Premium Sound system in GTI Question

So I recently acquired a 2007 GTI with the premium sound system. Personally I find the sound terrible. Now from what I understand there is a factory installed amp under the drivers seat.

My question to all the GTI owners is: Can I Change the head unit and still have that amp functional.

My first instinct is to assume yes but I am finding conflicting reports on different forums.

if you think the sound is bad there is really no point in keeping that amp.... it will still sound bad.

no amp under the seat in the gti's in canada, maybe in the states. from what i know at least. if you want better sound most people get a new head unit and are happy with the results.
