Yes you can get early JDM WRXs in automatic and turbo form.

According to Wikipedia you can get the GD chassis with a 4 speed automatic as well.

Could be.

*edit* If that's the case and you're able to afford an STI, look at the Evo with the dual clutch auto. It's great.

Youll also need this small accessory: http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=22

Just kidding man, good luck on your search for a new car!

There weren't any sold before 2002 in Canada.

In 2008, they had an automatic or manual WRX with 224 horsepower.

This was obsoleted in 2009 when the model line diverged. Two models existed in Canada:
The WRX265, which had a 265hp motor (thanks to an STI turbo and some other gubbins) and suspension work. Came only in 5-speed manual.
The WRX224/"Impreza GT" which came in manual or 4-speed automatic and was basically the 2008 WRX warmed over with some different equipment.AFAIK after MY2010 only the US still sells the Impreza GT. I think all Canadian 2010+ WRXes are 5-speed manual.

The only 5-speed automatic in Subaru's lineup is the new 2010+ Legacy; prior to that they shared the 4EAT with everything else. I think there's also a CVT design now as well, but I don't keep up on automatics.

My advice to the original poster is to learn to drive stick; it doesn't take that long and it might come in handy one day (say as a designated driver, or driving someone else's car in an emergency).

edit: There's also the inexplicable "WRX STI A-Lines" that keep getting released in Japan; those are STIs with automatic transmissions. I don't think you could import these and I don't think they made an automatic STI prior to MY2010.

You can find 2002-2007 WRXes with automatics. Their resale value is a lot lower as well, because they're rather undesirable to the WRX's target audience. I think about one in six WRXes I found were automatic when I was shopping them.

As much as I like automatics and would prefer an auto STI to a manual at this point, the 4 speed sucks all the fun out of the WRX to the point where I would look for another auto equipped car to buy :dunno:

Forget about the evo subbie debate. If you won't drive a stick I doubt it you will ever see a track. Take the Subbie.

I'm curious.

Why so stuck on a LHD?

I second Legacy GT. .5L extra displacement and an extra gear.

By all accounts, 2002 WRX auto suffers from massive turbo lag.

If you want a turbo subaru auto, get an 02+ WRX w/ auto, an LGT auto, or a Forester XT auto.. They exist. But STi's are 6spd only (except for later jdm models)

Yeah, you're right. I thought I saw an ad for an Auto WRX.

Actually, 05-09 Legacy uses the 5EAT too, not just the '10+, same with the Outback IIRC.

But yea, get an LGT over an auto WRX. They're pretty damn reliable, good transmission until you start really modding it, then the added torque kills it. But if you're keeping it stock, they're damn reliable. I haven't had to do anything other regular maintenance work. Only had my check engine light come on once ever, and that was when the car detected one wheel spinning faster then the other or something during winter. Automatically recalibrates itself after like 10 minutes of driving. Other then that, car has never had anything go wrong with it mechanically. Reasonably quick too.
