Why not just spend a bit extra and get a 2002 to be on the safe side? :dunno:

The 01's are generally avoided for the transmission issues, however there is a company that makes a rebuild kit that resolves the tranny issue.

The other issue is the One Way Starter clutch. The problem wasn't limited to 01's, my 02 had the same issue. When the one way starts going bad, the starter won't engage properly and you won't be able to start it. LA Designs makes a replacement One Way that resolves this.

Unless the 2001 is really cheap, I would probably pass.

Seems like an ok price. I paid $3700 for a brand new 2008 Raptor 250 earlier this year from Bow Cycle.

Owned one a long while ago...never had any issues mechanically, but I would not buy one if your are looking at track riding, I found it to heavy, and not so graceful. I bought a TRX 450R and never looked back.

Either way, if its just for fun, trail riding etc.. there a good choice, I don't know anyone that has had major issues with them, but I only knew a handful of guys with raptors so take it for what its worth.

$2500 seems like a pretty decent price for a 2001, so long as it's not completey beat on. I think in the <3000$ range any Raptor is probably going to need some work, and as long as you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you should be ok.

That aside, Local ATV parts can be suprisingly expensive. I recently had to replace the A-arm bushings on my raptor, and Blackfoot motorsports wanted $240 for the bushing kit. Went online and got the same kit shipped to my house for $25...

Yep, Raptor is Great for trail riding out in the foothills, lots of torque and you don't have wind it out.
