View Full Version : Anyone ever have "Mosquito Magnet"

Or similar items they sell at Home Depot, etc. The type that use propane and octenol? I'm sick of having to wear bugspray in the evenings to enjoy my patio and hammock. Makes me reak and have to have a shower before bed.

Something like this

http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=936458&Ntt=936458&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber

except the 1/2 acre version, which should cover a 80' radius if worked as advertised.

Anyone have any experiences?

The best thing I ever found was this little citronela fan thing. It had little citronela beads in front of a electric fan. Even though it sounds pretty lame. the thing worked awesome and saved me from many swarms of mosquitos. I used it around race city.

That seems unnecessarily complicated just to kill mosquitoes.

Why don't you use this?

I have no idea what the English name for this is but in the Philippines, this is prevalent all over the place.

i actually have a magnet in my backyard. in theory it works but just make sure its far away from where you are sitting. otherwise all the mosquitoes on the block end up in your backyard due to them being attracted. if you have a big yard they do work really good if you put it in a far off corner. after a day or 2 i probably had over a thousand of the little bastards in the net. haven't used it in awhile though. you have to watch them too because there is no way to know if you ran out of propane or not without keeping a eye on it.

Think it's called a mosquito coil or citronella coil :dunno:

Yeah thats a mosquito coil, I've seen them at Wallys world.

Or try one of these: http://www.off.com/citronella-bucket/

Or get citronella oil in some tiki lamps.

Problem with those coils, is you need like 4 of them going around your patio table to really keep them away, and they don't smell to good, either.

I just don't want to stay away, I want to ANNIHILATE these motherfuckers.

Thanks for the info 2ndhandlude, I do have a nice corner to put it in (down in the rv parking turned into a dog pen), but it doesn't get any wind down there, and the instructions say to have it somewhere windy for them to catch the scent.... maybe I'll put it on my garage roof

Ran these magnets at my parent's acreage. Works wonders, there's a slough near by and the mosquitoes were thick. 2 summers ago, got back from a trip and had to watch over the place. I could barely unpack my car without flocks of moquitoes around. Cracked that bad boy out and set it up.

Propane lasts about 3 weeks? Rough estimate.
Octenol lasts a month or so and they're not cheap.

The down sides as I see them. It takes awhile for it to work that you'll notice a difference.
You need to watch that the propane is full (two tank swap works best)
You should clean it once a season for it to keep working.

If you're in the city, fences, etc. could prove difficult to have good results.

In the city, possibly that fan setup Phenix talked about.

Omg that's $800!! I was hoping it was something I could get for the shop here, considering we're right by a stagnant lake and I have cars running in an out, the mosquitos can be quite overwhelming at times. But I think in order to control ours we'd need at least two of those!

Actually, the 1/2 acre one is $350CAD, not including propane tank, so the 1 acre one is probably $500

I was hoping there might be some kind of plant that would deter mosquitoes from gathering outside my front porch. Anyone know if such thing exists?

I swear I didn't go out of my way to look for it, but this article was on the front page of a blog I frequenet:

My front porch always has a swarm of mosquitoes hanging out, so I'll give this a try and let you all know if its effective.

Too bad they don't make a mosquito magnet for 20 acre lots... :(

I find citronella to be 100% useless, even when burning multiple candles/coils at a time. Just this weekend, we even had mosquitoes fly into the burning citronella candle and get stuck in the wax.

The only thing I've ever seen actually work is bug spray, but clearly this is the best solution:

Same on the citronlla. Useless marketing scam for women.

Thinking of building a bat trap for the acreage...

This whole weekend I've been working on my transmission/underneath car. Not only are the mosquitos not afraid of entering the garage, but as evidenced by my hands (bitten to shit) not afraid to taste used ATF, WD40, engine oil, pentosin, misc underbody grease.

I've been contemplating this for a final solution, but I hardly think it would be cost effective.

When I was looking, nowhere in Calgary. However even if you did find one, its too late in the season. They're far more effective if turned on in the spring.

I worked for the City of Winnipeg Insect Control Branch for 4 years, which was/is the largest mosquito abatement program in the country. Anybody who has found these magnets "working" are likely just experiencing downs related to the mosquito life cycle and changes in weather. It's especially rare in and around Calgary for them to be very bad for more than a week or 2. Winnipeg used a dozen or so super-sized versions of the CO2 magnets, used to attract as many mosquitoes as possible for West Nile testing, and the sites they were placed in never saw a meaningful change in light trap counts in those areas (used to measure mosquito levels in an area) regardless of whether the CO2 traps functioned or not. An individual mosquito will cover something like 20-something kms depending on wind, so controlling all of the ones in the area is not possible, and the CO2 emitted may actually attract more to your yard than control them. This was also the position of the city entomologists (effectively the top mosquito specialists there) I worked with during those years as well. So, feel free to buy one, but you're likely wasting your money.

30% DEET and light coloured pants and long-sleeved shirts are always going to be your best defenses. DEET is the most effective in masking the CO2 being emitted from you, which is what attracts the mosquitoes, with citronella in tests generally being marginally effective.

They say Marigolds are suppose to work, I have a natural repellent made from them and it seems to work quite well, not 100% effective but enough to be comfortable.

Bump from the dead.

My back yard was unbearable last night and we had to turn around 15 minutes into our dog walk because of how terrible they were. With a newborn you're not supposed to use DEET on them so right now he's stuck under a mosquito net. What does everyone use for their backyards for mosquito repellant lately? The ThermaCELL products keep popping up in my google searches, anyone have any experience with those? Ideally I'm just looking for something to put on the deck so the wife, kid, and I can hang out to have supper or read a book. My deck and yard are relatively small (total size of like 25x25 or something like that) so I don't need the huge $500 propane thing.

I had the thermacell things and I didn't find them effective. Funny this topic popped up, because my in-laws are considering the big propane mosquito magnet for their lake property. My main question about those is how long does it take for them to be effective? Is it a couple of hours, or do they have to run for days? Like if you were just up at the cabin for the weekend, and started running it friday afternoon, would it be making a difference by saturday, or no?

Appears something called the "Bite sheild" trap is the main competitor to the Mosquito Magnet brand.

From my research when I first started the thread, you need to turn it on the first day of spring, and keep it running all season. It's not a quick action thing, rather it just depletes the local mosquito herd over months. I never pulled the trigger because of this, but for some reason they haven't been that bad in my neighborhood for several years now. Actually... thinking about it, they tapered off when my in-laws moved to the east coast, and the new owners of their house filled in the pond.

Zappers are more fun and probably equally effective with octenol.

We have bought the candles from Canadian Tire for the lake and they work wonderfully, you just have to sit within a few meters of them. Can't remember the name though.

Do these work on mosquitos as well? For some reason I thought they were for black flies and moths.

Parent's have two of them on the acreage. You need to run them constantly to make a difference. A week and you can notice a change. Supposed to place between you and where the wind is blowing them in. A slough or long grass. Propane lasts about a month.
Also mosquito dunks work in any bodies of water. I would argue those do the most for reducing the #s of mosquitoes in a given year. But you're almost too late if you're using them now. They drop the surface tension of water and the eggs die. Eco-friendly to the water and other animals.

Ya gots to be lucky like me, mosquitos bite me and my skin doesn't react. I used to get bumps where bitten and they'd itch but as I've gotten older it just seems my body has built up an immunity to the little beasts. My wife, on the other hand, swells up almost like bee stings when she gets bit by a mosquito. Drives her crazy that they don't affect me any more.

Purchased a Dynatrap 2000 from Costco for $149 yesterday.

We back onto an environmental reserve and a river so back yard is infested with insects.

Would have purchased a propane one but seemed like more work.

We paid a guy $150 comes with a 1 month guarantee. Its a very dilute oil base and stays on your deck or house. Kills most common small insects. It went from unbearable to dont get bit at all

Product works quite well, been using it for a week now.

Have about 3/4" of bugs in the cannister.

Went from hating to use our backyard to seeing 4 insects on Saturday night. Not one flew by us....

So I recently bought a couple used magnets, for those who own these units how important is it to blow out the line with the little compressed air containers?

I typically, cranked the regulator down on my air compressor. and just used that rather than a CO2 cannister. Basically, you're pushing air through to clean it. Seems to work. I also use compressed air to clear everythign out because spiders make homes in them.

Costco has the Dynatrap 3 in stock at the warehouses so I decided to try one out for $85. If it catches lots I'll buy a 2nd one. It even comes with replacement bulbs.
