No, I IR modded a Rebel XT a few years ago. We went hiking on Thursday and I thought I'd bring it along cause I hadn't used it in two years.

Brad- Does it diminsh the fitness 'look' if you take some of the shine off her face?

And is that black seamless? Maybe work with your lights so that it looks black rather than washed out grey. Other than that nice job, these photos look pretty good.

Just the way it was, I'm pretty sure she had a spray tan for the competition she competed in the day before. She was a contestant in the WBFF championships.

Good eye.
Its not HDR, its over sharpened :)
Then shadows contrasts are brought way up. I didn't take the time to fix up the eyes from the rise in shadow contrast which is where you can really see it.

I was more or less messing around with the new features in CS5 and got carried away LOL.

Also grabbed a snap of these crazy African dogs.

They were jumping around biting each other for about 10 minutes making all the little kids cry.

Was not happy with how it turned out, anyone have secrets for shooting through glass? Cause I suck at it.

Your wild dog pic looks like a poor situation for the camera meter, bright sun on top and dark fur in the shade underneath.

Typically adding contrast and a touch of sharpening removes most of the effect glass has. Also try to shoot through an area that isn't covered in the slobber and finger prints of children. I usually set a black point for the contrast and I am 90% done. Another tip is to bring some glasswipes with your or something, if you don't mind people staring at you as you clean the glass lol.

I think most of you have seen these pics before but for reference sake these were all shot through some pretty crappy cage glass, several from the Calgary zoo:

I actually have that lens :) Managed to gank it from a buddy for $400 :)

I do see slight warping on the edges (on a T2i backup) but no where near what you see in the picture you posted. (on a 7D warping still exists but its very minor on both camera's)

I am a big fan on the Tokina when its stopped below 11, otherwise its detail goes south quickly. Autofocus is faster then any lens currently in my bag.

If you wanted you could always try it out to see.

thats perspective distortion, you wont correct it by using another UWA.

if you backed any from the subject then you would have less distortion. then you would need to increase the focal length to get the same composition. my guess is you were right next to the dog when you took the picture.

^^ Thanks Kavy, I may just take you up on that. I have been eyeing a wide for a while and the 11-16 as it gets amazing reviews on POTN.

And Yah Tomaz, I was pretty surprised to see it was that bad, I just liked the picture, cool perspective.

I would send your tokina in to get checked...it's rated as one of the best ultra wides on the market at the price point, so if you're having sharpness issues below F11 I would say you have a bad copy...the ones that I have toyed with were sharp as feck at F4.

But at what distance from the object?

I still agree, the distortion looks as if have the lens melted and could very well be a defect.

I was messing around with it at about 6" to a foot away...

an ultra wide at F11 you've got pretty much front to back sharpness anyway....just sayin...

but yes, as mentioned, shooting from a low angle with an ultra wide is going to give you all kinds of distortion regardless of the lens. Even the 14-24 is going to have some pretty amazingly nice looking distortion from that perspective :D mmmmmm....14-24

My Tokie 11-16 is giving me issues as well, it has a HUGE back focusing problem. I have the AF fine tune set to +20 on my D300 and it still isn't as sharp as I would like it to be.

As well, at certain focal lengths, the lens gives out an aperture value of either triangle or 0. I would send it in for servicing, but I bought it used off a guy who originally bought it from Hong Kong. Worked well when I bought it, so I don't fault the seller, but now I'm not sure what to do with it. Was looking at the 17-35mm F/2.8, but then I need to buy a D700 as well.

Gibson is that an attempted HDR? doesnt work for me at all. Too neon and over processed, and WAY over sharpened. Wouldn't be a bad photo if it was just one exposed properly and straightened though.

Gibson
07-12-2010, 12:54 PM
No, not HDR, I dropped in a different sky (and not very well I might add) cause the original one was extremely boring. I was trying out some different things for this edit.

Here's what would be closer to the original, standard sky and no sharpening. Appreciate the feedback f'realz

Ah okay. The original looks much better. You can select the sky and adjust your levels, just make sure you do a feather around it so you dont the the harsh or blurry lines. I'd straighten it a bit too.

Thank you!

I took it on July 11th on the small hill right next to Stampede ground. There is fireworks every night after grand stand show around 11ish p.m.

Sigh such a great wedding day until my SB-900 died on me. Sigh i can now see why I'm glad i'm switching away from speedlights and going to dedicated monolights. Let there be light I say!

^woah, u've killed a 580exII and now a nikon flash too? this a manufacturer defect too? :p

Nah I think the flash tube on it went. I get the feeling speedlights weren't really created to take this many 1/1 full powered flashes. I guess it's the only problem shooting into the sun with speedlights is that you must crank the power on them.

The 580ex literally melted itself back when it went. I think I showed a couple people that couldn't believe it but the front plastic casing nearly had a hole in it lol.

I think the images from this wedding in particular will be the ones I use for a magazine feature that I was approached about. Very exciting all in all. I think I find my job more fulfilling each week.

I wouldn't use that shot Quazi, I've seen way better from you - that shot looks pretty overexposed..

quazimoto
07-18-2010, 08:58 AM
Nah the exposure is bang on since it's all natural light. The highlights from the sun on the deck of the bridge would be impossible to pull in anyways with the same setting. That was the only thing I wish I had yesterday was cloud cover but c'est la vie that's the life of an on location photographer. Have to work with what you are given sometimes. I tell my clients that I like to mix it up and do a variety of natural light candid shots where I'm always a good distance away and some staged shots where I can better control the lighting. I feel this way the couple gets a really good mix of both formal and candid shots. So to speak, the best of both worlds.

are you looking at the same picture as me? while he's definitely posted some better shots, and I'll agree with you on that point...that shot does not look overexposed.

quazi...first one does look overexposed, all 3 look like you forgot your composition...and they look way too busy...hdr-ish....in my opinion anyways...

wouldve been nice to frame the subjects with the surroundings rather than have them smack dab in the middle...

I was thinking almost "dave hill"-ish, but I didn't mind the comp.

Comments and criticism would be appreciated, thanks in advance! I do notice the little brown orange mess on the bottom left on the pavement, but I'm unsure about how to go about removing it... :dunno:

as for the shot, not a bad concept...need some more light on the car though.

Woah, yeah! Thanks for that, really appreciate it! Looks better without that distracting spot now... wasn't too sure how to remove it.

As for the lighting, I figured the car was lacking some light as your eyes naturally focus on the building first instead of the car. Thanks Go4Long! :)

Now I just need to invest in some lighting equipment..

Haha... now I feel like an idiot. Thanks, here's another one, of a friends civic. I'm quite new to photography and I'm currently playing around with my brothers Canon XTi to get a feel for photography before I look into investing into my own equipment. I'm getting kinda hooked onto this new hobby :)

I had to fool around with this one - such a nice FG! I like the shot, but I found the left side a little distracting. It's a little soft as well, but thats probably a kit-lens you are shooting through.

I've noticed on a few of the shots you've posted that it sort of looks like the people were photoshopped onto a background. Maybe a little too much light on the people?

The other one I'm thinking of was the panorama from Ramsay Park overlooking the Saddledome.

Just my $0.02.

Had a super long newborn shoot tonight, she needed to eat between every single prop or position change! These are the dangers of doing a shoot at 2 weeks old...that damn growth spurt!

Here are a few teasers I did for the parents

Second ones head position doesn't look natural. A little disturbing looking in my opinion.

I thought that too, combo of the wrinkles in the jersey and the head tilt make it look strange.

Haha we adjusted this little girl's head/body position at least 15 times. She was having none of it. Within 10 seconds or so it had always flopped back to that spot. The parents thought it was really cute, but I knew it was going to look weird, I even said to the parents that it looked like her head actually belonged on someone else's body at that angle. I have a few others of this pose that might have a more natural looking tilt to it, I'll look tomorrow. It does really show how crumpled up newborns are though.

...really now? you don't see the pretty much pure white in many parts of the photo like I do? The top of their heads and the back of her arm? Patches of her dress AND his suit? Are you seeing a nice even exposure because I'm seeing a whole lot of blown out parts..
