View Full Version : Beast of a Mazda on Deerfoot - Need insight

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light for me on the newer Mazdas. I was on deerfoot and spotted a red hatch with a hood scoop and the front smiley face was MASSIVE!! Anyway, the car itself looked bone stock but when he passed me, I gave it a go and for the short little while in 4th, i couldn't pass him and was pretty shocked. The car had what looked to be stock dual exhaust but again, thee thing was pretty fast!

Does anyone know this car or the specs? :dunno: i'm aware that the stock turbos can take a lot of extra boost but wow, I was completely surprised! I believe it's a Mazda 3 but it's for sure turbo'd!!

Speed3 I would think. They have a surprising amount of power; I think the sales guy said around 280ft/lbs stock.

You probably saw a Mazdaspeed3 which puts out 263 hp stock.

I use to have one, but not the ones with the smily face but the previous gen which also had the same 263 hp. It's pretty fast.

Taken from Mazda Canada website.

The primary development goal for the 2010 MAZDASPEED3 was to build on the Zoom-Zoom character of the successful front-wheel drive Mazda3, creating a flagship performance model that would be a bold contender in the global market. The 2010 MAZDASPEED3's direct-injection turbocharged powerplant boasts both outstanding acceleration and smooth controllability throughout its power range. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and complemented by a sport-tuned suspension and limited-slip differential, the result is a sports compact for the serious performance enthusiast.

2.3L direct-injection turbocharged 4-cylinder MZR engine with 263 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque

6-speed manual transmission

Oversized power-assisted front and rear disc brakes

Front: Sport tuned independent, strut type and coil springs

Rear: Sport tuned independent, multi-link type and coil springs

Front and rear stabilizer bars

Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)

------------

The older model looks a lot better though

This was my old ride.

Here is a comparison on the Mazda Speed 3 with a GTI. Stock turbo on these puts them at 5.5 for the 0-60. There is power charts and stuff on it too.

The Speed3 is definately a beast until you chip the GTi, then the lighter, more nimble Gti has 254hp & 297 lb-ft of torque...

I spin my wheels through 3rd gear now! :burnout:

Or you could put a Cobb Accessport in the Speed3 :) and it's a nice little rocket.

Nah, chipped VW's always have trouble putting their power down if you're at full throttle, even with great tires.

Looks wise, the mazda has shit all on the GTI. as a matter of fact I hate the new mazda's with that smily shit front grill. Looks like a piece of garbage. All you have to do is sit in the new GTI and you'll be convinced. Shit I sat in one at the car show, and it felt like I was sitting in my new x5, which was over 100k.

According to my april motortrend rag they weigh about the same with the mazda having better braking and handling. Also a cai on the mazda and its more powerful than a chipped gti while still retaining warranty.

Having said that I prefer the 2010 gti to ms3 after driving each. The vw gives up some performance but for the money its the best all round car in class imo.

I had a small 'heat' with a Speed3 the other day, and I was very surprised at it's ability to keep up with me through the corners and the straights. Are they RWD?

Besides the MS3 (MazdaSpeed 3) they also come with a 2.5L engine in those small cars. It's not enough to make it a performace car, but it sure makes them zippy.

Speed3 = 2.3L turbo for all gens
The '10 + GT models have the new 2.5L.

yea no kidding. Got a ride in one while back, totally catches you by surprise since you just pass it off as a Mazda and it just can't be taken seriously with that huge smile up front.

Too bad about it being FWD but if they put the 2.5L in the RX8 I imagine Mazda would have a pretty nifty car.

Feels great. Little bit more power down low, but noticeably beefs up the powerband up high as well. Stock, the turbo seems to run out of breath around 5000rpm, the AP extends it to around 5700. I have the Cobb SF intake as well though.

I heard from a first-gen MS3 owner that one of the problems of swapping the intake and turning up the boost on its undersized stock turbo was that if you nailed it below 3k the turbo would spool almost immediately and it was too much for the rotating assembly at that low speed. It was reportedly one of the reasons Mazda is and was so crazy about warranty service.

Did they fix that with the second generation (bigger turbo, etc)? I was under the impression that the first gen had really tough internals.

Granted, it's not that great of an idea to floor it below 3k in any car, regardless of how reinforced the engine's guts are.

They're super neat cars. I would love to have one for a second car, but it feels weird to only have turbo hatchbacks when there's so much else out there.

yeah, it was drop from 100km/h into 4th and I didn't even think about 3rd for some reason. Tried driving from 100 and dropped it into 3rd gear and TOTALLY different car! it dropped to about 6 K and wow, did it go!

Ok let me tell you this,

I drove both Speed 3 and GTI back to back and VW is clearly subjectively superior in my opinion. Never mind the nice interior and the handling. It may have less power than the speed 3 but mazda has Horrible torque steer, vague handling and it just feels uncontrollable, which may sound like fun but it isnt. I would go for a GTI anyday.

+1 for the GTI

I too have driven both and would take the gti over ms3 but the mazda's handling is far from vague and uncontrollable, a little torque steer though.

For sure, a stock s2k should have no problem keeping up to ms3 never mind a turbo'd one. Completely different power bands.
