Pretty cool to see that people can actually work well together in traffic.. this would probably not go over well in calgary.

Well no shit.... Been sayin this for years....

Too many rules, and people forget how to drive, and of course, no traffic engineer is as smart as the guy making the driving decisions.

It's like this all over europe.

Combining that with this:

Would be a disaster. You have to remember this was done in Europe where there are good drivers and Alberta where there are bad drivers.

We live in Alberta. Truckers and people who always wait to reach home for their washroom trip, would not let this system work here. But will be nice if it does!!!!

Maybe the problems with Alberta are two fold:
1) Driver education and difficulty to obtain a license. My buddy (asian dude) failed 3 times at AMA, went to this mom and pop ricer run place, got his license the first time. Should he really be on the road?
2) We assume everyone is an idiot. Why not TRY to see if it works before we put it down? All these laws which are meant to protect us from ourselves are just causing us to pay less attention. Case and point (a) studyin Montana that showed highways without speed limits cause people to go slower, and result in less accidents and deaths and (b) study in Winnipeg (? posted here) that showed adding red light cameras made intersections more dangerous. Let people THINK and drive how they think is safe, and I'd be shocked if accidents went up. Police keep cramming more and more regulations down our throat, run a great PR campaign to scare people, but NEVER actually release results about whether their new money making programs have made the roads safer.

Looks like a great idea but:

- we dont train drivers like Europe
- we dont believe in equality/socialism in Canada like the UK (too many people here think if they have a big/fast/expensive vehicle that they have the right of way)

There's alot of nice drivers in calgary who give way and this idea could work but only in places where there is a single lane going each direction as getting two drivers on the same side to coordinate would be more difficult.

Part one of Pollywogs video post is very interesting, too:

lBcz-Y8lqOg&playnext=1

(Why oh why can't I get it to embed? I tried C&P'ing the URL into the [ youtube ] thingy in the reply box, I tried C&P'ing the "embed" code into it, and I also tried the Video number only from the URL, but nothing works :dunno: )

Edit: Fixed!

Hysterical - and goes a long way to explaining Asian driving behaviour (guess de-regulated roads wouldn't work too well here, after all... )

You are only supposed to include the code right after "v=" in the youtube URL up to but NOT including the "&"

In your example, it would be "lBcz-Y8lqOg"

Beautiful, common sense and decency in action, it makes sense how it works, but if they did it here, I wouldn't go out on the roads, not for a few months while everyone crashes into each other then finally figures out you have to pay attention when you drive.

I wonder how this would work at blackfoot and heritage or some other higher speed intersection.

i think that naturally the flow of traffic would slow down when approaching an intersection and then speed up again once through. although all the videos seem to show downtown or lower speed areas. if the system was implemented everywhere, that would be the sensible way to approach and intersection regardless of speed. even slowing down vs a stop would likely prove to have better travel times.

You guys gotta stop thinkin that people are inherently stupid and need special training to drive a fucking car.

It's easy.

Let them DRIVE, and they will surprise you.

Treat them like Children, and we get whet we get here now... traffic, nerves, and bs.

I didnt get special training....

Went to Germany for a vacation.

Hopped behind the wheel, and was WOAH! WTF! I even posted about it. I think I called their driving style "orchestrated chaos".

With in an hour or two, I was driving like a European.

i just came back from vietnam.. in Hanoi the traffic is insane, as well as the rest of the country. there are essentially no rules, no lights, and no stop signs. drivers manage, but it's not all daisies and daffodils. it's dangerous, people die every day on those roads, and it is the furthest from what I would call safe or 'polite'. it is complete mayhem and pedestrians are completely fucked as well. in a short practice it might go ok, but if it was implemented everywhere for everyone it would go bad, very fast.

Asians.... nuff said ;)

But you guys are going between t extremes...

Our extremely over regulated system, versus completely lawless/without consequence....

No on is suggesting that.

Thats why they suck as drivers...Add the poor folks sharing the roads on bicycles / scooters and well...there's your video.
