i live in CT. i have the title from the orignal owner who lived in newyork.
the orignal owner sold the car to a dealer in new york and the title was
signed over to the dealer.

then anothr guy bought the car from the dealer in newyork using a connecticut bill
of sale form. the dealer and the man never signed the back of the title in the second
open spot. but did sign a bill of sale. the connecticut bill of sale does say this, and i m not sure if this
validates the same as a title as well:

" this can be used as a bill of sale or to assign ownership when the assignement
areas on the back of the title are filled"

the assignment areas on the oringal newyork title were not filled, but can this still be
considered as the title being signed over as well?

then i bought the car off the guy who bought the car off of the dealer and signed the
bill of sales form which says the same " ... assigns ownership when the back of title is filled"...

my question is, so technically is the title in my name? or was i scammed?

i ll try to explain it better. kind of confusing:

i ll try to explain. my car as gone to 4 people in the last month

oringal owner, to dealer, to another guy to me.

orignal owner and dealer signed title and bill of sale

dealer to other guy signed a Connecticut bill of sale only

other guy to me signed connecticut bull of sale only

so the oringal title is last signed by the dealer.

but on the CT bill of sale it says this:
"this form can be used as a bill of sale or to assign ownership when the assignment areas on the back of a title are filled"

does this bill of sales transfer the title to me and proof of purchase? because the guy i bought it from and myself never signed a actual title. so is this car techinically still the dealers?

Since I know a bit about US titles (in certain states), I can help you out.

In most states, only the dealer can fill in the back for a title transfer. Individuals can not do this and doing so wouldn't make the transfer valid. This is to allow simple title transfers from dealer to dealer without additional owners on record (this is how Carfax calculates the # of owners).

For individuals, you basically take the title with all the transfer information, go to your DMV, and when you register your car, they'll take all the paper trail, and issue you a brand new title under your name. This new title is how you prove you own the vehicle. Since there are some individual transfers without a new title issued, you'll most likely have to fill out some sort of a Statement of Fact at the DMV with all the details of the transfers before they issue you a new title.

Hope that helps.

In 3 of the states I lived in, every owner could sign the title. Whoever was selling the car signed the title over to the buyer, along with an optional bill of sale, and that was it. I don't know why you would take the time and ask a car forum from canada, when a 10 minute phone call to your local dmv would give you all your answers.
