ok so i know synthetic oil last longer then regular oil
i was told 10k
i was told an oil filter only lasts 5k

last year i did it once and im wondering if after 5k on synthetic oil i just change the filter and top up the oil like a litter or so
then do a full oil change after 10k
it will be all good??

any experienced guys what do u think?

I think you should just change the oil and filter at 5k

Wait... how did you remove the filter without all the oil coming out.
Or do you mean you catch it in a container then pour it back in?

Either way, just change the oil at 5k. If your really doing the catch and re pour in method, then you might as well just pour in fresh oil.

Some cars come with cartrige style vs. canister style that you're thinking of....

Correct me if im wrong but the filter is higher than the engine
sump so why would all the oil pour out when the filter is removed?

The filter will hold upwards of 1 litre, some of the diesel trucks can hold more. I think that's what the OP means when he changes the filter at the 5k point(when he just replaces the filter) that he tops up according to the amount of oil the filter holds.

I change my oil every 6k because there are two things (basically) that affect oil life.

1.) Additives
2.) Contaminents

In the case of synthetics, you are correct about additives lasting longer than Dino oil. However the particles that are found in air/fuel that the oil filters out (and thus turning it a dark colour) still exist in the system. I have a huge oil pan and thus lots of oil to capture and contain those particles. I can do longer OCI's than people with similar trucks and am considering pushing my OCI to 8k. I would look at how much oil your car uses, maybe even do a drip test after 5k next time and see how many contaminents you engine is depositing into the oil. If it is low then I would consider going to 10k.

Personally 10k is fine, just run good oil. I need to find some Pennzoil Ultra and I will run 10k OCI. Check out the bobtheoilguy forums if you want to know what oil is good and what isnt.

I do 10000 kms in my truck. If my gf's turbo can handle it, my truck can too.

I run about 1000km/l of oil capacity. I wouldn't run longer than that without having UOAs done

You should be fine with a synthetic oil and good filter for 10k.

If your really worried have a oil test done on a samle of the oil and that will tell you.

I've used Mobil 10-30 synthetic in my 2003 Matrix and change every 10km, but sometimes even longer if I'm busier and can't get around to it. Engine has 375k on it, great compression and doesn't burn a drop between changes.

+1. Unless you're into a turbo or are getting a lot of blow-by, 10,000 should be the minimum you run on any synthetic. Otherwise don't waste your money on it.

I have a sensor on my Civic that tells me how much life is left in my existing oil. I seem to be changing it every 10-11k.

Iirc there isn't a sensor it is just an algorithm that looks at idle time, throttle, past o2 sensor readings and calculates roughly the life left. Gm's do the same thing.

With AmsOil, you could get away with 8-10k oil changes, but I dont risk it. WIth my bike I use AmsOil as well, and change it at 3k km's:dunno:

Please tell me you don't mean 80 000 - 100 000km?

FYI: 8K = 8000 and 10K = 10,000

Any reasoning behind this? Seems like insane overkill even for the guys on bitog forums.

^ I dont ever plan on selling my 675, so I may as well take very good care of it, since I plan on taking it well past 100k (1/4 there already LOL)
Lots of people change their oil at 3k, some racers change it every race weekend. That to me is stupid though, thats like every 100kms. :nut:
You're right, perhaps 3k with AmsOil is a bit much. Any other oil I'd do it with, but I may slow it down to 4 & 5k oil changes this summer.

No, I had one zero too many there.

^^ I do 4 for my oil and 8 for the filter and it looks great when it comes out. To be honest I don't ride that much though.

I was just curious if you had anything specific that I could learn from. The cheap protective qualities is def a good one.

Just checking. I've seen some nutty stuff from the Amsoil buffs, including one customer who insisted on 35 000 (iirc) km OCIs in his X5. One pretty ugly engine failure and $8000 bill later, he finally decided to take our word over Amsoil's.

35,000 kms? Thats even worse then that (local)Amway Dumbass Andrew Yip, he forgot that engines require oil changes... at all SO 30k later his engine finally died. (It was a brand new car) :banghead: Ill never forget that phone call I got one Saturday afternoon.

"Graham, my car died on Deerfoot, it just sputtered and lost power, now its leaking oil from somewhere"
" Oh shit...... what did you do?"
" Nothing but the oil is really black and lumpy, I see metal deposits in it"
"When was the last time you had an oil change? "
" at 30,000 kms"
" and what are you at now?
"Almost at 60,000.... Oh My God Graham, is this bad?"
" Yeah dude... you just ruined your engine, that'll cost you $3k for a new one installed"
" Are you fucking serious OMG OMG!!"
"yeah man... what the fuck were you thinking?"

A filter is $10-15, why not change both? I haven't heard anything bad happen from others doing what you do though.
:dunno:
I used to use Motul, and its GREAT stuff, but when I switched to AmsOil, my bike ran noticeably cooler. That and all the countless tests really sold me on it. I use it in everything now. I just love the stuff as everything now runs like a top.

^^ I have read conflicting reports about how a new filter reacts in a system (too high a flow rate to fliter in some cases) and I use top tier fuel and inspect my air filter so have a pretty good idea how much I am taxing my oil for contaminants.... At least I think I do.

I used to use motul but I think that it is the mobil 1 of the bike world. I have been using rotella for a few OCI's and I love it. Only thing is I have a bit of 15W40 to kill before I can purchase the new t6 0w40 and the weight worries me a bit.
