Here's my excuse :) I'm the PM for my 4th year project, so balancing it and FSAE will be tough...how the old team (and basically the new team) does it I don't know, but they are mechies and not in Zoo, could be different (4th year project wise)

As a first year, all depends on how much you participate - you can expect to do some basic fabrication, assembling parts, lots o' fun stuff. Two of my buddies and I were responsible for wiring the FSAE2009 car, and I created a simple LED tach circuit.

That was me that you talked to just before stepping out, asking if you were going to miss anything important.

You didn't. We finished up Sandy's lecture and did some work on the vehicle, however everyone without tool training got to watch. We might be around the shop again on Sunday, as most of the leads will be at the Maier conference all day on Saturday.

Was it set up like a normal lecture? Casswell grouped our lectures into 1 3 hour block and he doesn't do anything. He gives us time to work on group projects. We have wasted ten hours of lecture on nothing. We had a tutorial today and some ta just sat there righting stuff on the board for 2 hours and didn't even tell us what the questions were I'm wondering how we can have quizzes and tests if we never have lectures? I'm hoping he is an easy marker

Anybody wanna help me out with AMAT 307?

y1 and y2 are solutions of 49y''-28y'-77y=0
where y1(0)=1,y1'(0)=0

So for you guys past 1st year, any recommendations on picking what field to go into for 2nd year (software, mech, civil etc.).

Right now I have no idea what to go into.
I know I should go into the one that interests me most, but right now I don't favor any one course over the other. Granted it's only been 2 months, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking about it.

So I'd like to know why you chose your specific area of engineering. If you could pick again, would you choose another area? (be honest)

i'm in mech, and it's not a bad choice, but i think i'd go into civil or chem just because of the cohesion within the faculty. i can't speak for everyone else in mech, but i feel there is nothing that brings us together and we barely have decent events.

it's not a huge reason to go into those fields, but it definitely makes the school experience more enjoyable.

What I hate is that my year of ENGG407 has no MATLAB. The years before us had MATLAB, and the year after us (you guys) have MATLAB now too. We did numerical methods by HAND. Wtf is that shit? It was easy, but totally useless.

And now most of us learned MATLAB during our off-class time because we were not exposed to any MATLAB introduction ever. I'm serious, I think 70% of people in my classes barely know MATLAB, and we're supposedly 4th year students. How sad.

What's your discipline? For a lot of people, Matlab isn't relevant at all, I couldn't give a shit about learning it. Regardless, you have to learn Matlab on the side for that course anyways.

^^ Electrical Engineering. Pretty important and useful no matter what you are doing. Even if you are just doing Power and staying away from software, MATLAB has its uses in many aspects.

And no, I did not need to learn MATLAB on the side in that course. Never needed it in the course when it was done by hand. I never even knew what MATLAB was in 3rd year until 2nd semester where I had ENEL441 which dealt with Controls Systems. That's where I started learning on my own.

Can you believe it? Electrical Engineer and did not even get to use MATLAB until 2nd semester, 3 years into study. LOL, U of C at its finest.

For someone in electrical engineering maybe. For someone like me in Oil & Gas, it's nowhere near as relevant. The issue with the course is that it's taken by all degree streams, so they need to keep it general. Sounds like what they need is a course for you guys where they teach Matlab, not making 407 a vehicle to make the electrical people happy because they've been taught Matlab.

Then need an ENEL course for that, not a common ENGG course. I don't think you'd get a proper understanding of Matlab by teaching it to yourself to do the ENGG 407 assignments.

And no, I did not need to learn MATLAB on the side in that course. Never needed it in the course when it was done by hand. I never even knew what MATLAB was in 3rd year until 2nd semester where I had ENEL441 which dealt with Controls Systems. That's where I started learning on my own.

I meant that Matlab isn't taught in 407 (this year) despite the fact that the labs use it, you're more or less left to teach it to yourself, with some limited support by way of examples on Blackboard. All the labs do is force you to teach it to yourself on your own time.

Haha, met Sanjay the other day.

He showed me and my buds, (we usually sit in ICT), some pictures of when he got arrested for sniffing cocaine in class.

Is this true?!
How old is this guy anyways?

^^ Probably. The guy knows me well. He's just an attention whore. He has Asperger's syndrome I believe.

Reminds me of the time he came out of ICT washroom with a hooker

what does his brother being relatively normal have anything to do with how sanjay is still in engg let alone school/ not in jail or asylum...?

Software.

But hey, it's taken him 6-7 years and he was fucking around throughout. In his mind, he has had the time of his life. Think of the people who literally try SO hard and either end up dropping out because they couldn't handle it or is struggling to get their degree because of probation or failed classes.

So does that mean those people are even dumber than Sanjay? :nut:

He does have potential, he's just an obnoxious person most of the time and loves to put his focus on other things/people.

knew he was zoo... just guessed elec

I guess we each have different memories/encounters with him. I was there when he got kicked out of 253 for being drunk (and somewhat sexually assaulting that girl), and thought at that point alone he should have been kicked out of school.

But my fondest memory was last year while I was working on my enme 493 project he came up to me and my group drunk and started harassing me specifically.
He then said, good luck trying to pass 1st year, come find me when you do?

My response was, actually I'm 3rd year mech but thanks for the support, btw haven't you been here for 5 or 6 years already? (this really set him off)

In which he went on a rant about "do you know how much money my parents donate to this university, you should be thanking me for the things there money provides bla bla" at which point he got up in my face and started getting threatening, saying that I was "lucky" i'm on school boundaries... at which point I stood up out of my chair cause well... thats bullshit that he thinks he can walk around and talk to people like that...

he quickly backed off and said "i'm gonna find you tmr when i'm sober and we're gonna have a long talk about showing respect to others, i'm driving home now" I congratulated him on driving intoxicated and this set him off the wall, paranoid if i was going to call the cops on him. he finally quickly left...

but those are just many of the lovely times i've spent in his presence... he's a foul human being who does not deserve to graduate, but it would greatly surprise me if he obtained a job given everything that he is. I just think its unfair that the student body should be subjected to his consistent harassment and inappropriate behavior, he was always trying to show people pictures of him with hookers back in india or w/e he was ranting about...

but thats enough of my stupid stories about the guy, i'm just glad I barely ever see him anymore

maybe I should reword what I said. he isn't the dumbass people make him out to be, he just messes around and is into some really hard drugs. I had a huge argument with him because he said some ridiculously propaganda about Islam and it showed that he wasnt some burnout just hanging out in engg but a guy who could fully understand what's going on

BerserkerCatSplat

No, he's a slimy half-retarded burnout who should have been thrown out YEARS ago. I remember when one of the scavenger hunt items was a frosh transcript with the lowest GPA - Zoo brought his and won by a mile, I think it was below 1.0. He's a disgrace. And don't give me stuff about how "smart" he is, he's tried debating topics with various people at the Grad Lounge (Philosophy profs, for example) and his ability to grasp absolutely nothing about the topic at hand is staggering.

If I never have to see his lumpen, sweaty face again I will be a happy man.

you people realize he's definitely got a mental disability right?

like, yeah his parents are loaded, but they don't know what to do with their kid who has Aspergers so they just throw money at him/the school.

Pretty bad parenting but it's not the kids fault he was brought up like this.

Give him a break and just ignore him.

I was surprised there were so many groups listed in the email. Almost like half the class, 11 teams.
