For those of you who work full time, how many paid holiday days do you guys get per year, not including stat holidays, and how long have you been working at your current company for?

IF i were an employee here, i'd get 2 weeks, plus a bonus week at christmas..

Mitsu3000gt

3 weeks base + Christmas week + half day every Friday in the summer off (May 1 through Sept long weekend) + about 30 additional days for being "on call" every weekend (checking gas accounts in the mornings on Sat & Sun, I don't even need to leave my bed). If I don't use all my holidays I get paid for them. Works out to about 11 weeks/year.

Only been with my current company for 3 months (changed companies) and have 2 weeks vacation but will be up to 3 once my 1 year mark rolls by. I also get to bank all my hours for time off. Thus far in the last 3 months, I've banked about 5 days worth of time off, so if this same trend follows, I guess I will get be getting ~6 weeks off this year and ~7 weeks come a year's time?

4 weeks vacation (just bumped up this year, 5 years experience, only 3 of which at this company) + 2 flex days a month + banked overtime (can get it paid out but prefer time off) + 1 floater per year.

Last year all this added up to 7 weeks, this year I already went on 4 weeks worth of vacations, got 2 more weeks during christmas and about another 4 worth of flex days and banked overtime....man i didn't realize that I get so much time off until I just wrote it out, crazy!

Three weeks base vacation, 12 flex days, 12 stat holidays, we have flexible benefits, so i can buy up to 10 days extra vacation.
Get banked time for time on-call or in the field on the weekend, so that's usualyl another 10 days or so a year.

This year it all added up to 45 days plus the 12 stats.

I get to 4 weeks base vacation at 10 years expereince, and I'm a feww years from that.

I get 3 weeks in Canada. But talking to people from other countries like France, Australia, Switzerland... they get minimum 4 weeks to start. Most of them have 6 weeks vacation on avg.

France is the best place to work. Minimum 2 months vacations per year. Plus if a public holiday falls mid-week (eg wednesday), they'll get thursday, friday and the weekend off automatically.

makes me think we work too hard in n. america. it's sad to think we just think 2 weeks vacation per year is okay. most of us are in the 3 weeks bracket.... which is still pretty sad compared to the rest of the world :(

Really? Some of you guys don't want more holiday?

I get roughly 11 weeks of holiday and I would love to have twice as much, even 3 times as much. I can think of a billion things I'd rather be doing than working all day, and I like my job.

Also I believe it's been proven that people are more productive with shorter work days. I think it is Spain that has a higher per capita GDP than anywhere in North America and they work WAY less than what the norm is over here.

Nope, but I monitor the company gas account on the weekend (Read: check it from bed with my iPhone and go back to sleep 1 minute later assuming I did my job properly on Friday) and I get holiday in lieu every time I do that. Nobody else in the company wants to do that, so I get to do it every single weekend. In addition to that I get 3 weeks base, a week at Christmas, and half day every Friday from May 1 through Sept long weekend. Over the course of a year my time off works out to roughly 11 weeks, including my half day Fridays which works out to about a week of that. I don't work any extra hours in a regular day for these perks either.

I should add I can't just take off for a month at a time or anything, and I probably won't use all my holiday in any given year, but I would get paid for what I don't use.

That is correct my base technically is 3 weeks + Christmas + the half day Fridays from May-Sep but really considering I do nothing and get another ~30 days of holiday per year, it might as well be added onto my base. It's not like some of the other people here who work an extra hour every day to get every other Friday off or whatever.

You're right about the Stampede, even if you're in the office it's basically a week of holiday.

Start with 2 weeks
3 weeks after 5 years
4 weeks after 10 years
an extra week for management

No official flex days, but if it's a slow day, and someone wants it off, we'll usually let them (with pay).

Depending on my boss's ever fluctuating mood (he's fucking nuts), he might not submit a week of your vacation time or not, so in effect you get an extra week. This has only happened to me twice in 8 years, but his little bootlicker gets this treatment every year.

I have a question for all the people that get three to five weeks vacation a year but make $45,000 - $75,000.

By 30k? yes. When we get our raises we are offered cash or vacation for it so I usually take the cash because I have 3 weeks now (plus bank time). If they offered me 1 week less for 15k I would live at the office.

Is there even more than 1 answer to this question? For an extra $30K? That is a boost of 40-67%!!!

Losing a week of vacation or time off only equates to 2%!!!!

The real question would be if they would lose a week or two of vacation AND get butt-fucked everyday by the 300lb dude on top for a $30K raise!

I get 3 weeks paid vacation, 3 months of paid sick days, all stat holidays, but if they are worked on I get triple time, and can bank it all.

I usually work 40 hours a week (4 tens, or 3 tens and 1 nine), but technically have to have 79 hours on my pay cheque as I am classified as a "part time" worker. I consider myself to be full time though lol.

I have been permanent employee since April I think, but have been with the City of Ed since '07. We have insanely good benefits, its really ridiculous.

For my first year, I get 2 weeks plus an additional 12 days off for coming in 15 minutes early and leaving 15 minutes later each day (which I get paid for). So I essentially get very close to 4 weeks of paid vacation right off the bat. I believe this will go up to 5 weeks after my first year. AND, I can take it off whenever I want unless we have a business trip somewhere (like Fort Mac). If I want, I can not come in on any given day (obviously a call in is nice) and just write it off as a used holiday.

Not bad, but clearly not as nice as some people have it. Of course, the job is relatively low stress so far with amazing benefits and a good bump of overtime whenever we travel :D

I have to say I'm surprised by the amount of time off lots of people have access to. I don't know what I would do with four or five weeks off a year. I seem to spend A LOT of money while I'm on vacation too.

Am I correct in assuming that most of the people on here who have more than three or four weeks time off are paid a flat salary versus commission?

I figured it would be fairly similar for the core type benefits (ie: 100% medical/dental, LTD, etc) but I always wondered if the city workers get the more "perk" type benefits that you see in open industry (fitness spending account, childcare, concierge service, etc)

I suppose being union that the pension would be the best benefit compared to open market hey?

Yeah they always pull the BS that they are 'fair market' but really the benefits are the same and pay always a little less. No bonuses. Pay is always average. You USED to get a defined benefit (DB) pension. That means that you get 60% of your best 5 years for life once you qualify to retire. That was always the best perk. However now you get defined contribution (DC) which means that you get xyz% of your total pay put into a sunlife financial account and you retire when you can. Same as most big companies now.

Fitness spending, yes, but so were all the other places I have worked.
Concierge, no, maybe for the execs but not for everyone.
Child care, no.

Thing that sucked is that you had to worry about everything perception. One guy who worked for us was an engineer and his wife was a heart surgeon. They made good money and he had a Porsche and Merc SL something. He got pulled in by the bosses one day and was told he either had to park his car around back or wasnt allowed to drive it anymore. They were afraid someone would complain that Hydro employees made too much money. We bought dodge ram trucks for everyone (company use) and they paid $1000.00 EXTRA to have the power windows and power door locks removed because they didnt want to seem flashy. They wasted money to appear cheap. :nut:

That was a big reason for me to return to working at a contractor.

Well, the 3 months sick pay is nice, anything longer is long term disability think. 500$/ year health spending account, 100% dental, bereavement pay, pension plan, life insurance (if I die 2 years wages go to whomever I leave it to... I think its 2 years, maybe 1), major medical stuff. Although, this stuff isn't free medical: 8.11, LTD: 44.23, Dental: 8.43, and life: 2.43 (All per month).

I would say I get paid above average for the job I do (Unskilled laborer/ glorified cashier), ~25 an hour, extra 1.50/hr on weekends, and ~28 as forman (which on most days means you do a whole lot of nothing).

Thanks for breaking it down, I was always curious about how everything stacked up.

Just starting with a new company.

2 weeks vacation + additional 5 days if vacation is taken during non peak periods + 10 personal days.

So all you guys with these "personal" days, what's the difference between a personal day & a vacation day?

Personal days here are for things like dentist appointments, getting your car fixed, having to be at home for something, etc.

We actually had 15 personal days until a year or two ago (so I am told) that were taken away due to abuse. :dunno:

Where I worked and had ERD days (earned rest days) it was more meant for a one off day. You werent supposed to take 2 weeks of ERD off and you werent supposed to use 1 day of vacation to extend a weekend or something.

Also we had 12 ERD days and you were supposed to use them in the month they were earned.
