Okay, call me misinformed but I thought it was perfectly legal to stop at an intersection, and then proceed from the leftmost lane to the leftmost lane from a one way street to a one way street.

From what I'm seeing online this seems to be accurate, but that doesn't explain why I got a red light camera ticket for it.

Should I fight this? Have I any ground to stand on here at all?

This seems completely ridiculous.

What!?

That's very sneaky if you ask me.

Were you at a complete stop before rolling in? I know for a fact that it is perfectly legal, it should be in the learners manual.

You should be able to do that.

Some 1-ways to 1-ways have DO NOT TURN LEFT ON RED signs though. Just revisit the site of offense and review that you have everything in check. After you do that, then fight it. Take pictures of the intersection as well for your case.

You probably didn't stop long enough. Aren't the photos timestamped?

The sensors cannot differentiate between someone turning and someone going straight through the red. Is it clear you are turning in the picture?

I'd imagine they wouldn't put a red light camera at an intersection where it was legal to turn on a red. That would be a waste of their and your time. Which intersection is it? There are several throughout the city that have signs saying no turn on red. I'd go back to the intersection and make sure there was no sign before wasting your time going to the courts to fight it.

It should have been ok to do so... unless...

1. you did a rolling stop and then turned.
2. you were trying to beat the yellow but then turned red while turning.
3. or you turned when it the signs says no turns on red.

which intersection?

You can also dual or triple turn (signage permitting) from a one-way onto a one-way.

It's annoying being stuck behind someone that doesn't know this at a red light.

Turning at the red is legal in that situation. Maybe you pulled a rolling stop without really noticing. Almost everyone, technically, pulls a rolling stop when turning at a red if there is no traffic. Another one of those things that a camera ticketed you for when an actual cop would have been "meh" and not ticketed you. Money money.

Just last week I saw a car making a left hand turn from Heritage Drive east-bound onto north-bound Elbow Drive and the camera facing north on Elbow snapped him...

I would imagine you'll be able to fight the ticket quite easily. I've seen numerous (other) "mistakes" made by the cameras and would think that they're common enough that there's a standard procedure for having false tickets thrown out.

All photo tickets are reviewed before the actual ticket is issued. If it was a legitimate turn then I bet you'll never see it in the mail.

A lot of intersections do have signs prohibiting left turns on reds though. Did you miss the sign by chance? What intersection was it?

LOL...I remember one of the first times I came to THIS (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Calgary,+Alberta&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=26.396618,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Calgary,+Division+No.+6,+Alberta&ll=50.988807,-114.051025&spn=0.00314,0.009645&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=50.988361,-114.052874&panoid=07fFL-kLDE0tAwdVHIcr_A&cbp=12,277.37,,0,6.3) intersection. Truck was in front of me sitting at the red waiting to turn right, but it was hiding the sign. There's no traffic on northbound Blackfoot and I'm leaning on the horn telling him to "GET GOING". Only when it turned green and we proceeded did I notice the "no turn on red" sign. Yeah...felt pretty cool THEN! lol
