I've been working on these two butcher blocks off and on for the past 6 weeks or so. I'm extremely happy with how both of them turned out. The tile looking one is made of birch (tiles) with mahogany (grout). The stand is also birch with mahogany inlays on the legs. It measures about 21"x33"x36" tall and weighs in at about 150 lbs or so. The top is just over 3" thick.

The second butcher block stand is birch, wrapped with mahogany, which is then wrapped with 1/8" thick cherry. The top on it is about 2 1/8" thick, measures about 20"x30"x36" tall. The stand is made entirely of birch and weighs about 100lbs or so.

Both bases are finished with my own special blend finish of Mineral Spirits, Polyurethane, Boiled Linseed Oil and Tung Oil. I applied 5 coats to each base and had to wait about 24 hours in between for each coat to dry along with a light sand before the next coat. The tops both received 3 coats of mineral oil, followed by 2 coats of a beeswax/oil finish.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on these and plan to make a couple more in the near future.

Man, that is awesome! I am currently rounding up tools and equipment myself in the hopes of developing some woodworking skills. I loved doing it in high school but cars took over. Now I am almost 40, I am sick of actually working on cars for a hobby and want to get back into the wood. Hopefully I will eventually be able to make some cool stuff at this level!

I find it to be an extremely rewarding hobby. All started a number of years ago because we couldn't find a coffee table we liked....

Still a hobby and still learning as I go...

So how long does it take for you to make a table like that? You're really a master at your craft

Thank you.

These two took about 6 weeks in total, but that obviously wasn't working on them 8 hrs/day.

I think the finishing alone took me close to a week though.

6 coats of finish on the legs and more on the top...

Looks really well done, you ought to team up with the poker table making guy and go into business. Sell to the underpaid oil barons in this fair city.

You are turning into Calgary's own Sam Maloof:

I've actually made a number of poker tables myself... Very similar to what Dave makes...

I think I have quite a ways to go to be on par with one of the greatest woodworkers ever, but I'll definitely take it as a compliment. Sam Maloof is most famous for his rocking chairs... I've already got plans to make one sometime in the future.

I call them a butcher block stand... essentially it is a very high end cutting board that is the choice of professional chefs. The way it is constructed allows for very unique designs and is much easier on knives (which is something alot of pros worry about when spending 1000s on a set)

Are you looking to sell that brick wall looking one? I'm blown away, that's really nice.

Hmmmmm, I'm confused as to how these work. Are these waist height tall?

Yea, they are like having a cutting board/table built into one. Completely badass though.

Those are fuckin' amazing, the hours and thoughts required. I love working on wood from time to time.

Not to be racist, I hope you're not making it for Chinese restaurants, it'd just get mangled to shits within months... chopping chicken heads, squids, etc...

Over 120 individual pieces...

The glue only has an open time of about 15-20 minutes, so it was extremely stressful trying to get everything glued up while racing the clock.

I even had a helper and just barely managed...
