Bernard Callebaut is in receivership..wonder what happened?

Expand too much? Unfortunately there chocolates went from top notch to just like all the other waxy chocolate over the years.

Most people don't have the money lying around to pay a premium price for chocolate, I suppose.

They went under because people only bought their chocolate because of the name. Their clientele ran out of credit to buy chocolate due to the economic downturn and this is where they are today.

My opinion of course

My theory.

Got too big... too fast... and spread themselves too thin.

Yup, peeps can't justify "going out" to buy chocolate anymore.

Same thing with coffee and Starbucks, the "stay in" personalized coffee makers from Tassimo and Keurig are selling like mad though.

"For 27 years we have lovingly devoted ourselves to offering Canadians with chocolate that they can proudly give to their families and friends, however as with many other businesses the downturn in the economy left us holding real estate purchased at a premium price, that is now valued at a very deflated price. This circumstance underpins our situation and is the impetus for this very difficult decision," explains Callebaut.

Caught playing the real estate game they say, I point to poor management as always. Blame everyone and anyone other than those who cannot see past their bloated egos.

They were seeking 6.5 million two weeks ago (Edmonton Journal, July 24/2010 I believe) from investors, that fell through. The funds were to be used for "expansion" and refurbishing some old stores. More like a bonus for those who now are laying blame....

Their chocolate became assembly line products made of generic ingredients. I guess they figured people wouldn't notice?

Last I checked, there's been more than one economic downturn in the last 27 years. Poor mgmt is what's to blame here.

So any recommendations in Calgary? We use to love Callebaut when he only had a single shop they weren't waxy and assembly lined like mentioned. They expanded and we pretty much stopped going. I can't stand Oliviers or Choklat

Sorry, no local recommendations... but the next time you find yourself in the canton of Schaffhausen I may have some suggestions.

What do you guys recommend for chocolates. I must say I disagree with some of your opinions, im not a connoisseur but I am picky regarding my tastes, and I always felt bernard callebault were delicious. Unlike other chocolates that ive had their ingredients arnt overbearing. By that I mean I usually hate coconut/mint/white chocolate but their ingredients are balanced and the final product tastes very good. I would never spend that kind of money on the chocolates themselves, but sometime family members receive them as gifts and I devour the little boxes.

Leonidas > Bernard. I've been going to this store in Britannia for years, check them out! No, they're not cheap little chocolates, but they are the best I've ever had!

Thanks I knew there were some other stores in Calgary but I just never took the time and don't know anyone that had been. We will check them out this week since we are all home this week. Thanks for the suggestion.

Chokolat in Inglewood is damn good. One of the only small shops in North America that actually makes their own chocolate from scratch.

Sad, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I walked into Bernard Callebault and bought something.
