Wife and I are going to get a dog. Looking at midsized breeds that would work for us and found this guy. Seems awesome.

Want a smart easy to train dog (were thinking collie/retriever) but dont want something quite that big and high energy.

Anyone have/had a Wheaton Terrier?

They are amazing dogs. Very well suited for family life. Terriers are pretty "driven" dogs so patience is key. They do not do well in hot weather, I wouldn't leave him/her in the car for long for example.

It was the first thing that came to mind.

Do you know how awkward it is to have pictures of Wil Wheaton open on your work desktop? I'm less paranoid looking at porn.

I had 2 of them (one after another) growing up. Awesome dogs.

Easy to train, very laid back. I will prob get another on when I get out of my condo and into a house.

You do have to keep on top of there hair though, or it just becomes a nightmare. But they look sweet all shagged out

Perfect thank you. Biggest draw back for us is we have a townhouse so cant have too big a dog and we also have a cat so I need something that I can train to not kill the cat.

I've had two wheatons, I think they're amazing.

They have quirky personalities, but aren't like stupid little chihuahuas or big greasy ass pit bulls (not hating on pit bulls). They don't smell like shit, the way pit bulls do, they don't ejaculate everywhere they way pit bulls do, and they don't try to eat through the walls the way some dogs do.

Like the other guy said, they're pretty set in their ways, but if you're nice to them from young, they'll be a blast. The best part, of course, is zero shedding.. so you don't have to be "that guy" everywhere you go.
x10 for wheatons.

Also, you get a terrier that doesn't have part of its tongue hanging out, making you feel uncomfortable the way you would if it was showing its penis.

I have a 13 year old wheaton, and she is awesome. You say you don't want high energy, but my dog is 13 and still has tons of energy. While growing up having a nice big yard was good, except for when she got into the bushes in the fall. Like others have said their hair (as it is not fur) can be a pain in the ass to take care of, and does get matted quite easily if you don't brush it often.

Super smart dogs, although sometimes too smart for their own good. My dog got herself into lots of trouble when she was a puppy, learning how to open doors and such.

My dog has tons of character though, and still lots of energy for a 13 year old dog, I wouldn't trade her for anything.

I would say one thing though, make sure you are willing to walk a dog every day to give it the needed exercise, as I am sure that is part of what has kept our dog so healthy and keeps her energy in check.

Here is my dog being lazy the other day;

^^ that is awesome thanks. I guess I should clarify what I mean about the energy. I want something that will play fetch, walk with us, and play with us. I guess I meant low energy as my parents have a beagle and although I love him he is way too high strung. Running around all hours of the night, going for walks we never walk him fast enough. And my dad takes him for two or three walks a day. He is nuts. Must be a hound thing.

I called one breeder but they were not expecting a litter for another 2 years.
Anyone know where else I can look / call?

Ahh sounds good, then yeah if that is the case a wheaton should fit the bill well... Only thing is we were never able to teach my dog fetch, lol. She knows what we want, stares at us and plays with the toy herself instead lol.

I know there are not too many breeders around for these dogs, we eneded up going out to BC to get ours, and even then still had to wait a bit of time.

Anyone know where else I can look / call? My parents got one out of Rhode Island, I'll try and get you the contact info.

As for high energy, I found both of mine to be exactly what you describe. They relax at the end of the day with you, and will run while you're rollerblading and stuff like that. The one I had when I was a kid made my back yard his own personal race track and would rage around in circles along the fence line, but eventually relaxed.

I grew up with one, and it was a great dog for the most part.
Really well behaved, except when it spotted a rodent or a gopher, then it would just flip its shit and chase after it for until I called her back. I am definatly going to get another when i move out of my condo.

We wanted a wheaten as well but we didn't want to keep up with the grooming. We opted for a Sheltie. I love her! I had one growin gup as well - great for training and lots of energy but also relaxes and hangs out while we watch TV.

We got ours from outside Red Deer. Rolling Hills Shelties.

Halfway between that dog at your place and Gracie. I've had them before. They're working dogs, so they require good training if you want them well behaved. Generally smart. But can be big $$$ if you get them from a good breeder.

AKC dogshow this weekend at Spruce Meadows, largest outdoor dogshow in western Canada. Google Alberta Kennel Club and find the schedule on their website and look to see what ring and what time Wheatons are in. Talk to the people handling/showing them after they are done in the ring if you wish to find someone more local....

Well thanks everyone for your input. After looking at breeders we thought that the $2000.00 could be spent better elsewhere.

However we did end up getting a rescue dog, not 100% finalized but should have her by this weekend if we are getting her. German Shepard Terrier X, 10 months old.

Through Pawsitive or ARF (wife has been arranging it, I just go for the car ride). She is great. Listens, knows sit, stay, shake, come. She wont get much bigger than she is now. Small compared to a normal lab/shepard. Surgeries are already done. etc. etc.

My biggest worry (and why we dont have her yet) is that a couple trips we have planned may not fly once we have a dog. I am not someone who can just ditch my dog in a kennel for a month. So I am a little torn about having to give up what is probably my last europe trip if we get her.

German sheppard/terrier cross? Now you are gonna have your hands full with a dog that is too smart for it's own good! lol! Nice...

^^ we think he is a terrier, he is a german sheppard x with something. Doubtful it is a poodle.

A month? You'd better be looking for a good dogsitter if you're looking at a month. Or a family member. Kennel for a month is just mean. When you get her, bring her on over to meet Gracie out back in neutral ground. They'll probably get along just fine.

Yeah the biggest thing is the change in life we 'may' have to make. Plus the costs of the damned thing. I feel like I am starting to get nickle and dimned to death with everything lately and if we take on this dog the chances of me being able to go to europe or on a big trip are pretty slim.

However having her the rest of the time would be awesome.

Dont worry if we get her, she will be coming over. Maybe a fire this weekend?

Gone to edmonton. Otherwise I'd be up for that. And you are getting nickeled and dimed. That's part of pet ownership. :)

Dropped off my Airedale at Sundog Kennels out by Cochrane for 3 weeks. Yeah it's a little scary for the owner, but they're in good hands. Greatest thing: they get to pretty much play outside all day and there's individual rooms for each dog to sleep in at night.

I will +1 for Sundog, it's a drive but they are wonderful and possibly the most responsible kennels I have ever seen or visited.

Yeah just beware of the owner... She's a complete Nazi and not the best person to deal with. She handles dogs way better than she handles humans, and hey, that's all that matters in this case.

^^I find that with the best dog handlers. They pretty much hate people. Fine with me!
