Beyond F1 Xbox Championship - Race 1

So, we'll do both a driver's championship, and a 2 driver team championship, to make it realistic haha. We'll determine race date/times as we go along, since everybody has different schedules. We'll make things easy for the first season, and if we get hardcore (and good) enough, we'll turn on damage, as well as fuel/tire sim, pitstops, etc. No point in making things impossible so early on.

Race #1 - Bahrain GP
Date + Time - Monday Oct 18, 2010 9pm. I will invite people to the custom game starting at 9pm, and start Qualifying at 9:15pm or when everyone is there. Add me to xbox live so I can invite!
Driver Aids - All Allowed
Damage - None
Collisions - Full
Fuel and Tire sim - Off (no pits required)
15 min Quali, 20% Race Distance
All cars identical (basically time trial mode performance)
Grid will be filled with AI cars in Intermediate skill level.

We're playing the first one easy. Let everyone get used to it first. Once we get through the first season, we'll all vote on the changes (distance, tire/pit sim, fuel sim, damage, etc).

Let's just get through the first season first, make it so everyone can just drive and not worry, and have fun. Frustration comes later! LOL

You can bridge from your laptop to your xbox if you dont want to spring $100 for the adapter

If you're just picking up the game, you'll need to spend a good solid 4 hours to get used to the game, learn the track, and play with setup a little to get something you're comfortable with.

The way the game is designed, you'll have similar laptimes with different downforce setups. There are 6 levels, ranging from high to low. The only customization you really need to do to gain time would be gear ratios to make sure you have enough revs for top speed for that particular track, and that you're hitting peak revs at top speed. It's an easy adjustment, with each gear showing the top speed potential.

High downforce is usually a little bit slower, but your car is much more stable especially over curbs. Full low downforce setups you'll have a mugh higher chance of spinning over curbs, and that's basically going to cost you at least 6 seconds, assuming no traffic.

We'll be playing with equal car and no tire sim mode, so the car handling/setup can be tested in time trial mode. That means a Lotus will have the same performance as the Ferrari. The car will feel exactly the same as time trial mode throughout qualifying and the entire race.

Agreed. Play around with a setup you're comfortable with. Also try out wet conditions to get a feel of that, as ewll.

It takes some time to get used to the game play, especially if you play games like Forza. I tried career mode first, got 10th in qualifying in Bahrain. Then right after that I did about 3 hours of multiplayer with my friend, just trying out the tracks and setups. Went back to career mode right after, and was getting pole position and winning the race by a long shot. Practice makes perfect!

Gage clocked a 1:50 hotlap and is consistent in the 1:51's. He lost some time in S2 on that 1:50 lap too and thinks he can break into the 1:49's, which I don't doubt.

One thing, you did say all driving aids are on, does that include auto tranny? If I dont get my wheel I am going to need to be able turn that on.

You can use auto tranny if you want. To run a 1:50 lap you definately need to be in manual mode.

We're playing with TC on. We haven't progressed to TC off yet.

There is a LOT of time to be gained in 7, 8, and 9. I'm guessing that's where you're losing most of your time. It took Gage and I about 50 laps of experimentation to find more and more time. If you take it properly, you can take turn 9 in 3rd gear, even with the lowest DF settings. This series of corners is the toughest to do consistently. The trick is to go as hard as possible into 7, sacrafice speed in 8 to get a good entry into 9.

Turn 19 is also a good one to gain a lot of time, since it's the exit to a long straight. I try to go slow in, and fast out. Gage goes fast in fast out and kills me there.

Turn 20 is just tough to nail down consistently. Ranks as my 2nd most inconsistent corner. Again, you need to carry a lot of speed into 20, because you're going uphill and accelerating through that section fairly slowly. Any loss of speed in 20 will mean a lot of time lost afterwards.

More tips on how to go fast. Download the record TT laps to use as a ghost, and you'll learn a lot from the record holders by simply following them.

Look at the leaderboards in Time Trial selection screen. Select the top time. It'll let you download the ghost.

If you're understeering like crazy, you're not trail braking. You'd be surprised at how much more grip you have to actually turn when you let off the brakes, even with ABS. Of course, that's how I manage to spin all the time even with TC on haha.

Yes, I spin with TC on too.

It is so hard to get the feel right. Maybe I need a more expensive wheel pedal combo. haha. More fucking money.

I do admit, my left foot is pretty blunt. I could do with more feather like control as I get deeper into the corner.

The ABS seems to lock up the wheels. Wonder if brake sizing has any effect.

I do all my braking in a straight line, then turn and accelerate through the corner. If I am ever braking and turning at the same time bad things happen.

I move it to + after turn 3 and back to - after turn 22.
It seems to help laps times a bit.

When experimenting with the suggested braking lines I do find that alot of turns, particularly in sector 1, you can dive in alot later and wider than suggested and max acceleration out of the corner when your wheel straightens. Like taking a turn in a "V" shape. However, I do find alot of the wider sweeping turns, it is good to stay closer to the suggested line if not on it and trail brake/neutral throttle as needed.

Well. What an afternoon. I am going to have to drop out for tonight.

I went to Eb to trade in my ps3 version and get the 360 version. First they were out of the 360 version, no big deal, but what would you trade mine in for (I was thinking around $30.00) but no.... Her system is saying $6.00. She calls and there is a glitch and she is told that no stores can trade in the ps3 version.

Go to futureshop just to buy it.... And they are out.

Go home and call the guy who I was going to get the wheel from tonight and he said he looked and looked last night and couldn't find it.

Long story short, I have the ps3 version with no wheel and can't find a 360 version.

OK just did a simulation race at 20%, even with tire sim off, you HAVE to pit once to change tires during the race.

Fuck that game. First I lose 10 places in quali because two guys brake at totally inappropriate times.

Then I get DQed during the race for a retarded string of bad luck. First I spin and get called on corner cutting. Then I dodge a two car accident and get penalized for illegal pass, there's a drive-through. Then Schumacher, for the 2nd time, brakes at a retarded spot and I rear-ended him, another drive-through.

So despite all that I manage to come back from 11th to 6th and I'm in clean air all around.

The last straw? A fucking warning for corner cutting that the stewards reviewed and decided to DQ me for.
