How long do you think it'll take for the US government to figure this out?

Pretty interesting haha. I highly doubt that it's feasible however; if it was, someone would have followed through with it.

That's very interesting but cannot be feasible for the quantity of oil spilt then the clean up required for hay, and not talking about implications on animals thousands of pounds of hay would do mixed in with the oil

1/4 lbs or hay per square foot of water?
would equal a thousands of tones of hay in a thousands of square miles or water.

then it's not as easy as using a strainer to get the wheat out or the gulf before it hits land dries out and turns into the largest recorded coastal fire.

America! Fuck Yeah!

The problem isn't separating the oil from the water. It does that all on it's own. The problem is the disbursement of the oil over such a vast surface area. Additionally, a lot of the oil is sitting below the immediate surface and wouldn't stick to the hay. Recently they have discovered that large oil plumes deep underwater also exist.

It's funny that the people who figured that out weren't some light heeled liberal tea-sippers. I enjoy that.

Stick with one of the original ideas, throw a bunch of baby seals into the oil, scoop them up, club them and burn them… remember the old Esso ads about a tiger in your tank, change that to a seal in your tank.

a lot of the farmers around where i live have said the same thing... hay has been used for a long time to do this... then you use the collected oily hay to burn for energy.

I like that the idea didn't also come from the team of 'experts' assigned to deal with the situation.

Would be awesome to see their idea used on a large scale, but I would just how much hay you would need. There wasn't very much oil in that bowl, and there's many many gallons in the ocean. Next crisis, no hay to feed farm animals?

I just did the calculations

would need approx:

15,806,468 tonnes of hay for 5000 sq/miles of dirty water

this isnt a solution anyways.
you'd have to continually dump hay into the ocean and take it out again. As well this does nothing to stop the actual flow of oil.

you are absolutely right

But isn't something better than nothing?

Not always. The scale of the disaster makes this solution extremely wasteful and impractical while not solving the main problem (the continuing flow of oil).

Trying to implement this solution would just be trying to make it look like something is being done, without accomplishing much. Then you're left with millions of pounds of oily hay that need to be disposed of on top of it.

On a much smaller scale it would be an effective plan, but not for this one.
