At least they didn't have to perform some ethnic cleansing and send in the military to keep their "people" in line. I rather have the games in India any day of the week if the alternative is hosting it in China where people just vanish. You might end up dirty but at least you don't end up with full blown military slaughters of the locals.

Do they let squatters use the washrooms or something? :nut:

They should just cancel them at this point. If the athletes don't die of some disease, they will likely be shot at by Islamic terrorists.

different hygiene beliefs too

good written piece on india standards

i wonder how indians adjust when come to west and visit. must do things in western way. possible this is bigger adjustment for them here, then westerners in india.

So shitting all over the shower, sink, and floor is normal? Theres no standards.. never mind different standards.

Its not just the filth either, its the shoddy construction and unsafe buildings. Not to mention the Islamic extremists running a muck.

Corruption at its finest. Greed is good capitalism gone horribly wrong - when it affects construction to the point of public safety.

Almost like Montreal.

Montreal Olympic stadium dropped that 55 ton piece of concrete onto the pedestrian walkway 15 years after it was built.

Standards are a lot different in different places though. In the middle east, everything is covered with a light layer of sand. Its almost as inevitable as mushy potato chips when living in Newfieland.

Movie Spoiler alert: Slumdog millionaire, where the protagonist jumps into an open pit sewer to get a signed autograph that he later sells for two bits

A billion people create a lot of shit. It also creates a lot of smell. Even in relatively low density New York - its a noticable odor.

No need to worry, the bridge was for public pedestrians and not for the atheletes

I'm not surprised by any of these photo's. This is how indians live, even in calgary, this is completly normal for them. how do I know? cause I used to work as an indoor clear air inspector back in the day while I was going to university, and I would go and inspect homes in calgary, and everytime I went into indians home's I would see shit like this (90% of the time).... I remember one time, I went into this one home in the NE (go figure) and puked shortly after entering because of how fucking gross it smelled in there, you can just imagine what it looked like.

and yes all the homes were being lived in... sometimes I would go into the furnice rooms, where there would be 2 - 4 people living, sleeping in there because the houses were so over crowded.

It is very easy to badmouth something. I do believe Indians need some treatment like Chinese where government needs to tell people to be right or get runned under a tank. But India is more about freedom. It is different in living. Here people focus more on standard of life. Indians focus more on the way of life. If you ever open your mind and try to feel the lifestyle in India you'll experience a lot of fun. Especially Post-secondary years. Sure there might be things that bother you or others. But there are many things in any culture that others may find unsuitable. You keep doing what you like!!! Have fun!!

I do not know who started this thread but the only time you compare yourself with others is when you feel threatned by them. So I am glad you're taking India seriously and would try anything to damage its reputation. But have some respect. You're just born into a country/region/religion. It's great if you try to highlight how great your nation is but defaming others only leads to more and more arguments. That is the problem with Muslim extremists too!! They think everybody other than Muslims are wrong. And seeing how many people hammer muslim extremists here, think about it..... You're no different.

In Vancouver they were mocking us for 'Own the Podium' and that the torch looked ugly behind a chain link fence. The issue that the athlete's village was in such a (literally) shitty state that the thought of cancelling the games altogether was a possibility, never came up; a handful of prominent athletes have already backed out citing safety and countries game committees have delayed the departures of their athletes.

Thank you. Obviously some of these other posters lead sheltered lives.

Of course there are differences in culture way of life etc. However they must realize many of the athletes are coming from modern western nations and would expect more than feces covered beds and bathrooms. You would think anyway. Regardless of how the media may be spinning this, there are legitimate concerns.

Such bullsh!t generalization. I know many Indians and what you describe is not the "norm" as you make it out. I'm sure you would badmouth anyone whose house does not smell like mcdonalds.

You pick out one bad example and badmouth a whole ethnicity. Most of these Indians you are talking about will get further in life than you ever will.

The bad photos are taken when delegates start showing up about a week or 2 ago and heading into the village for the 1st time. The 2nd pics are after the bad press and the PMO took over and get shit fixed over the days that follows.

Village is still not in the state of able to move in yet. British athlete just showed up but living in hotels for now until at least most of the village is 100%.

More problems at the athletes' village, where construction and sanitation threatened to derail the Games. This time it's condom-plugged toilets. The Mail Today tabloid's Thursday front page headline screamed "It's a rubbery problem at the CWG village."

"I hope they clean the toilets," Fennell said. "If that is happening, it shows there is use of condoms and that is a very positive story."

DELHI belly has claimed two high-profile victims in the Australian swimming team, as sickness also cuts a swathe through British competitors.

Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti said the trio, who he did not name, were being monitored in the Village to see if their conditions deteriorated further.

Their conditions have been upgraded from mild stomach illness to the debilitating sickness of gastroenteritis.

Probably ate the salad. On the brighter side, Canada wins gold because of this.

Athletic events are always good for condom sales.

Right now, on the other side of the world some Slumdog kid is living the dream.

It would figure that India would use this opportunity to bring up the fact that a great deal of the British Crown Jewels are in fact - stolen and/or thefted from India by the many wars over the centuries.

The best part of this whole thread is the article posted by Rob where a Delhi Olympic Spokesperson official is defending the poor hygiene of the majority population. Then the beyond.ca feel good crew shows up with a flurry of links to try and dispel the stereotype. Well, that's great and I'm happy you've had a shower. Could you please spread the word? Austrailian swimmers seem to be complaining the most, and running the toilet the most.

Figures... They live in a climate where the UV index of up to 17 outdoors naturally kills not just bacteria, but fully grown animals with legs (not kidding)

This would make a great study on human tolerances, even ones that are supposedly in the peak of human condition. In India and that extreme high density population, levels of contaminants (especially bacterial) are a part of life.

Athletes were all forewarned.
