Hey guys, my parents have given me the task of finding some new tires for our general workhorse/winterbeater/family vehicle. Its a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Ive never looked for tires for a truck so im not to sure whats decent and whats not. My dad would prefer to put a winter tire on, but of course hes stingy with money because it is just a cheap beater. It will be driven lots on the winter, but also I do lots of trips towing my atv in the summer and some off-road stuff as well.

Any suggestions at what kind of tires to look at?

Ifyou want a tire with a svevere winter rating but still an all terratin year round use, check out the General Grabber AT2 or BFG All Terrain TA. You can get nicer tires for street use only but these 2 will give you better snow use in an "all around" AT tire without have 2 dedicated for winter and everything else...

Bridgestone Dueler At Revos are my favorite tire for any truck. I put them on my old Cherokee and they were awesome. They aren't usually cheap though.

Maybe check kijiji, lots of used sets of tires on there.

tirebob do you have any experience with Toyo Open Country A/Ts? Only problem is I cant find them in any size remotely close in LT to what I need for the wheels I want to use.

BF Goodrich Longtrail T/A Tours are great all year tires.

I was not blown away by BFG All Terrains on my work truck this winter. In my opinion they weren't good on ice, and they weren't good on snow.

If I was looking for what you're looking for, I'd consider Cooper Zeon LTZ's. Or something that can be studded. We used to run Cooper ST's in the winter with studs and they felt like they'd go anywhere.

Edit: I don't know if the Zeon tires would be any good in any condition, just that they look like they might be.

The thing is with the BFG All Terrain and General Grabber is that although they both have some siping. It's not enough. I would recommend the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac, it has decent siping for snow and ice and it has the winter snowflake rating. Plus, it's an agressive tread pattern is great for on and off road. Might be a tad noisey as it's in between an AT and an MT

I like my toyo at's however they seem to wear fairly fast for a 10 ply. I think my next set is bfg at2's.

The General Grabber AT2 is apparently a decent all year tire.

Its really coming down to finding tire in the size/rating I need I guess. I cant get Toyo O-CATs in 235/70/16LT which would be close to original diameter overall and my first choice.

Get the nokian vatiivas. Everyone I know with absolutely loves them and they're great winters too

It currently has Vativas on it. They were decent but wore out quick and were expensive!

Our work trucks (Dakotas) have hakkapeliitta tires and they are amazing in snow. Probably a bit better in your size too.

Dont know about wear as we dont care and/or track.

The Nokians would be awesome but they are getting a little pricey I think. Probably going to see what the cheapest winter tire I can get for it is.

Ended up grabbing some Michelin All Seasons with lots of siping last night at Costco for $700 all in.
