Website helps women date rich men

EDMONTON - A 22-year-old Edmonton woman has snagged designer purses, perfume, fancy dinners - and soon college tuition - by dating millionaire men she met online.

"I'm well taken care of," said Brooke, on Wednesday, an alias she uses to meet wealthy suitors on seekingarrangement.com.

The website is catered for young women, known as sugar babies, to meet rich sugar daddies for "mutually beneficial relationships."

Brooke said she doesn't want her real name used because her friends and family don't know about her dating agenda.

Over the last month, the call centre worker said she has been given more than $3,000 from three benefactors to pay for her car payment, insurance and shopping expenses.

"I'm not a gold-digger. I just have standards. I don't date guys that don't have money," said Brooke.


Last month, a 55-year-old divorced father of two who claimed to be worth $2 million, flew from Calgary to visit for the weekend.

The medical company CEO spoiled her with a $5,000 shopping spree at Holt Renfrew, buying designer purses, perfume, clothes, makeup and shoes.

Dinner was at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Madison's Grill.

He boasted about taking her on trips around the world - Las Vegas, Bahamas and Thailand.

There was no expectation for sex, she said. "It's really not about sex. They can get an escort for sex. They actually want to spend time with that person."

On a similar website, sugardaddy.com, Brooke said she met a Middle Eastern man - she suspects is married. The 42-year-old offered to buy her a condo in the west end, pay her tuition and a $5,000 monthly allowance.

"It's better than getting a student loan," she said.

Founder and CEO of seekingarrangement.com Brandon Wade said the site allows both parties to spell out what they want in the relationship.

"The women are flaunting their looks and characters, and the men flaunt their success and wealth," he said, during a phone interview from Las Vegas.

In Edmonton, there are 2,678 sugar babies and 893 sugar daddies registered on the website.

"If somebody is saying you can come for dinner and take you shopping, I don't understand why people think that's bad. Why not do it?" said Brooke.
