yeah...once you do over $50 there is no fine...the judge sets the fine and you actually have to go and talk to him! I don't know why you are so relaxed about this, coz you are gonna get raped up the ass big time, especially by the insurance company! 60km over is very reckless needless to say. Better think up a really good excuse man!

bart

no, close to it, and being arrested. i had to chance to see what it was like in the back of a cop car anyway. he let me go though for the day, but if i got another ticket that day, jail time.

i wasn't saying a word. but he was pissed when he stopped me. my radar went off, i knew i should have slowed down when going over that hill, then i slammed on my brakes, but it was too late. what kind of cop gets people for speeding at 7am in the morning????

as for my excuses, here are a couple:

1) its a diesel! there was no way i was going that fast.
2) i'm capable of driving my car at high speed safely, my driving record speaks for itself, no accidents, aswell as my lap times at solo2, which i was speeding to that fine morning on my way to edmonton. you must not confuse me with 90% of other canadians which get their driver's license out of a cereal box, probably just like you judge...!

ya it went off, but it was too late. and when it did, off the scale, i swear my heart stopping beating for a few seconds, lol, especially when i looked at the speedo. i was going over a hill. all the other ones i slowed down, but was i cooking, wanted to hit mach..."2" in my little deez. and like i said, 7 in the morning, so not much traffic, and having an instant on, he had nobody to ping ahead of me, therefore i had no advance notice. he was driving in the other direction. took him a few km to catch up. once he did, he rode my ass until i came to a complete stop, almost felt like slamming on my brakes again and make him hit me.

You're right, it would take some balls to do it. And if they radioed ahead you might've got an even bigger ticket!

And trying a stunt like that on the highway might've put you on one of those "COPS" shows. All they would have to do is fire up their chopper and then it would be all over.

I did it in the city once - But the only reason why I tried is because I saw the cop take his sweet time crossing the median to come after me. I gunned it around a few corners, parked between some cars in an apartment parking lot, and ducked. My heart almost stopped when he came driving by...

if you exceed the limit by no more than 20 in calgary, simply goto prosecutor, and automatic photo radar, tell him to switch it. he told me himself this is what they do when you're under 20 over, dont use points for small stuff like this.

I wouldnt try to deny that you were going that fast (unless you really werent)

I would try to stress that I was not maintaining that speed. I would think of some excuse for punching it up breifly - maybe some dick was tailing you and you wanted to put some distance between you, or you wanted to clear some traffic to get back into the slow lane and resume your 110 on cruise control.

Again, I wouldnt admit to doing an exact speed, but I would tell the judge "yeah, I had it over the limit for a bit, but this is the reason...."

if you read the ticket bart posted read what it says..."warning: a warrant may be issued for the arrest of any person who fails to appear in court or pay the VOLUNTARY PAYMENT by the date required"

so you have to pay them on the date or theyre can be a warrant out for you. But what they usually do, is just hve it in the system, and if you ever go threw a checkstop, or get pulled over and they run ur dl etc...you will be served with a fat sapoena(sp), or they may take you to jail.

You walked away with an awesome deal. No suspension, no insurance increases, no jail time. I was starting to get scared to speed but thanks to the insurance rate freeze...

Did you go to Mr. Speedometer and get them to test your speedometer? I did that in my car. This is only a theory, but if you changed the size of your stock rims/tires you could change screw your speedometer reading?

Its pretty funny that you can prove to them that your speedometer is off by 3% but get let off for speeding 70% over the posted limit! Props to you. Did you talk to the judge yourself or did you have representation?

187 in a 100 zone (excessive speeding)

$853 3 month license suspension etc etc...

I've only had two tickets thus far.....

$402 Careless driving 6 demerit charge for "spirited driving," apparently the officer couldn't clock my friend and I as we were exceeding the speedlimit by more than 2x (he guestimated but I'm glad he didn't clock, I know how fast I was going...)! This ticket I went to whine to a prosecutor about and we settled on "speeding 30km/h+" and like $177 3 demerit fine, which I forgot to pay and it got jacked up to $220.

Then the second one, about a month later I got as I was late for work and went to pass someone... just started to go to around the person saw the cop and hit th ebrakes, apparently not fast enough... but he heard the turbo spool up and the bov let out.... :( He got me w/ the laser at 86 in a 60 and was pissed that I almost ran him over when he stepped out in front of me..... I told him my speedo was off as it's an older car and I didn't think I was going that fast + the car is an american car and I wasn't used to the MPH on teh guages yet..... He wrote it down to 10km/h over and 2 demerits (I just paid that one and didn't fight it b/c he wrote the situation on the ticket).

The only two tickets I've had... but I've been pulled over about 4 times for 30km/h + speeding, numerous times for tint, exhaust, colour lights and various other traffic offences and have talked my way out of them.....

Best was I got pulled over in Sherwood park, AB and the cop though I was suspicious and I could tell he wanted to search the car, so I offered to show him everything inthe car.... hand on their guns they let me do that, but after 45 minutes of me talking rapidly about everything, and i mean everything in the car they told me to get the hell outta there and got back in their car w/ no tickets issued.... hahahahahahahaha sometimes talking too much can be a good thing!

It just came to mind, but when we came down for ISO last summer we got tagged about 170+ on the last leg before the highway turns into Deerfoot...... the cop came across the grass after me, a black is300, and a yellow fiero... My friend w/ his lude radiod us on the FRS and told us that the cop had to stop and help animal control keep some cattle from going on the highway and we were home free..... I was so lucky that time, we all were.... Two weeks after going into Gasoline alley they had speed trap set up right at the entrance, and realizing this as I passed the "undercover" radar sporting truck in "pit lane" and saw the boys in blue pulling over the cars in front of us, I made a split second decision and bolted through Wendy's parking lot and out on the back road, also getting me off another ticket (didn't stay in RD for lunch that time...)

Guess I should consider myself lucky then! :D I should also slow it down a notch.... this'll catch up w/ me sooner or l8tr. I've never been tagged going through Ponoka or on the highway except for on our way to ISO. I don't even own a radar detector... so luck

richardchan: ya, mr. speedo test done. i guess if you change the tires sizes it will throw it off. i had a lawyer, for a few reasons. 1) i dont know anyone in ponoka, or what they're like, 2) too far to drive, even further of a walk home, 3) the walking home part :)

itsnotadub: you gotta get some Upsolute love. ahah. but thats true, it takes alot of effort to break 200, possibly wind in your favor. having steelies instead of my 26 pound rims makes a difference too, less rolling resistance. i know how fast mine can go, dont care to share on here. too much attention as it is, lol. my blizzaks are rated to 160, are they ever underrated. i mean EVER. ahaha.

bol: thats what i thought too, but a friend told me he's 100% sure no matter what you do, insurance can't go up. he's on the ball when it comes to stuff like that. besides, mine was just renewed last month, so i'm good for another year anyway. i might take that defensive driving course or whatever it is, i think that knocks 2 off or something.

Balls is outrunning a cop on the highway at 3pm, in traffic, in the emergency lane, and getting away with it (in style in an NSX) :). I know someone that did that haha.

My record ticket was about 7 years ago in Abbotsford BC. I got clocked at 220km/h in 100 zone. I was decelerating too when I got clocked lol. The cop wrote the ticket at 200km/h, $600.

rage2:

ya, i did, like i said in another post. but that was "low" speed, lol. if that was the majority of the pop. driving in my situation, there would be more than a cracked license plate frame from that. and you know me, thats going all out. perhaps i should have wiped that mud off my tires the lap earlier. the best part, i got re-teched, and kept racing! no guts no glory.

besides, you gotta admit, 110 on the highway between calgary and edmonton is rediculous. most countries in europe their autobahn's, autostrada's, whatever you call it, is 130. germany is fun, no limit there.

rage2
12-12-2003, 11:30 PM
Yes I agree the speed limits are ridiculously low. I used to drive to edmonton every weekend when my wife was at U of A, always leave Calgary at 2am, no cops. If I had to drive speed limit during the day, I'd fall asleep and die.

I personally think it's dangerous to drive alone at 110km/h. It's soooo frickin' boring, just asking for trouble. I cruised at 155km/h, no pink ticket in case I got busted ya know... At 155, you're a LOT more alert than driving at 110km/h.

But then again, there are a lot of shitty drivers out there... lots of highway accidents. At 110km/h, you're gonna get killed in an accident. 155km/h is not going to make a difference with a careless driver. What needs to be done first is PROPER driver education. Boot all the shitty drivers off the road. I swear, 90% of the drivers in Calgary would not be able to get their license in europe with their skills.

bart
12-12-2003, 11:49 PM
yep, all true. you can notice 110 is slow when you're going really fast, slow back down to the limit, then it seems like a playground zone, omg. not that those are bad ideas, i NEVER speed through those, or school zones. i get outta of my to prevent people from passing me, or anything in those, its kids we're talking about.

the main reason europeans are good drivers is because it costs close to $1000 to from start to finish by the time you get your drivers license, here what was it for me, $20 exam and $50 for the card. funny. so there they have a reason to try and actually learn it. also, there is almost no such thing as "one-way" over there, roads are small, driving fast, its impossible to not think about what you're doing. finally, 98% of cars there are stick.

so take the three reasons in the above paragraph, and you have, like rage2 said, 90% of calgarians/canadians/americans failing a road test in europe.

ryder_23
12-13-2003, 12:42 AM

you guys are exactly right. In europe, the drivers know that they have to make a decision and do it quickly, calgary drivers are like, should i go, no, yes maybe, nah i'll wait, then they do some last second manuever that ends up causing an accident whereas 5 seconds before they woulda been fine. Thats just one example i see on a daily basis.

Primer_Drift

Honestly, we reeeally bitch and whine about our speed limits and traffic offences in Alberta. Personally, I would not be able to drive in the UK. Big brother watches every single move, every highway. If you are doing 140 in a 90 on a highway, and pass an unmanned camera, your license plate # is posted on an electric billboard down the highway with your speed and fine. License suspension is so common there that the same day you are ticketed you are due in court. IMO it could be much much worse..

So True, a co-worker of my Dads whos from Belgium was in town this past summer and he couldnt beleive how many moron drivers we had here. and he brought up all 3 points you made that are probably some of the key reasons why drivers are better in europe, he was a VERY cocky bastard too, thought he was king shit behind the wheel.

I got pulled over at over 180 km/hr in a 100 zone... No ticket, the cop wanted to talk to me about something else..:)....That cop also said if I kept it below 160 on that highway where they got me, they would probably never bother me, as they knew who I was and what I did for fun...160 though is the magic number, once you break that, its court appearance...
There are a couple of highways its just not worth speeding on in order:
1:#2 north and south between Edmonton and Calgary as proven in this thread
2: #1 between here and Canmore, then Banff and Lake louise.
3: #1 about 25 km's either side of Strathmore, those cops have nothing better to do, they could be out following the fumes looking for grow operations, but they really are to freakin lazy for that..
4: #3 between Fort Macleod and Lundbreck, I don't know if its the high amount of natives on that road from Brocket or what, but every second car you pass is a RCMP with active Radar..
5: The secondary Highways within 40 km radius of Vulcan, they have a whole whack of special constables and RC's there with nothing to do but drive the roads..
Once well past strathmore though on #1, its clear sailing early in the morning, On my to Winnipeg a couple of times, I went through Brooks, all the way well into Saskatchewan without seeing one cop, 3-4 hours straight at 200 km/hr plus....

I've only been to winnepeg once, but it seemed like every small town in saskatchewan was crawling with RCMP. The way saskatchewan fines are structured, they like to sit outside of towns where the speed limit drops down from highway speed because the fines are the difference between your speed and the limit squared (this gets REALLY expensive in a hurry).

if you have a good radar, and drive when there is a good amount of traffic on the road, you'll never get caught. this was the first time i drove so early in the morning, thats why.

also, i personally havent seen planes flying over the highway. but you know those thick yellow lines going across highways every like 200-300m, those are for planes. too bad i dont have a sunroof, lol, otherwise when i notice those lines, i always look up.

basically they count the time it takes for you to travel between those lines, and figure out your speed. they dont use radar, or the speedo in their plane, otherwise there would be some other legit reasons those lines would be painted on in the first place.

4wheeldrift: are you sure??? thanks for the notice. they should offer airmiles with that.

I don't think they use those lines anymore. I believe there were numerous successful legal challenges to the timing method with a frickin' stopwatch. Very very prone to human error. Could easily be off by 20km/h.

I tried to fight it in court before but I lost, because the prosecutor asked if I was a math expert (I calculated human reaction vs speed differences). I told him I was in grade 10 but in advanced math classes (grade 12 math), but that's not a math expert so all my calculations were thrown out. I asked the cop if he had certification for operating a stop watch, and to my surprise, he busted out a frickin' certificate proving he went to a stop watch training course .

Man I used to have a lot of free time lol. That was my wannabe lawyer for a day moment hehe.

ahahah. like wtf??? i wonder if someone has a racing license, can they get away with it then.

"oh, you know how to time people with your timex certificate, i know how to drive fast, look, here is mine..."

probably not. government will screw you over anyway.

Keep in mind its pretty rare to actually see police outside of towns in most of rural saskatchewan, generally as long as you slow down when entering a town you're ok. A guy I work with makes regular runs driving across the prairies into northern manitoba, so he's quite familiar with how they do things there.

i had a ticket in the summer for going 65km/h over the speed limit in banff national park. so that was a automatic court date. as it turned out, the crown reduced it, and the ticket only costed me $350 instead of my license.

ive only gotten two out of two years on the road, one was for a headlight that was out(wtf? cop haveing a bad day i guess) and the other was for speeding, i dont remember the speeds, but this was about $200 USD, or about $243 CAD
i also got lucky once, about 20 MPH over the limit, but me and the officer were good freinds with the same people, i think that would have been somethin like a $250 ticket, definitly got lucky with that one

My worst ticket was on elbow drive by the photo radar van. 84 in a 40 zone. Ouch that hurt. $300 but went and talked to the Justice and he dropped it to 22 over and the ticket dropped to $136. I think that he felt sorry for me being broke and in school.

But then again, there are a lot of shitty drivers out there... lots of highway accidents. At 110km/h, you're gonna get killed in an accident. 155km/h is not going to make a difference with a careless driver. Or if you have a shitty car. Before I overhauled the suspension, my car felt dangerous going faster than 130km/h.

I have a few of many to share.

With the Jetta Diesel being a stupid ass in a residential area.
7 years ago, 6:30 a.m. on a sunday, 185 on elbow drive at heritage:banghead: Took untill canyon medows for the fuzz to catch up to me. And damn was he pissed.:dunno: Mandatory court, 680 bux in fines, 6 points.
Lucky I still had my licence

With the bike
2 years ago, 7:30 p.m. on #2 south of the city. 278 kmh on radar , road block fore me before okatoks.
Pulled over, punched on the helmet by the cop, hurt him alot more then me.:D
He then procceded to ask me who my father was and went back to his car.
Eventually, after an hour in the car, he told me he would send me the ticket in the mail, and sent me on my way. I never recieved the ticket or anything.
I thank my Dad being a minister for getting me off on this one.

The 3rd pic of LegendBoy's tickets looks all to familier.

Boy Officer Cloutier really got around! My bf has a ticket from him too, only 83 in a 60 zone though. Seems pretty tame compared to some on here. When did he quit the force? This was a while back and he just paid his ticket and let it go at that.

Yup they used to all the time way back when......using 2 sets wide white lines across on the highway and timing you between them from the airplane.

I use to do that drive from Cowtown to Edmonchuk all the time in my 1995 Saab 900 V6 that cruised at 200 kmh without missing a beat. I miss that car. :( Well except for the godawful reliability!!!!

Damn, that fucker got around!! haha You're right! Anyway, I got my tickets (sorry sorry, Corey and I got our tickets! ) back in Aug 2003. He was driving his undercover durango and this was right beside Toma's dyno shop. To make things short, we got our tickets, I postponed my court date for about a year and when I had finally made the last points of my case and set the date for trial (about June 2004), I went in and the crown prosecutor informed me that Good Ol' Officer Cloutier had resigned from the Calgary Police Force and went to the RCMP! Therefore all his outstanding tickets were quashed and forgotten! Gotta love the way the system works and you gotta love saving 700 dollars in fines!:rofl:

Just for the record, the two tickets were 1: Stunting and 2: Failure to produce insurance. hehe
