Here it is... Another year of hockey coming up. The good news it that the Flames can't do much worse then last year.

But Halak to St. Louis? I wonder who Montreal got....

Lars Eller and Ian Schultz going the other way for Halak. Schultz is from Calgary and played for the Hitmen.

Lars Eller - C
1st round - 13th overall (2007)

Ian Schultz - RW

I dont understand any logic behind that deal, price wanted out of MTL did he not...
I know nothing on the first rounder, schultz is a gifted tough guy but will be a 4th line player (if he even plays this year.
MTL is treating it like a rebuild when i thought they had what they needed.

It has everything to do with cutting costs. Halak will most likely go to arbitration and get a big raise while obviously Price will not. This allows Montreal to have a better chance at signing Plekanec and maybe Biron as a backup. I'm not a fan of the move but I can see the logic behind this.

hi fanboy, Halak deserves a raise dont you think? He's gonna be your number one goalie for years to come. While Price has been trying for 3 years and still cannot establish himself as a number one goalie in Montreal. Who cares about Plekanec or Biron. During the playoffs they were comparing Halak's performance to Roy!!! Under arbitration what did you think Halak is going to get? 4-5 mill at the most? Thats a great deal for a number one goalie who carried the team throughout the season.

ps: obviously you are also a Carey Price fanboy, but too bad the kid has been fucked over by the pressure of playing in Montreal. He can do better elsewhere

Hi Mr lack of reading comprehension. Do I think he deserves a raise? Absolutely. I guess you just choose to read the parts of my post that serve your needs. Where did I say he didn't? I never once said I liked this trade. As for Price he is still 22 yrs old. Goalies are often late bloomers. Why shouldn't I care for Plekanec? He led the team in scoring and is also their number one penalty killer at center.

Carey Price is still an RFA as well, whose to say that Montreal doesn't go for a different goalie and get rid of Price as well.

Also small other trade T.J. Hensick went to St. Louis as well

Interesting, there's no denying Price's talent but they just traded the guy that almost carried them to the stanley cup finals not to mention they wouldn't have even made the playoffs without him last season.

Yet they are too cheap to pay a legit number one goalie? That has failed written all over it.

Like I said before this was motivated by dollars. They overpaid badly for Gomez and Hamrlik. If Halak gets a big pay day that leaves them little room to improve in other areas. They desperately need scoring and larger players. As for Halak, he played amazing last year but there is no guarantee he will do the same thing next year. He has never played over 45 games in a single season his NHL career. Giving big pay days to goalies for one good season leads to contract issues such as Tim Thomas and Jean Sebastien Giguere. Now what really frustrated me last year was that the Habs scored an average of 2.25 goals when Price was in net but scored an average of 3.15 for Halak in the regular season. They played a more up tempo game for Halak IMO because they were more confident with him in net. Ideally I would have loved to see them both come back but in the reality of todays salary cap system it just wasn't meant to be. Then again Chicago and Philly proved you don't necessarily need an elite goaltender to make it all the way.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired Simon Gagne from the Philadelphia Flyers for Matt Walker and a fourth round pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

With Gagne, the Lightning now have an explosive top-six that also includes the likes of Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, and Steve Downie. Gagne is a point-per-game player, but he's been hampered in recent years by injury.

However, with his contract expiring at the end of the 2010-11 season, the Tampa Bay Lightning are taking on a minimal amount of risk and chances are he will have a great contract year. Jul. 19 - 2:56 pm et

Stupid contract I think. He get's $6 million in each of the first two years and then jumps to $11.5 and then $10.5 for a couple of years. By the time it comes to an end he's paid $550K. This could either be a good signing for NJ or it could turn shitty if Kovalchuk get's injured and becomes injury prone. Would be really tough to move him.

Plus....17 years?!?!

Chicago is walking away from the $2.75m award for Niemi. Looks like they are signing Turco to a cheap 1 year deal as a replacement.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=329318

The Hawks are really screwed with Campbell (7.14m), Huet (5.625m) and Stanley Cup / Conn Smyth bonuses (4.158m) taking up huge cap hits.

I'm still surprised they matched the offersheet on Hjalmarsson, they still need to clear cap space for next year, and they need to resign Seabrook next summer.

It was a shitty year to be a free agent goalie. Nabokov went to the KHL with the lack of teams needing a goalie. There is still a ton of goalies out there on the market needing a home:

-Niemi
-Theodore
-Toskala
-Emery
-Valiquette
-Dubielewicz
-Legace

If Karlsson/Keetley/Irving don't work as the backup this year, I am sure the Flames can have their pick of a couple goalies mid way through the year who would gladly sign.
