So am buying an old beater for the first time. What hoops do you have to jump through to get a car on the road that I buy through a private sale? Haven't a clue how it works here.

Insurance inspection, really it is up to them how hard they want to make it. If the car has previously been registered and is not salvage then the process with the registry is pretty simple.

Best bet is to call your insurance company (if you have one), or while you are shopping around for one ask them what their procedure is.

Make sure its not an out of province car - not worth the grief on a beater.

Do you still need an inspection if it's less than 10 years old?

Only if it is an out of province car.

You need an inspection if it is older than 10 years, or if it is coming in from another province.

^ depending on the insurance company. Some are 12 years, and some seem not to care.
