Rights after accident?

Can anyone throw any light on this for me, please?

In Alberta, when involved in an accident and the vehicle is towed, do the police have the "right" to search the vehicle/contents of bags in vehicle or remove anything from the vehicle?

Just found out everything has been recovered from the vehicle by the owner, but the case of beer that was in there has strangely "disappeared" :rolleyes:

or maybe owner of vehicle got thirsty, had some drinks then ended up in an accident?

Maybe that is just their standard operation procedure and might be thinking that the driver is drunk or drugged which causes the accident.
