the shelter's emergency air and food supplies would only last 48 hours.

how do they expect them to survive 4 months?

Eat whatever they're currently eating, poop it out, eat it again, and the cycle begins or start eating the weakest person

Actually, they lasted 17 days on 48hr supplies. Now there's a pathway to them, supplies can be send down that small tunnel.

But mentally, how would you deal with 4 months in a room almost 1km underground.

Supplies are being sent to them... I guess they will be sent lights and stuff.. Hmm 4 mines in a stupid mine... lots and lots of board games lol.. Or send a tv down lol ...

33 net books and a router with a long ass antenna

but really, they are stuck down there because of poor resources and shitty company maps/diagrams to get them out? I feel that if this was in the states or even up here that it'd be dealt with within a weeks time or less :dunno:

Comeon, this is Canada. We spend four months huddled in the dark in near hibernation in our homes.

I imagine they have shafts for small parcels of food, air and electrical lines.

As well as being careful not to cave it in even more.

Apparently they found a source of water, quality unknown.

I think they need to lower in some hookers and blow. That is the least they cold do to help keep the miners straight.

Are there air quality issues? Or I guess they could probably pump fresh air down the same tunnels they are using to give them food.

I don't get how some of you guys can laugh of about this. They've already been trapped down there for 17 days and they've got another 4 more months ahead of them. Just knowing you'd be stuck in a dark hole deep underground for almost 5 months would really wear a person down. I don't know if I could last more than a day before snapping, forget about 5 months.

i'd see it as a pretty sweet deal getting paid presumably in full for sleeping all day and eating when food lands on the ground.

it's part of why miners are paid so well. these guys are lucky.

I see. I read the post wrong it's 3am. I thought he was saying there lucky because now they are going to get paid to sit around and chill for 4 months.

And really is it a sweet deal? I just don't think I could ever see it that way. Being stuck in a dark stinky filthy room for 4 months with a bunch of dudes, isn't worth any amount of money. Sure there lucky to be alive, but the situation it self is a total bummer.

It will probably depend on how much room they have to move around. If there is lots of space then as long as they are able to get supplies (food / air / water / medicine) they could probably find enough stuff to do. If however it's 15 guys in a 20 x 20 "room" that could get pretty crazy pretty fast.

If it actually takes until Christmas to get these guys out of there it would be interesting to see the psychological effects on them in the end. Could end up being last man standing.

I'm so happy that everyone is alive, and that the rescue teams have a way to communicate and pass goods. This is the most optimistic resolution to a mining accident that I've ever heard about!

I'm relieved that all 33 lived for 17 days without any outside contact. I couldn't imagine being trapped for that long, 700 m underground. But now that they have contact, things are looking pretty great for them. There are MANY instances of people surviving through far worse incidents... POWs or people in concentration camps are the first that come to mind. And these folks (now) have way better food and supplies. Actually, these miners will have an AWESOME story to tell to their grandchildren!

Big ups to the Chilean people for holding out hope for so long, and best wishes to the rescue!

The difference is they know they're getting out (or at least being worked on). The miners who were interviewed who were trapped in the past (3 days, 7 days etc) the hardest part was not knowing - it was like waiting for an execution. Especially since often they are abandoned and cemented off.

I would get a bunch of scientists to observe their behavior as it's a perfect experiment for missions to Mars (which they're also simulating with 2-5 dudes in small rooms for months at a time)

But all it takes is one to snap and go wild with a pickaxe or something -- I definately wouldn't want to be down there. :(

It's a massive amount of tunnels they can access down there.

They are using one tunnel for the bathroom which is further away. They have also been sleeping in different areas to make better use of the oxygen supply.

I'm sure it's far easier for them to cope with than someone from a Western Society.. Just look at some of the conditions in some countries, and it's really not so bad. I'm sure that now they know they're being rescued, there's food/water, and they're getting paid while they're down there (it's probably going to their families as we speak), they feel much better.

I'm sure a lot of them are quite optimistic, far more than I know I could ever be.. I would be the first one to snap, that's for sure.

You'd be surprised what a human can go through.

To help alleviate the mental stress, Chilean officials have sent down Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld gaming device. Each miner will receive the unit along with his daily necessities... In addition to the PSP units, the miners will also receive flashlights, playing cards, MP3 players, speakers, a mini-TV projector, movies, recording of soccer games in addition to bed frames, shampoo, towels and other needed items. A cable to provide electrical power and fiber optic communications may also be dropped down into the mines.

I thought that was super weird too. he gave her a quick 2 second hug, and then went over and started hugging and kissing the president, etc. for like 5 minutes. who knows what kind of relationship they have, but I felt really bad for the wife.

i was tearing up too, more on the first one though, cause the guy's little 4 year old kid was crying etc. it was pretty emotional i thought.

I read it takes 20 minutes to get each one up (roughly), and about an hour for the elevator to do a round trip. Still 30-45 minutes per miner. They're going as quick as they can though...cheering and everything for the guy that just got out. But the engineers are right back at it, sending the mini elevator back down! :)

I dunno, I wouldn't buy too much into the guy who hugged his wife then hugged the rescuers. :dunno: Didn't seem awkward or anything, he'll always have his wife there, but chances are he'll never see the crew who saved his life again.

Don't get me wrong, if I was away from my gf for 3 months i'd be pretty upset, but I'd still want to show how much I appreciated the hard work of the rescuers

He's the one that helped everyone be positive and motivated. How often do you hug your president lol? Never soo he just took advantage ha. But yeah he's my favorite sooo far.
