Where do you guys get your tune ups done? Just bought a bike and it needs one. I was going to drop it off at Sport Mart and they charge $40 for a basic tune up. Would I be ok, or is that like taking your car to crappy tire?

They'll be fully able to clean and lube the chain. They probably do little else.
A dedicated bike shop might not be much more expensive, and those guys and gals really know their stuff.
I recommend Bow Cycle and Pure as two good shops, but there are others.

The guy said they adjust the brakes and deraileurs. Check the bike, and true the wheels.

If you can spare an hour, do it yourself. Even if you don't know what you're doing, there are tons of tutorials online. The Park tool website is great for breaking everything down.

At least take it to a place that knows what they are doing, I would do it myself before taking it to Sport Mart or Canadian Tire.

If you're in the South I recommend Pedal Head.

If youre a serious rider, go to a serious place.

Once in a while, sport martk might be just fine.

MEC also does bikes too.

Agreed on Bowcycle and Eurotech, great places. I've got my bike done at mec before, no complaints.

Any one ever upgrade their front suspension? I'm thinking about going from rigid to hardtail but was wondering if the front suspension adds a lot of weight.

I know that Pure cycle has their big sale this weekend. Around midnight they have half price tuneups.

The front suspention does add weight but if you get an adequate fork you should be happy

I wouldn't add suspension to a bike unless I really liked it other than the fork. You can buy some pretty light forks though, depending on what you want to spend. FOX pretty much owns the market right now.

What is normally included in a tune up (basic vs. full)? My bike needs all the cables adjusted, brakes and derailleurs adjusted and the rims trued. Are those normal things that are done in tune ups?

'Bronze Tune-up' is probably what you're looking for.

At the shop I go to, this is roughly how it works:

Basic would include: Adjustments and lube, make sure everyone is operating as it should. I would think they would true the wheels too. The shop will let you know if anything needs to be replaced, like cables, chain, tire, etc.

Full: Tear down/disassembly of the bike, everything lubed, brake bleed/flush, everything inspected, re-tightened, and adjusted properly. Should be just like new.

Just ask the shop you're taking it too if your not sure.
