Sounds a decent idea IMO.

^^ They showed one on the news last week. It's a silver band, about 3 inches tall with an engraving of the person's name and years (born-death)

Doesn't Edmonton have something like this?

That memorial should be treated no different anyone else's and It is IMHO, one of the largest and most distracting roadside personal memorials in the city while being on one of the city's busiest stretches of roadway.

What is odd is that the same year that Rick died Deerfoot was being resurfaced and one of the workers was run over by a drunk driver.

It hardly made a headline in the newspaper.

I think Cst. Sonnenberg's stayed in the headlines because he was a cop, and the kid who hit him specifically swerved in order to take him out, IIRC.

Also the family has kept up maintenance and initiated the fundraising for the original HAWCs Police Helicopter.

Both deaths are equally as tragic but the nature of Sonnenberg's and his family's activity kept it in the headlines.

The guy was murdered trying to protect your sorry asses and you're worried he might get a special memorial?

God forbid

I don't get how these are distracting to drivers? Do people stare at these flowers or crosses on the side of the road and drive off into the ditch? :dunno:

Deerfoot is a provincial highway and falls under the Department of Highways domain. They ultimately have control over the Sonnenberg memorial, not the city.

I can't believe they're charging the families $200 for one of these.

I know, right?!
It should be at least $400 to cover the unionized labor to install them.

What I honestly don't understand is why people want to memorialize and remember where there loved one was smeared across the highway or crushed to death under a tractor trailer, or beheaded by a car roof....

I just don't get it?

I guess everyone grieves differently. They want a memorial placed there to symbolize that the person isn't forgotten. That one family wants it as a reminder to others that the intersection is "dangerous"....

Personally, I'd rather not have a marker where I died, but maybe at my favorite place while I was alive?
