Everyone should be running premium... regardless of the car...

There is a reason the 305 in my Cutlass has 350,000 km and doesnt burn oil and has gone without an engine rebuild.

Nothing but premium from mile 0.

As far as Octane goes, isn't 94 a waste in a normally aspirated engine? 91 or 92 premium is what I was told to put in mine, anything higher is supposedly useless...

Correct me if I am wrong...

its not magic fairy juice that adds horsepower, UNLESS your ECU is intelligent enough to advance timing and take advantage of it

Its Ethanol, all 92+ at husky/mohawk is that I have seen.

I have read that an ethanol blend may not be that good for a lot of us... yes, you won't have any knock issues... and yes, it's cleaner... but since it's a blend, it has less BTU's of engergy per gallon compared with 100 percent petroleum... therefore might actually produce LESS POWER in your car. Anyone know a little more about this?

Mohawk/Husky or any other ethanol blend has less energy. This is why fuel economy is worse with Mohawk/Husky fuels compared to say, Shell, Petro Canada, etc. At cruising, you need more power to maintain a certain speed, so you have to increase throttle to make up for less power, therefore higher fuel consumption. Based on fuel consumption alone, I'm guessing I make about 2% less horsepower using Mohawk (compared to Shell) assuming boost levels is the same. That's about 6whp at 12psi.

Of course, if you can take advantage of the higher octane properties of the fuel, you can make more power. On my car, I make roughly 13whp per octane. So on 92, I can turn up the boost and make about 6whp more than 91 octane Shell. On 94, I can make 32whp more.

Hope that explains it.

My 03 Nissan Altima manual recommends to avoid ethanol/methanol fuel unless under certain %. I don't know if there's truth to that or Nissan just covering their ass.

Up to 10%. That's what's allowed by law. The reason they state that in the manuals is because there's E85 fuels available (85% ethanol) designed for flexible fuel vehicles. 85% ethanol would mess up your car. Fortunately, E85 isn't available in Alberta.

Are you sure that notation is correct? E85 would be 85 octane with an unspecified percentage of ethanol additive I thought, because if you go to any mohawk or husky and look at the 92 or 94, it is labeled as E92 and E94. Or am I missing something?

Yes I'm sure. When E85 fuel and FFV's get rolled out, I'm sure Husky/Mohawk would change their naming system. E28 is an "official" fuel name.

http://www.e85fuel.com/

BTW - E85 (85% ethanol) has an octane rating of 105 . Unfortunately, energy content is significantly less, but it'll be interesting to see if the high octane (and big boost) can make up for that loss :).

Imagine being able to run 24psi daily, safely, cheaply (E85 fuel is a lot cheaper than normal fuels due to higher consumption rate). Blow off Valves are gonna sound awesome!

the Yellow MAX is Diesel, but you can put that in your car and report to us the results ;)

The 94 on the new pumps is a red look with a checkered flag on it. On the older pump it looks just like Premium.

Hey All,

Is 94oct petrol a big thing over there? Here is Oz we get 98oct fuel from all of the major petrol stations - Shell, BP and Mobil...

Shell Optimax is very nice petrol - 98oct and around $1.04 p/l makes the car go much harder than the standard 91oct fuel!

I'm on 94 for 2 weeks now with my VQ35DE. I drive as I used to, with the same routes etc. 80% passive and 20% aggressive.

While I do feel a slightly better pick up then 91 (but like AWD, the difference could be just in my head). But gas consumption has increase form an average of 10.4 to 11L/100km, a ~6% increase.

I've heard that ethanol blended gas is weak and give poor mileage. Is this why?
