VANCOUVER — North Vancouver police have impounded a pair of hot wheels — a BMW and a $400,000 Ferrari — last weekend when officers pulled over two drivers clocked at about 200 km/h.

The Vancouver men, 21 and 22, were stopped by North Vancouver RCMP Saturday when officers spotted them racing on a road popular among hikers, outdoor enthusiasts and families.

Several motorists called in a dangerous driving complaints at 10:45 a.m. Moments later, the officer was stunned to see a sky blue Ferrari Scuderia streak past him, pursued closely by a BMW.

They were forced to slow down as they approached a parking lot, allowing police to catch up.

"They were penalized under the street-racing laws," said Cpl. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the detachment. "I think we probably saved their lives, if nothing else."

Both men were handed close to $1,000 in fines and automatically lost their licences and vehicles for seven days. The man driving the Ferrari had been behind the wheel of the supercar — valued at $400,000 — for only a day before watching it loaded onto the back of the impound truck.

So they never get their car back? They probably will face fines and will be good to go... $1,000 ticket and a 7 day suspension not bad especially if the guy has a $400,000 vehicle. it will seem like a car wash for his car

How is that considered punishment? These "kids" will just laugh it off. Its like an average 21yr old in his $4,000 civic, getting fined $10 and a time out. Lesson not learned. I though BC fines were ridiculous. Maybe it meant to say $10,000

Articles like this need to name names, useless without the social stigma Abbot and Costello would face had their names been released to the public. I am hoping the secured impound lot has a key or two they can run down the side of these cars, a treat to do it myself. Last car I had towed for a parking violation in Calgary, both of my mirrors were damaged, replacement was $500 out of my pocket.

sweet looking car but 200kph on a "popular" road should get more than a 1000$ fine.

obviously if he can afford a 400k car he can afford a lawyer to get him the car back, they cant destroy the car or impound it forever....

The article is so full of crap. But I guess that's usual for a non-story :drama:

- The speeds were never clocked, only estimated by other civilian motorists.

- The car is an 08 Scuderia. Maybe, with the right options, and ALL taxes, it could've been $400k when new. However, this car was recently bought used for significantly less.

- The owner has had the car for longer than 1 day. Not a lot longer, but hey, saying "one day" sure makes it a better story, right?

- He'll get the car back, but it's unlikely he'll be keeping it due to the insane ICBC insurance he'll be looking at.

I cannot stand idiots like this and in no way condone these speeds on public roads. I believe the driver should be fined significantly more and lose his license for a while.

I also cannot stand out right lying in "news" stories where the author (don't care to call him a journalist) is too lazy to do any fact checking and just embellishes minor details to make his non-story remotely interesting.

:thumbsdow For driving like that, but chances are if we all owned a Ferrari the vast majority of us at one point or another would hit 200km/h (atleast) on a public road

Oh and wow that car looks

I wonder if everyones high horse will go that fast?

Sure doing it on a busy road is pretty stupid but I seriously doubt anyone in here can claim that they have never hit 200 km/h.

Here's the update to the story. Looks like the cars were actually seized and being sold with only 30% going back to the owner of the Ferrari and 70% to the M6. That has to suck.

Pure comedy gold

I can't understant one thing, why the hell doesn't Government make it mandatory for the manufacturers to restrict the speed to 100 kms/hr since the max speed limit is 100 kms on majority of canadian hwys.

Ferrari - 50% to part owner not involved, 30% to owner involved, and 20% to province.

M6 - 70% to owner, 30% to province.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 430 Scuderia for over $250,000. Who's the ace reporter that figured out it was $400,000? Fail. How many other "facts" are wrong in this story?

Looks like the BC government made a few pennies on these impounds.

I seem to remember the regular 430 costing more than 250K new with taxes in...

I would have estimated somewhere in the low to mid 300s, 400 is definitely on the high side though. I am sure they just rounded up to make it seem more dramatic.

How is it even legal for the province to auciton off this car? I can understand them seizing it for 7 days or whatever and then slapping the owner with a big fine to get it out but how can they auction off someones property?

under a zero-tolerance bylaw for street racing. Race it and you could lose it.

That's pretty shocking and should definitely send a message to everyone else in the province as a warning.

Can't believe they're actually gonna auction off their cars, how brutal is that. Fucking government cash grabbing.

What do you think a better solution would have been? Each of them being fined $1000 (or a few thousand)? I don't think that would deter the owners of a Ferrari/M6 in any way.

I'm not really disputing the punishment, although that's what I typed, I just hate the government always coming down with a punishment that benefits them as well.

Why not suspend their license for two years... that'll teach em, but that wouldn't put any money in the govs pocket.

That's a very nice color on the Ferrari.

Not condoning it but there's a time and place for going over the speed limit so these guys are stupid for doing it during the morning.

I'm just saying, for example, on a deserted 3 lane highway at 3am in the morning with NO cars in sight, only under those circumstances, then MAYBE you can push it a little hahaha  :burnout:

Taking someones $250k + Car is retarded in my books and even though what this guys did is dumb I'm hoping his lawyer can do something for him. A 6 month - 1 year liscence suspension + a stiff fine should do the trick but not taking someones property away :banghead:
