View Full Version : Toyota FT-86 Rebadged as a Scion
Pending the powertrain is still a 2.0T RWD and lightweight I'd buy one.

Ya lots of hype but I think that is partly because it's projected to be a cheap sports car. Overall I still like it, although I'd never buy the first or even second year of a brand new vehicle.
Those wheels are still ugly as hell.

IF it has all the promised specs, $25,000 is a very attractive price. I guess there aren't too many sub $30K sporty rwd cars out there. The closest competitor would be the RX8?
Love the stance

Reasoning? It's $25K... It's the price of my Mazda 3, Mitsu Lancer, Hyundai Genesis, Chev Cobalt, etc. Any "sports car" under $30k is VERY reasonable.
I think it should keep that price, just as long as it has some good HP numbers :D

This is the reason why Toyota and Honda is doesn't serve the sport compact crowd any more.
Selling to enthusiasts just isn't profitable. They engineer a car that have the same effort as you would designing a Corolla but has 100x less buyers. AND then the buyers want it cheap.
I'm skeptical of their $25K claim. Something got to give at that price point. It would not be the FT86 promised at that price. The only way this will happen if the platform can be shared with multiple lines like the Nissan FM.
There is no way a Japanese company can deliver at this price point that can match Genesis or Mustang.

you're dreaming if you actually think stupid toyota will actually sell it for around 30k. Lets look at the last celica gts with their wonderful Tsunami package. That gutless wonder was selling for just north of 38k. And you think that they will actually give you something that is rwd and better for 30k? Fat chance! those retards will sell them here for around 50k.
Toyota= GM time to go bankrupt

Well, we are basing these arguments on fictional prices right now.
I would never spend anything more than $35k on this car, VERY well loaded.
Only time will tell... :)

Genesis is just over 35k for their top model and that's about as good as it gets for performance vs. dollar in that price range. Especially with this being a Toyoto, there is no way in hell it will be lower.
The hype is built that the price is going to be low and that Toyota is actually releasing a sports coupe. Either expect a shit box or to pay more than you're thinking.
As Xtrema said, something has to give, and it will. At 25,000, something definitely will be giving. Be interested after a year or two how it's doing. Until then, meh.

:werd: The biggest critics of Toyota aren't even their target demographic. Simplicity is Toyota's selling feature. Performance is mostly demanded by those who have no intention of buying it. Why is Lexus more popular than a better all around Infiniti? Simplicity.

You guys are all missing one key pricing point. All relevant prices are listed in US Dollars. Canada is its own ball game. Even if Toyota sells it for under $30K in the US, you can guarantee that the Canadian version will be closer to $40K

This could actually wind up being good: http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2011/1101_toyota_extending_subaru_product_sharing_to_highlander_tribeca/index.html
Toyota tackles the problem with the upcoming FT-86 rear-wheel-drive sports coupe by going with a Subaru pancake engine -- the STI's 305-horsepower, 290 pound-foot version of the 2.5-liter turbo four, our source says. Earlier reports had the FT-86 launching with less-powerful Subaru engines. Toyota's development costs have ballooned, however, and the FT-86 is now seen as a mid-$20s car rather than a sub-$20,000 car.

no doubt. That would kill sales for the STi. I dont like the direction subaru is going. I highly doubt the FT86 will get the EJ257. Maybe the new engine from the 11' forester

Subaru is smart enough not to alienate a core group of enthusiasts. If they do release the Coupe I would expect it to be much more expensive than the WRX STi sedan or hatchback just for the 'sports' coupe image.
It would make much more sense if Toyota rebadged the Subaru variant in different markets as a Celica GT4 though...

The move would help bolster the struggling brand, which has been a bit product-starved of late.
What about Toyota's struggling sales...... even if they make a variant.. this would've been a car to bring them back up in sales. Now they want to divide the sales to their Scion division..

Their 370Z competitor i guess.
Seems like a "version" for Scion will mean there will still be a toyota "version"... maybe they'll even make a Lexus version as well... like they did with the Corolla.
