METRO VANCOUVER - Three men are dead and two were sent to hospital after a speeding BMW veered into a closed construction lane and slammed into a construction truck on Highway 1 early this morning.
Four men in their 40's from the Langley-Aldergrove area were travelling eastbound near Golden Ears Way at what witnesses described as a "ridiculous" speed for an 80-km/h construction zone, according to an RCMP press release.
Police investigators believe that alcohol as well as excessive speed was a factor in the triple-fatality accident.
At about 3:30 Friday morning, the new model BMW veered from the right lane through a barrier of pylons into a closed construction lane, crashing into a one-tonne flatbed truck occupied by two construction workers.
The driver of the BMW and two of his passengers were instantly killed while the front passenger sustained some injuries and was sent to hospital. He has since been released, according to Sgt. Dave Savoy of the Port Mann Highway Patrol.
One of the construction workers in the parked flatbed was sent to hospital and the other was treated and released at the scene.
Savoy said three of the occupants in the speeding car were wearing seatbelts including both the driver and the lone survivor.
Due to horrific impact of the crash, however, seatbelts "had no bearing" on the potential survival of the three deceased, said Savoy.
Savoy said it would likely be some time before police and the coroner service would be able to positively identify the crash victims as some of the deceased had no identification and the crash survivor had just met the other men that night, according to Savoy.
The accident closed both lanes of the Trans-Canada highway Friday morning.
