I was looking at getting the 12" Orion competition subwoofer and running a mono-amplifer to it. Is Orion a good choice in competition subs. I heard that MTX does a good job for competition subs. For Competition subs, should i look at an amp in which the rms power ratings are about equal (sub and amp)?

look for coparable wattage yes, but also consider the rating of output at different ohms and the ohms of the sub andwhere it has sdual voice coil or not!

Since most competition subs have dual voice coil, what should i be looing for in an amp?

I don't think MTX is your best choice for competition. Are you looking for LOUD subs or clean sounding ones?

I am looking for the best combination of both loudness and sound quality...who makes the best..my preference is too sound quality though

Orion does make some excellent subwoofers, and so does JL Audio. A couple of W6v2's and you should be set for a perfect combination of SQ and SPL.

Are you planning on running one or two subs? or more?

Right now i am thinking of just getting one. I have only heard about the JL and have heard only good things. The amplifier for the sub would need to be how powerful to run one of these subs at its optimum power? Who makes a good amplifier to power one of these subs?

For a JL w6, i'd buy a JBL - great price, good power, and exactly the amount you need for your application.

Does JBL only make one amp. Which JBL amp should i get and also should i go ahad and buy the Power Wedge sealed box that JL makes for their subs or go with something else. What type of box would be the best?

Best box is a sealed enclosure for the JLs - good sound quality.

JBL makes a range of amps, all great and well-priced, which is why they are so popular. Get a 600 watt JBL and you should be set

keeper92587

Is that 600 watts max or rms.. i take it it means max and probab about 350 rms..what level should the ohm be at or the best level?

also..why would you prefer the w6v2 model instead of the w3v2 model

the jl w6v2 is one of the best subs jl has. it has both a combination of spl and sq which is what you are looking for.. the w3v2 is a lower model sub which wont even cut it for competition..
for the amp.. get the jbl 1200.1
but be careful when you buy jl subs.. they have weird ohm configuartion.. like 1.5 ohms or 3.. so i have no clue how the hell those things are wired..

^^ Summed up why the W6's are better than the W3's - it's a higher model, but expect to pay some serious cash for them.

And a 1200.1 would be WAY too much power for a single W6v2...

That.Guy.S30
12-18-2003, 01:30 PM
1200.1 puts 600 at 4 ohms.. but depeneding on how you wire it i guess the 600.1 can do.. but freakin jl and there stupid ohm configuration.. i can never figure it out..

man screw the w6v2.. just get the w7.. ahhaha costs around 1200 for 1 sub.. so watch out the w6v2 i have seen for around 600

for recreation would the w3v2 be a good choice....with a smaller jbl amp. Also, JBL amps seem to be pretty expenseive, are there any for cheaper or should i just shop around. ?

That.Guy.S30
12-18-2003, 01:33 PM
yea just get them off of ikesound.. and they are dirt cheap.. you can get a 1200.1 for around 300 CDN

keeper92587
12-18-2003, 01:34 PM
what about the 12w3v2 not for competition, just for fun and the smaller jbl amp?

For normal use, i'd definately recommend a pair of 10W3v2's! They are really loud subs, and they don't take a lot of power - on top of that, they sound really good.

But what do I know...I'm biased. I've got a pair of them :D

Weapon_R
12-18-2003, 02:37 PM
Oh yeah, I'm not sure what your budget is, but JBL amps are NOT expensive. Check Ikesound and see - a 1200 watt amp will run you a little over 200US, and it's not inflated output either. These amps are selling like crazy because they are the best bang for your buck amps you can get imo

JL audio W7's are one of the best ones out there.
if you looking for competition subs then JL is one of the good choices!!
and if you want just one sub then think about getting 13" W7..
other good ones are
Brahma Mark II's
they are pretty good as well!!
and for amps
look for JL audio mono amp 1000/1
this should be good for one JL audio W7.

so it would be beter to get a 10w3v2 and a 300 watt rms at 4ohm amp. sound good?

Weapon_R
12-18-2003, 05:04 PM
Better than what? A JL W3v2 is a great subwoofer, but it is not as good as a W6. Listen to both and make your decision based on that.

would the 12w3v2 be better than the 10w3v2?

depending on how tight you want the bass, that is what the difference in 10-12 inches.. and how much room you have got of course..

if you goin to buy the amp off the net, might i suggest you buy the sub off the net too.. they have less mark up price and you have less hassle from bullshit audio guys who dont know jack at places like FS and places like that. i am extremly baised on my infinity kappa perfect! ahah but anyways.. since you are strayin away from comp now..

might i suggest a alpine type r.. yes alot of people do have them.. becuase they are good subs and dont cost alot. plus it has both the combination of sq and spl you are looking for.

now go to soundsaround or somethin and listen to the subs and which one you prefer and see if they can cut you a deal, if they cant just buy it over the net!

and if you have a money range your willin to spend on your system that would help alot

keeper92587

you are talking about the component system when you were talking about the alpine type r. wouldn't i need an amp for those in order to get the optimum enjoyment?

Weapon_R

What is your location?

Alpine makes subwoofers called the Type R. They also make components, and yes, any good speaker should also be amped to get optimal sound.

i live in atl, ga, usa...about the sub, when you say the 10" would be tighter than the 12", does that mean it will give me better sound quality instead of loudness. Also, jl on their web-site posted how big the box should be if it was a sealed box, should i listen to that or do you have something better you know of?

That.Guy.S30
12-18-2003, 09:52 PM
ok.. to answer your question.. theorectically the 10s should give you tighter bass, and i meant the type r subwoofer.
if you are goin with jl audio, the specs they give you are probably the best but depending on if you want it loud, which should be in a ported box, or if you want it nice and tight which should be in a sealed box.

check out sounddomain.com and check out the forums if you have any further questions..
seems like only me and weapon_r are answering your questions here

Not many people frequent this area, but use the JL specs for your box as they obviously have the best for their subs.

The reason why 10" subs are the most popular is because they have the best all-around capabilities - they appeal to those who want tight bass, and they can also produce some very loud bass. They can also move quickly and work well with faster beats such as that of techno or trance.

When you get into bigger sized subwoofers, they tend to provide sloppier bass better suited for rap music and such.

Aight guys, i have the new Jl audio E1400D amp mono or 2 channel amp i believe and im running a single 12w3v2 with a sealed box. i need some pro advice b/c i want some loud, really good sounding bass without any distortion or nething wrong from the sub. Should i add another 12w3v2 or upgrade to one 12w6v2 b/c this amp i believe is 500 watts which is way too much for one 12w3v2?!?
