Here is an interesting (but short) article regarding Xenon headlights and how retrofit kits compare to OEM xenon kits. The kit used in the comparison is the Phillips 4000k kit.

good article. i guess you can't expect oem quality out of a retro fit kits. it would be intresting if we could line up some vehicle's with xenon retro fit and oem and see how they compare.

The biggest thing is just the housing design. A car that comes from the factory like a MB has the reflectors designed to take advantage of HIDs right from the get go, where with a retrofit kit you are generally stuck with whatever kind of reflector you had before. This can lead to all kinds of pattern and spread issues.
