We were all excited but just how excited were you? Did you have trouble sleeping the night before?

Whats the first thing you did once you got it?

And what was your first car?

I drove around the entire city endlessly for the first week. I never cleaned it or anything cause my first car was brand new from the Honda lot (big mistake, 38K, plus high insurance). It was a Red Honda Prelude 1996. Nice car but no leg space.

My first car was a 74 Ford Maverick. Now, that sounds REALLY old by today's standards, and even though I'm older than most on Beyond, it was old for me too when I bought it. ($400)

It wasn't really what I wanted, but my father used to have one and insisted it was a great car and I should buy it off his gf at the time. I figured, hey... why not. Kinda looks like a classic Camaro. (Kind of.)

Being a completely new driver, I didn't think about the fact that the speedometer was in miles and not in kms. So that was the first thing I learned when 100kph seemed just a little fast on the highways. :)

It wasn't long before I put in a stereo worth about the same amount as the car, and drove around with stereo pumping and "no fear" stickers enblazened on the side windows.

Ended up selling the car in favour of an 81 Supra about 8 months later. Make a profit though; I think I sold it for $900.

But yeah -I drove that thing as much as my gas money would allow. It was a great feeling to have mobility.

I remember my first car...it ran for a day and then the engine seized:(

I do remember my first NEW vehicle, bought it on valentines day in 97 when i was 19, a bright red Ford Ranger splash, i remember not sleeping well at all the first night i owned it, i ended up going out driving it around at 4am!

1998 Ford Escort ZX2. I got it 2 months before I got off class 7. Super stoked, start planning so much for what I wanted to do to it haha. Ended up getting some steelies and winter tires, lowering it 2 inches with new struts and springs, swapped the rear brakes for discs, slotted rotors and Hawk pads all around. Did the rear sway bar. Painted the stock summer wheels gunmetal. Drove it like 30000km the first year or so I had my class 5.

I remember I went through the first set of front tires in 8000km. I was driving to the top of C.O.P. for training most days, and was always flat out on those switchbacks. 130HP seemed pretty little but for a first car that was pretty powerful.

1995 Integra. White with ricer tail lights.

Got that thing and didn't even know how to drive manual but sure learned in the first week. A couple burnouts and stalls later I drove that thing everywhere.

First car was a 86 honda crx, I have restless sleeps all the time being excited to dive it with a new mod. Some people think I'm crazy when I say if I won a lambo I'd drive it for a week and sell it to buy 10 mint rexs for my collection.

'89 Probe GT. White paint with a fugly Burgundy interior. GIDDY when I bought it. It was a quick little car with its factory turbo-ed 2.2L I4. Got it for $1800, by the time I sold it for $200 2 years later everything was shot on it, absolutely everything. It was a heap when I bought it, and not surprisingly everything that was on its way out, went that intended way. Mods? none really, I knew fuck all about cars when I was 16, short of installing my own home-made vibrating/massaging seats, a KILLER stereo and some interesting colored lights.

I bought it from that 16th ave Auto, apparently just months after it was converted from a Chinese food drive through.
Its since changed names several times until it is now known as "16th ave auto". Good times. LOL

88 4 Cylinder mustang 5 speed. Bought it without my dads permission, drove it home and said hey dad like my new car? almost killed me. Worked on it for the winter to find out the car was a total loss and too rusted, Replaced it with a salvage 88 5.0 mustang from my buddys auction. I had a TON of fun with that car. Then I sold it to my buddy who drove it to the ground and had the car stolen from him and stripped. The shell is still sitting in a field.. Wont sell it to me.. probably the biggest mistake I ever made of my life was selling that car.

and like type_s1 couldnt drive stick but definitely learned REALLLLL quick. first day i kept stalling up my driveway (its really steep) had to get my neighbour to pull it in for me...so embarassing.

First car was a 1987 Pontiac Acadian Scooter. Bought it for $1,000 a month before I turned 16, put about $4-$5k worth of stereo equipment into it over the course of my time with it, beat the snot out of it for 3 1/2 yrs, only maintenance was new tires once and oil changes, then sold it (minus the stereo stuff) for $1,500. Best deal I've ever had.

16 years and 35 vehicles later, that's still the longest I've owned any one vehicle.

First car was a 95 Dodge Avenger 5spd with the 420a used in the 2gnt DSM`s. I was pretty happy with it, liked it a hell of a lot more than the Cavalier my old man bought. Started out with basic mods like short ram, Pacesetter header, short shifter, EGR block off, then basically tossed the stock exhaust and had a shop make me a 2 1/2" crush bent exhaust straight off the header with no mufflers which I left on even until I came to Calgary(a few months in Calgary too), put a "aluminum GT wing on" and took it off a month later leaving holes in my trunk that I filled using the mounting bolts of the gay wing with.

Came to Calgary and experimented with the exhaust until it sounded decent, fired up some new 17" black wheels(which I now have for the Sebring), dropped it with Eibachs and KYB AGX, upgraded to the 60mm Jeep TB, did some other stuff then t-boned a guardrail, and off to Pick and Pull it went.

'68 Mustang coupe (yes, I'm old, but the car was old and tired when I bought it-for $200). Over the years I pulled the 302 out and shoehorned in a 351C. Turned the car into a tire smoke machine.

1991 Honda Civic SE hatchback. Black on black, with 16" Enkei CRDR9 rims and a bigass stereo. I beat the hell out of that car.

1987 Fiero GT. I didnt sleep the night before, so exciting haha. Drove it around solid for about a week. Had ALOT of issues with the car, replaced the clutch, all the brakes, had a problem with the pipe that they run from the back to the front for coolant, etc. Ultimately, the timing chain eventually skipped and fucked it all up (2.8 v6 is junk). Sold it to a friend, its been sitting for 11 years. I want it back so i can drop a turbo vg30 in it haha.

^ No dude. You drop either a Northstar V8 or a 3800 Supercharged GTP engine in it.

I've always loved Fieros. I mean, LOVED them. I thought the fastback GTs were just wicked. Shame they were such underpowered POS's. You can swap an engine and make them quick, but you can't make them a good car.

1997 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x2! It was my dads old truck, got it with 98,xxx KMs on it when it was 10 yrs old. Had it a week then got it straight piped right from the manifolds back. That really unleashed the 4.6L power haha. I wish I never sold that truck :(

Not so different from this Volare
http://jalopnik.com/assets/resources/2007/08/76_Volare_Frt_LH_Qtr.jpg

I was excited, but disappointed. Since I knew nothing about cars, I let my dad find one for me, when he left the house he was looking at a Mustang, and came home with a 4 door grampa mobile

First thing I did was my first brake job, also had to fix the gas pedal cable to the carb. It only had am/fm stereo in it, so I rigged up my discman to an old amp and box speakers my dad had from a previous truck.

Drove the shit out of that car, danced on the roof, took it where no non 4x4 should ever go, lol, good times. Then it faithfully drove me to Calgary, where I was quoted $4500 a year to insure it, so sold it for $300, and took the bus for a couple of years.

My first car was a 1990 Camry, two days after I had it I replaced the deck and added a sub, I was in heaven listening to my "dope" system:banghead:, drove the thing to Kelowna for my "first" road trip as a driver, I told myself I was going to drive that car until it died, about a year or so later, I traded it for another toyota. I miss both of them at times, lots of memories good and bad.

'86 jetta karat, bought for $980 + a large pizza. Huge piece of crap, but I didn't know any better at the time... learned how to work on cars with that one. Brakes, struts, hundreds of cracked and breaking wires... drove it 20,000 km in 2 years, then got rid of it for a more reliable pontiac 6000 LE

I had 4 paper routes, and saved up to buy a brand new 89 Honda Civic hatch all on my own, no hand outs from my folks.

Great car, it was before the whole import thing, but i did score some crx rims in 1990, which were very rare at the time, lol Very fun car, it had me hooked onto the older Honda's for a long long time

Only problem i ever had was a cv boot, and that got done under warranty :)

78 Honda Civic. Bought it at T&T Honda in the used lot in 1988.

My Dad and I painted it in the garage before I got to drive it, so I had to be patient for a month before I could drive it. This experience taught me that I never EVER want to do a project with my dad ever again lol.

Anyway, it was looking pretty good when we were done! I rolled around in that car EVERYWHERE. I'd skip class and drive people around town for gas money. Drove it in insane snowstorms, hail and rain, anytime was a good time for a drive..

I couldn't afford tires so I'd go down to Pick-Your-Part and get a new set of slicks out of the tire piles. These slicks would get me through the winter.. I can't believe I never killed myself in that car, it was so completely out of shape all winter long. As an added bonus in the winter, the throttle used to stick wide open whenever it was floored. I got pretty good at driving the car with the throttle pinned.. I'd just use the ignition key as the throttle, and blip the key on and off whenever power was needed. I got some funny looks at lights haha.

The doors would also randomly open going around corners. I had to hold the door closed going around right handers.

I eventually sold the car in 1989 after I punched a hole in the gas tank running over a curb. I could have fixed it easily, but it felt like time to let go. I saw the car about 10 years ago at pick-your-part, and I couldn't believe I was seeing it again, and probably for the last time. I sat in it for a good hour just remembering all the good times I had in it.

I lost my virginity in that car. Man I loved it.

My first car was a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT (4.0L manual) bought in 1998 for $5000.Only had 120,000km on it. I actually still have it and it still runs like a top. Not worth anything to sell but handy having a truck in family so I just keep. Plus, being my first car I'm still somewhat emotionally attached to it lol.

I'm amazed at the differences between "first rides" nowadays compared to when I was a teen (mid 90's). The cheap credit era is really evident looking at the parking lots of today's high schools.

1995 Pontiac Firefly, 3 cylinder. I was stoked to never have to take the bus again, although it was godawfully slow.

When I took my parents 1996 Nissan Maxima out, it felt like a Bugatti Veyron...

I must have watched The Fast and the Furious over 25 times. Of course I had big dreams for it but no desire to work. So it got riced. Motegi MR7's!!! LOL

My first car was a rusty '76 Toyota Corolla liftback purchased for the grand sum of $75. I was 11 years old. It looked like the one below except it was dark green and rust.

http://imcdb.org/images/143/508.jpg

The owner was on my paper route. It was sitting for months in his back yard without any takers. I used to pass by it every day, dreaming about the luxury of car ownership. I spent weeks bugging my dad to teach me how to drive. My father, being a licenced wholesaler at the time said the only way he was going to let me practice was 1) When I turned 15 and 2) When I had come up with the cash to but a car myself. I wasn't getting any handouts from my parents.

So I did what any enterprising kid would do. I saved some of my paper route money for a month and when I had racked up $75 I showed up on the guys doorstep. He seemed desperate to get rid of it and gladly took the money no questions asked. He tossed me the keys and told me to get it out of the yard by the end of the night. My first drive was just about the most painful experience I have ever endured. I had NO driving experience before this point, and I was thoroughly bewildered by the 5-speed manual transmission and the manual choke. I drove it the 10 blocks home taking the back alleyways. It took over 3 gruelling hours.

So I get it home and on the second day I let my 2 brothers and one sister in on my little secret. One of my brothers informs me that I can't drive without a licence and that I need a licence plate. No problem - I take the plate off the front of one of Dad's cars and place it on the rear of mine. My brothers sit with me on one 20 ft drive and stop me. They take the time to FINALLY show me how to drive stick. How I drove it listening to the insane howl of the clutch without crashing into something was a miracle. It took two weeks of constant practice until I was finally comfortable enough to drive properly.

By this time I am so full of myself I start driving it the 6 blocks to school. I start charging my friends $1 for a ride there and $1 back (girls always rode for free - they would usually give a kiss as thanks). I parked on the street facing away from the teacher's lot to avoid detection. At night, my brothers would use my car to practice all sorts of irresponsible stunts (I fastidiously took notes whenever they took the wheel). Every 2 weeks one of my older brothers would gas up the car and charge me $5 to do it. I was in heaven!

It took just over 2 months for my parents to figure it out (just a few weeks shy of my 12th birthday). Needless to say, they were FURIOUS. My dad put the car up for sale immediately. Even my brothers and sister were teary-eyed when "The Green Machine" as it was affectionately called was sold a few days later for $375. The day after Dad sold my car he pulled me aside.

I got all the speeches about driving being a responsibility and not a right, so on and so forth. I respond that I was very responsible with my car. I show him a booklet noting all my passengers and the fees I earned giving them lifts to school. He then proceeds to lose it on the spot. He takes the booklet away from me and grounds me for a month.

A month rolls around and he pulls me aside again. We drive down to the local Canada Trust and we open up a bank account. He deposits $300 and hands me $75. He proceeds to ask me if I could find another car for that cheap. I tell him no problem. Three weeks later I stumble on a 78,000 mile '73 Toyota Corolla with the 2 speed "Toyoglide" transmission for $50. He then began to slowly teach me about how to run a car business like his. Every time I found a car he would sell it through his business, deposit the profit in my account and give me back $75 for the next purchase. I picked up more business sense as a kid working with my father than most other people have at 25. And it didn't even seem like work either.

I kept that Corolla for years before finally selling it to Jack Heninger. Man do I miss those days.........

Not sure what year you turned 16 but when I did, my 96 was already a 7 year old car. I also worked my ass off to afford it. I worked summers on the family farm in sask, then at 14 got my learners and joined the scooter gang in the suburbs I grew up in where I flipped, repaired, rebuilt, and salvaged scooters as a part time hustle. by the time I turned 16 I had owned around 30 scooters and worked on many more. 15 I got a job working at sport mart hustling sneakers for commission and pinched pennies. I didn't get my talon on my 16th b-day, i got it about 1/2 way to 17. 4 years of penny pinching should get anybody the $8,000 i needed to buy my talon

First car was a 1990 Mustang 5.0L Lx. Guy was asking $6500 for it, but got him down to $5000, then an extra $100 off cause I had to drive back to Calgary (Bought the Car in Edmonton)

I slept fine the night before but the next couple night's I didn't get much sleep.

I bought the car in the middle of winter  and it had Cheater slicks on the back. So the first little while was just trips around the block/community until I picked up some winter tires.

Greatest feeling in the world though, buying my first car, made all the hours of work completely worth it.

I had alot of friends who's parent's bought them their first (sometimes second and third) cars, but the pride I had from buying it myself was just amazing.

Quite possibly the worst day of my life when I totalled it

1997 Acura 1.6 EL with Leather seats, low KMs etc. Kept it clean, washed it as often as possible, interior was spotless. Sold for $5000, pretty much gave it away. Regret it every day. :(

My first car I bought in 99 was a 1989 Lincoln Continental Signature Series. I thought it was sooooo cool because it was my mob ride and it lowered when you turned it off. Had good times in it, but when it spun a rod I said fuck it to fixing it and bought a 96 Maxima 5 speed then another Maxima(favorite car so far).

Exact same as mine

1st car was a 198? ford fairmont futura.

got it at 13 cleaned it up real nice and *fixed* the exterior
too bad i couldn't get it running at 13 i knew nothing about fixing it so i got rid of it a while later. i regret it now since i have never seen one on the road.

the 1st car i actually had on the road would be a 1992 mercury grandmarquis. big land yacht that was 500$ and 500k on the odo. had it for a few months and then it failed safety inspection with flying colors. too bad i know now the mechanic was bs me. told me the drive shaft was unsafe... and would cost 1000$ to replace.

1991 Mazda Protoge.

Definitely could not sleep the night before. when I got it I spent hours cleaning the whole thing, installed subs, a deck and bought air fresheners, sunglass holder, filled the ashtray with change, made it completely my own.

After that I used anything as an excuse to drive, gave everyone rides.

Never had a single problem with it the whole time I had it and still ended up making $250 when I sold it.

Lost my license for speeding...Going ten over on the highway with my parents car...(was my second ticket and that was it) then saved and with help from my parents got a 1988 rx7. Red, second owner, always kept under a car cover in the garage and only driven in the summer.

Still smelled new when I got it. Rims were perfect, paint perfect, interior flawless.

I had to let it sit in my driveway for 3 months before I got my license back and then when I got it, it was a feeling of utter joy. That car drives like nothing else I've driven so far. Rotary engine just screams all the way up to it's redline...Sunroof open, windows open, cruising by the beach at night with the smell of the ocean in the air was pure automotive bliss.

I miss it so much I am currently saving tiny bits of money here and there into a specific account to buy another one but in turbo II trim within the next few years...

I will even go down to the states to get a clean FC if I have too.

I want to pick up another 80's Celica one of these days. I miss her a lot. She lasted 3 months until the rear end rusted out. I drove it way too hard and killed the rear. It was so rusty I couldnt fix it :(

98 Integra GS

It was reliable, but I learned very fast that if I wanted a fast car, I really had to get a different car.

90 Integra RS.. Bought it for $300 with a dead engine(con-rod sticking out the block) at Regal. It got towed through the auction ring. Swapped out the engine with a another one($600~), Repainted the whole thing cherry red.

After i got it running, everyday i got home from school, i would start her up an go for a drive around the block only in the back alleys because i didn't have the money to insure it. LOL

How many you guys still have your first car? I do, it the car in my advatar, 1966 Merc Comet, that I have owned for 23 years. I lost my DL twice in high school with it, raced it for years. Its apart right now to be updated with a little more modern driveline, so it will be faster and more drivable.

1987 Honda Accord Hatchback.. Manual, no power anything, not even steering, sucked in parking lots if you weren't moving very quick.

My first car was a 1963 Mini Cooper in racing green (well 70% was green) it was over 25 years old when I bought it for 300 pounds, My mother made me save 10 pound every pay cheque for a year, not much but my pay at the time was 27 pound and had to take 10 pound board out of that.

First thing I did was put in a radio/cassette, couldn't drive my buddies around listening to a AM radio. The starter motor would occasionally not start and my dad showed me how to get it to start by rocking the car from side to side. Eventually I painted the rest of the car to match and put it up for sale outside my parents house on a Sunday morning by 1pm the same day it was sold for 350 pounds.

My first car was a 19995 Eagle Talon ESi, manual fwd 140bhp. Just enough to get a first time driver in trouble.

Put a crazy sound system in it and a rice can.

Drove it probably a total of 20,000 before I sold it for a piece of shit winter car while I set my eyes on a JDM Mr2.

First car was a 94 Eagle Talon ES (Non-Turbo FWD) because I didn't know any better :banghead:

Nonetheless I loved the piss out of that car. I got it when I was 16, I paid for half and my parents paid the other half. The car cost 5000 and those were the good old days when a 17 year old male driving a sporty car even with a clean record was paying 4000 /year on insurance. It sat on my driveway for a couple weeks as I wasn't given the keys to it until my 17th birthday. So for those two or so painful and agonizing weeks I gave it the most thorough and detailed clean imaginable, changed all the fluids (I even went as far as siphoning out the old windshield washer fluid  ), rotated the tires, waxed it 16 times.....

Then the day finally came when I was given the keys I must of put a few hundred kilometers on the car in the first day, I was so excited, gave all of my friends a ride, a 150hp in a first car was still quite fun especially in a light car (2850lbs) I enjoyed racing Civic's and putting a car or two on them in a red light to red light battle put the biggest smile on my face ever, don't be hypocrites we all did it.

Wasn't long before the mod bug bit me and I tinkered around with Home Depot Special custom made intakes to make an extra 2 horsepower or so. Then I started to get serious and began researching a turbo swap into my car and after about 6 months of research I got lucky when the Cam Angle Sensor went on my motor and it was going to set me back $1200 to fix it (couldn't find a used one) and a new 4G63-Turbo motor was only a few hundred more..................

1994 Mazda MX-6 LS(~2500lbs)
KL-ZE engine swap (~200hp) with intake, headers, exhaust.
Tokico Illumina Struts with Ground Control coilovers.
13lb FD (3rd gen rx7) rims with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

That car was a LOT of fun.

My first was an old 1995 Saturn SL I picked up a month after I got my license. Was a dog but stayed with me for like 5 years until my parents randomly gave it away to my cousin when I was out of the country on internship... Who gave it to his pothead friend... Who didn't register it and then abandoned it on the side of the highway.

that's what I'm currently driving, they are so fun to drift. Mine has ~80xxxk on the engine and 200xxx on the body.

I wasn't super excited when I got it, but I was very happy to not have to take the bus. I went through and did all the maintenance on it. Brakes, shocks, lights, fluids, etc. Did an engine and tranny swap in the summer. Once its warm and dry out again I will install a stereo since we cant move the cars in our garage right now. Going to buy something new in the summer and start modding the car. You can fit a 383 in one with very little cutting =D
