, I expect a full review posted in this section. Pictures would be nice, to drive home just how disgusting their food is.

sorry for the hijack, but Bob's is terrible enough that it warrants a good strong warning.

I guess I didn't post a review of Bob's Hamburgers, but go to http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/15/1442325/restaurant/Southeast/Bobs-Hamburgers-Calgary and you'll see what i mean.

FFWD review of Sunny's Hamburgers (This guy has a weekly burger review column, so he's a particularly useful critic):

http://www.ffwdweekly.com/article/life-style/food/burger-hunt-5362/

Sunny's Hamburger

7003 Ogden Road S.E.

Burger: Jumbo mushroom burger ($6.35 for a combo, including fries and a drink).

Two patties covered in a mushroom and onion sauce on a plain bun.

Sides: Krinkle-cut fries. Poutine is also available.

Atmosphere: A converted house in Ogden, the walls of the main floor are green and yellow and it’s furnished with mismatched chairs and square brown tables.

There are some tiny, framed art pieces on the walls, a giant photo of what I think is the Brooklyn Bridge and a dresser topped up with potted plants. It's not fancy, but it’s comfortable.

Menu: Breakfast, burgers, chicken fingers and teriyaki chicken or beef sums it all up.

Decision: Of all the mom-and-pop places I've been to, this might be my favourite. I can't give it a complete pass because the patties were preformed, but the balance of the offerings was good. I was terrified that the mushroom burger would be coated in Campbell's mushroom soup, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. The sauce had real mushrooms, grilled onions and a well-balanced flavour.

The burger was super sloppy and I ended up finishing most of it by fork (think Sloppy Joe sloppy). The fish burger and chicken fingers were both above average and cooked to a perfect crisp. But for under $7, including fries, a drink and taxes, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't order a burger at Sunny's.

Next Up: Bubba Louie’s Burger Bus, 3rd St. and 53rd Ave. S.E.

Please email burger suggestions to [email protected].

I was there last Saturday, so I'm pretty sure that's a yes.

** Don't park in the parking lot if your car is remotely low. Entries and exits are really steep. There's street parking on the other side of the building

Bob's used to be great, but if you haven't been there in awhile, you'll be sorely disappointed when you try it nowadays.

Here's a street view of the Sunny's the review is for:

OK, so we tried Sonny's for lunch today and were quite satisfied. the location is very strange, a mix of industrial and residential, and an all out ghetto for sure. There is a SWEET hobby shop just across the street, though, which has an awesome selection of rc airplanes. i recommend swinging in there after eating at Sunny's.

sexualbanana was absolutely right - that driveway is terrible. my car isn't even lowered and I scraped driving in. this is in a converted house, and it looks like the owners either live upstairs or use it as a rental unit.

we entered and were greeted by a very friendly chinese woman. I ordered a double Texas burger, fries, and a can of coke while my friend ordered a single Texas burger, fries and a coke. The total for all of this came to $13.

We had a seat and waited for our food to arrive. The decor is.... interesting, to say the least. Basically a bunch of mismatched tables and chairs with paint stains on them, etc. I don't have a problem with that, and it actually reminds me of a taqueria like you would find in the US, but don't expect anything fancy haha.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3253/s009d.th.jpg (http://img534.imageshack.us/i/s009d.jpg/)

There were some plant pots that were lined with broken egg shells. I don't know if that is a chinese thing, or these folks are just a bit off the wall, or what... but i would certainly never think of doing that haha.

Our food arrived about 2 or 3 minutes later. As noted in Darrel's FFWD column above, these are frozen pre-formed patties. They aren't the best burgers i've ever had, but I have to say that they are really good, especially considering the price. the food is very similar in quality to Burger Inn, but Sunny's seems to have more creative burgers, topping-wise. The burgers are also pretty big. i'm 6'1", 200 lbs. and eat like a motherfucker, but i could barely finish my double burger. I think i'll get the single next time. The Texas burger has BBQ sauce, banana peppers, pickles, and lettuce (i added cheese, too). it's very good. so yea, we'll definitely be going back to Sonny's in the future.

we also drove by Bob's Hamburgers on the way, and decided to stop and take a pic. it looks like they've recently upgraded the sign... actually, the old sign was the only thing going for this place, and it gave it an air of authenticity. i think they made a mistake in getting rid of it. :barf:

also noticed there is a Gondola Pizza in the same strip mall. my favorite pizza in the city, for sure:

+1 I would agree with nonlinear with his review. The only downside if you don't care about ambiance is the frozen patties.
