I have a panasonic blu ray home theatre system with the 5 speakers and sub. I have my xbox attached to it and it plays fine, as well do ipods, movies etc. How do I get normal tv shows to come out on the home theatre system as opposed to just the tv speakers?

Are you using a cablebox of some kind?

If you are using a cablebox (shaw/telus/satallite etc) you can wire that into your receiver for audio.

If not, lots of TV's have audio outputs that you can wire into your amp, some even have optical outputs.

Basically it comes down to connecting your TV/cablebox into the receiver.

What is the make / model of the TV and Receiver? (And cablebox if applicable)

It's a sanmsung 42 inch plasma with all the hook

In that case you'll only be able to get TV sound through your home theatre speakers if your TV has a set of Audio Out ports. I know mine does.

Most TVs should at least have an optical out on the back. Look for that, then connect it to your receiver.

Your Samsung TV should have an optical out on the back, if your Panasonic receiver has an optical input, you will be good to go. An optical cable is $5.

We can tell you for sure if you give us model numbers.
