View Full Version : No Shell V Power for N54 (335xi)?

So BMW Gallery service advisory told my buddy with a 335xi to avoid using V Power or Shell gas in general to avoid HPFP failures.

N54 peeps, is this true or just stinking pile of BS?

Semi-educated guess? Bunk.

Pump failures are caused by over-working, right? So he's saying that more Shell fuel is required to make the same amount of power as others. Husky aside, I imagine the potential energy in most fuels is within a few percent of each other and don't see a specific type of fuel actually being a problem.

They also told my mom to avoid the 94 at husky. So what, we have to get fuel at Petro or Esso??? Bunch of bs if you ask me.

I should say my mom's 335xi has gotten shell Vpower for most of its life. 30,000 km and still on the original HPFP. Better than some people I know. LoL

Husky has more ethanol, which has less energy and actually does require more fuel to make the same power. Whether it's enough to cause failures, I don't know.

Either way, run whatever 91 fuel you want and when the pump fails don't let BMW try and blame anyone but themselves.

We have been running 94 in my moms 2010 135i since the start. The HPFP failed when I was driving it at exactly 17001km on the odometer. They have never said anything to us about what type of fuel to use.

Just stay away from fuels with Ethanol in them. I had major issues with my 335 until I stopped using Husky Gas. I use Shell V power all the time now and no issues at all. Ethanol eats some seal in the HPFP and causes failures from what I have read.

The majority of people the have issues with the HPFP are people that use ethanol based fuels (at least on e90post.com)

Haha. Costco & Superstore gas FTW.

The only time that I now use Husky or Shell is when going to the track. Otherwise it is Costco or Stupid Store.

Who told your mom this? I'll look into there reasoning. Why would they have reason to bs about this? You have me wondering :)

One of my friends has an n54 335i and he uses esso primarily he's had quite a few pump failures.

The interesting thing that still baffles me is why is this not happening in Germany as well.....

Especially south part of the country are all in high altitude mountain ranges with elevation similar to Calgary.

Talked to the shop foreman as well as 2 service advisors and they all recommend V power.

in the past 10 years, and 3 new cars, I have tanked them all with NOTHING BUT Shell, and never ever had issue's. 99.99% of all the gas I buy is Shell.

That's BS... I been getting my Gas from different stations around town for the past 2 1/2 years, and i am on my 3rd HPFP on my 335i....

EDIT: It could be 4th, i lost count:D

I was looking into buying a 335i sedan for daily driving. I'm glad I saw this thread. My M3 has had less problems and is like 7+ years older.

Just talked to another Calgary BMW 335 owner. He was advised no Mohawk and Husky. My friend in the original post must have got them mixed up with Shell.

At least that makes more sense.

Yah I can understand Mohawk or Husky as ethanol is hard on fuel pumps.

Land Rover told me to stay away from Macs/711/Safeway/Co-op etc. besides, petros and shells are closer to my place, so it's not a problem.

The handle at Costco and superstore say Husky so I assume they are reselling husky fuel?

I suspect that the majority of fuel in this City is from one supplier with specific mix of additives added to meet each retailers needs.

Neat.

Husky is also a large energy company that has quite a few gas stations that sell ethanol blended gasoline.

Wow 2010s are still suffering from this? Why do they blame the gasoline for this issue when it's clearly a design fault? Why don't other 300HP turbo cars have this issue?

Sorry this is just ignorant me ranting. I was very close to getting a 535xi but no more...

I was going to say N55 will be better but a quick google seems to say people with N55s are having the same HPFP failures on their 2011s.

no one blames the gasoline. It's a well know
fact that it's a design flaw in the pump. Many manufacturer do not
recommend ethanol blended gases
especially if the vehicle is having fp issues.

Question #2

Absolutely not! The majority of the gasoline and diesel sold within the province of Alberta is manufactured by Esso, Shell, and Petro-Canada. The fuel we sell is produced by these major oil company refineries - so it is virtually the same. However, some oil companies add chemicals to gasoline marketed through their own facilities.

The Canadian General Standard Boards (CGSB) specification establishes the quality of gasoline and diesel being sold in Canada by all companies.
