Hey, my dad is looking for a new car since his current car is almost 20 years old now and he figures he needs something better haha. So far we've been looking at the E60 M5, E63 AMG, S63 AMG, CLS63 AMG and Maserati Quattroporte. What cars would you reccomend, he's probably going to get something used from the States and I think his budget is around ~80k. Any AWD options?

There's lot's of 08 E60 M5's around 50k, even modded ones, any things to look out for and common problems? Heard the SMG pump is a problem for the SMG cars.

Brand new CTSV, even with dealer markup and shitty Canada price, is still probably under his budget. And it comes with a REAL manual tranny, if he's into that.

Yea, told him about it, I don't think he wants something like that. Wants something from the German companies or nicer since it's his "retirement" car.

Told him about the M3 sedan, C63 AMG and IS-F and I think he said they were too small.

since when is an is-f small? you can fit pep il in it right?

Since it's pretty much the same size as the C63, IS-F, RS4, etc. It's a freaking IS classed Lexus, it's a pretty compact vehicle... Especially when it's being compared to cars like the S class...

All of those cars have quite a bit of room in them just like an accord would

What was he driving before? I'd hardly consider those cars small, except in your s-class comparison. Civics are the size of my old E-Class now, a new C is bigger.

He's not going to be able to import a Benz unless anything has changed recently, and importing BMW's can still be pricey.

the e60 m5 isnt really that nice, its pretty fast, but it doesn't shift 'retirement' smooth. It is also a pig on gas.

My suggestion, albeit a difficult one to find would be an alpina b7.

http://www.autotrader.ca/used_cars_Car_details/Richmond_British%2bColumbia_2007_BMW_ALPINA%2bB7_1769188.html?srcID=5&frnID=7927446&cofid=BS20063795314&prv=British+Columbia&r=9

there are 5 on canada trader nation wide right now. a 0-100 in a claimed 4.4 (couple tenths slower than m5) with 500 hp and 500+ tourque they really fly.

Also with cutting edge options like adaptive cruise and nightvision, it doesnt feel llike a 3 year old car.

Im not sure if youve seen one around, but pictures of the wheels dont do them justice

right in your price range

Oh, the B7 .

He's driving a 92 Toyota Previa  and occasionally my mom's Jaguar x-type. He hasn't got anything nice cause he works in Fort Mac and has to park his car at the airport every week.

Jag XFR!

RS4 and S6 fit the bill for AWD.

Too bad we don't get the RS6 :(

Yeah the SMG is much like Communism & the rotary engine. GREAT idea in theory, not so much in tangible form. I had SMG in my Z4, and *when* it worked great, it was a dream, but all it took was one little thing to go wrong and the whole tranny would go ape-shit. :nut:
Go with either a full auto or straight manual.
I'd take a look at cars out east in Ontario, you can save $10k there easily. Big bonus on a car that may not ever be winter driven as some people dont drive these high end cars in their brutal winters. For my friend I found a '04 BMW 745I for $15k cheaper over there then here. :dunno:

^^Cubic Feet.

If the RS6 was here, I'd tell him to get it in a heartbeat. Sleeper wagon and he can move stuff with it. I heard you can bring the C6s, there's a company that does it but it's something like $140k :S

I guess we can ditch the M5 than, I don't think he really wants a manual.

Forgot about the XFR. How's the S6 compared to the AMG's and M cars?

I honestly think the Alpina B7 is a perfect daily driver, it's so planted and so quick. Either that or a 2010 BMW 550i, but the all new F10 2011 5 series is going to be a lot better and it looks more refreshed. If I was spending 80k I'd wait for that.
The E60 M5 is unreliable and its a pig on gas and repairs. Forget it.
The C63 AMG is great for an auto tranny and its less harsh than the IS-F and drives awesome, but if you think its too small get the Alpina! They are cheap from the US to import!
The new Jaguars are unreliable and resale is weak on them, they have awesome interiors though and their exterior looks very sharp. Still wouldn't buy one.
Audi's S6 looks like everything else Audi makes, didn't blow me away when I drove it, so I'd pass, but that's my thoughts.

Are you on crack? Just because they all have 4 doors doesn't make them the same size. Go to a lexus dealer, and try to sit in the back seat of an IS-F. Then go sit in an accord.

There was as much (or more) room in the back seat of my '91 accord than there is in the back of an IS.

Oh yeah, and the size comparison to the aveo can not be chocked up to headroom  it just means the IS is a small car.

The current Civic has the same interior volume as the C-Class.

I have checked. The C-class is pretty small.

My dad thinks my LGT is a tad small, even in the backseats. And it's 3 inches longer than the IS-F and 6 inches longer than the C, 3 series and A4.

Would the Alpina be suitable for winter though? That's one of his concerns, I told him he wouldn't even drive it in the winter anyways, but he said he might.

Good winter tires go a long way in the winter is all I have to say.

450 lb-ft of torque and winter tires work fine for me.

Yea, winter tires should be fine haha. Do you just take the Alpina's to the BMW dealerships to service? Found some pretty good deals in the states for like 60k.

oh definitely, its nice and rear heavy, quality winter tires and cautious driving and he'll be fine. It's an unreal sedan man, B7 ftw

S6 or a E63. The S6 will eat winter for breakfast and is a nice size as well. Lots of room for 5 and some golf clubs.

Those would be my top 2 as well if I were in the same situation.

Again, its a shame we don't get the RS6.

Yea, the RS6 would be my first pick. Gallardo V10

What about the S8? Any thoughts on the Maserati Quattroporte?

Quattroporte is unreliable. Ferrari unreliability and design, very expensive to maintain.

Is this from personal experience? I've read a fair bit on it and most of the complaints are just that the SMG clutches are pretty expensive and don't last very long, but then that's the same for an M3/M5. What are the common problems?

The S6 already had the Gallardo V10 (tuned down slightly), the RS6 adds 2 turbos to that :) .
