After 5 summers of owning my S2000, I decided to part with the car. My primary potential replacements were the Lotus Elise (for fun factor) or Infiniti FX35 (more family vehicle).

During the Thanksgiving long weekend, my hubby and I took a trip out to Vancouver to visit some friends. We came across this gem at the dealership and couldn't pass up on the deal (2008, only 471 kms, full protection package, $12 XXX off asking MSRP). Last weekend, we flew back to Van city and drove the car home.

Needless to say, I'm loving it so far

Minor update: Cars were detailed for several hours in anticipation of a photoshoot. Purchased double DIN and dash kit. Install this weekend.

STI and Evo. That's a really cool combo.

Thanks, we're enjoying them so far.

Both cars are similar yet different. Our initial impressions:

-Evo engine feels smoother, STi feels a little rougher
-STi has more pull on a straight line
-Evo outshines with handling, corners, less body roll etc.
-Evo suspension is stiffer
-STi exhaust is  compared to the Evo
-Evo seats are  compared to the STi
-Fuel consumption for both...:(

The STi is my hubby's car, the Evo is mine. For this reason, he does what mods he wants to his and I do what I want to mine. It's funny because he tends to lean towards audio mods with his cars and I prefer exterior/interior cosmetics lol.

However the majority of the time he drives whatever he fancies on the day as I get dropped off downtown for work and then he heads to his work that has parking out front.

You guys didn't want to go after the mr?

carzcraz
10-24-2010, 02:52 PM
On a straight line the Evo may be quicker on paper, but the STi feels faster. Could just be the driver too though as I'm still getting used to it lol.

Not sure if this is true as well, but the turbo on the Evo seems to kick in at a lower rpm.

Phenix: I was not interested in the MR as I was not ready to give up driving stick. The GSR is also a little more mod friendly.

Just too bad thye have put a six speed in the thing yet. That's what stopped me from getting one. But at least the gsr is a more reasonable price

Lol we were just as puzzled as well. Seemingly, the car actually had an owner before us. This car was purchased as a second vehicle and was hardly driven because the previous owner walked to work or drove his other car. He didn't want to put any mileage on the car and wanted to keep it in brand new condition (there were still stickers inside the car...glovebox, visors from delivery, owners manual and other manuals were kept in a Ziploc bag!!). Unfortunately, due to unforseen financial difficulties, he could no longer afford payments on the Evo.

The funny thing is, this was exactly the story behind my S2000. Only difference is that this owner put 43 xxx km's on the car in the 5 years of his ownership.

Sorry, yes that was what I meant - the two cars (summer and winter) that we sold when I took possession of the Evo.

Mods wise, I still have to try and figure out. I'm just finding my way onto the Evo sites. It feels a little weird having been a lurker on s2ki.com for 5 years.

RA mudflaps are on order from Tristan and my husband is definitely pushing to have the retune done. I'll also be sourcing out a front lip for the car in the near future too but I'm not too sure what kind yet.

heavyD: My main priority was finding an X in WW. I'm pretty sure we would have passed on this vehicle had it been a different colour. Personally, I think the Evo's look good in all the colours, but just slightly nicer in white.

I suggest the drop in filter and cobb access port to start! Not as extreme as that black car we drove but definatly helps that low RPM lag that stock evos are known for.

Actually that's something that I'm definitely looking at doing as well. Not a big fan of the small wing. From what I gather, I will need to have two extra holes drilled in in addition to the existing holes in order to make the taller wing fit?

Also, should I only be sourcing out an OEM one or will others fit too?

4doorj
10-27-2010, 10:46 PM
I hate the small wing so I upgraded recently. When I checked around, buying OEM was almost 2 grand. I also tried shopping for a used one across the border but it cost sooo much for shipping it wasn't worth it. So I ended up buying a seibon MR wing from speedtech. It looks soooo much better. And yes you have to drill more holes.

carzcraz
10-28-2010, 05:59 PM
Thanks for the info 4doorj! I'm assuming that the Seibon screws fit directly into the existing holes from the OEM spoiler?

Time to go shopping :burnout:

Only one hole fit on each side. I had to drill two extra holes each side.

They definately help in the winter with all the rocks on our streets but I would advise getting the rear door lower right 1/3 covered in larger 3M (compared to the factory piece that is too small) as well as the end of the sideskirt as Shadow tint did for me. That area get's beat up bad and if you don't have protection it will chip up. The reason Mitsubishi changed to the wider sideskirts in 2010 was to protect that area from chips.

carzcraz
11-03-2010, 10:06 AM
heavyD, that's a good suggestion!

I knew that these cars were notorious for rock chips... I already have 7 of varying sizes on my rear doors and left sideskirt prior to the RA's. This was incurred in 500 km's of city driving!!!

Are you able to provide me with an estimate on how much you were charged by Shadow Tinting to get this job done? Pm is fine if you prefer :)

Thanks

Evo - custom rear spoiler, Rexpeed V-style front splitters, Redline goods shift boot and arm rest cover, Perrin stubby antenna, front fog light tint, JDM front plate, Evolution plate frame

Thanks again! If I had a choice, I may have done without the front plate. However with the Evo being from B.C. to remove the front plate holder would leave 3 plugs in place where the holes were drilled into the bumper. This I thought would be a good, cheap solution lol.

Both of the cars are beautiful!
Im sure it will take some time to get used to the new car, but I would sitck to opensource tuning over the cobb ap. if your strictly looking for getting the car tuned, My buddy and i just got cars tuned by Sunny (airboy), who is one of the most amazing tuners i have ever had experience with (in the subaru game).
Sunny is getting into tuning evo's and has done a couple 9's,8's, and X's.
I would seriously suggest giving him a call even for a stage 1 tune, im sure your husband has heard of him if he is on westernsubaruclub.
If you want some more info about getting the most potential out of your car I know a couple who owns twin X mr's that have been modded together and got their cars tuned together by Sunny. The results were incredible!

Anyways, pm me if you want a little info, I am envious of your garage!

Good choice. Thinking of doing the same S2K > EVO.

The thing that kills me though is I really want a 9. Unfortunately you need almost $30,000 for a low mileage, unmolested, unmodded, 5 speed (non-mr 6 speed bullshit) evo 9. Its unbeleivable how they hold their price. Lots of Evo Xs in that price range (US).

Might have to settle for an 8 and swap a 9 turbo. MIVEC is pretty useless anyway as its only VTC and only on the intake cam.

When I was getting the S2K in the states, I hadn't seen evos before and I tried racing one... Ever since then I wanted one. :D

You are better off getting an EVO X over an IX. For the money they are asking for used IX's it's not worth it. EVO X's are much more liveable as a DD as the VIII and IX's are even more sparse and unforgiving. Although coming from an S2K you may be used to that ha ha.

That's actually what I want. I have gotten quite used to the S2000 and I don't mind a car that has squeaks, rattles, so long as it performs. As far as reliability goes EVO X> EVO 9, the interior is better, better AWD too.

The weight just kills it for me though. My S2000 is currently around 2800lb. I could get used to 3200lb (evo 9). But 3600lb, thats a stretch for sure.

Well honestly it doesn't feel like a 3500 lb car but yeah the IX feels lighter. The IX is definately the more hardcore car it's just really hard to find an unmolested one at a fair price.

carzcraz
02-08-2011, 01:38 PM
I agree with heavyD. The X's power more than makes up for its weight to still make it a quick car and reviewers have all commented on the impressiveness of its handling.

The IX was a very fun car to drive as well though!

I'll probably end up going S2000 > 5.0L Mustang w/ blower

I won't ever be able to give up RWD, it's a huge part of what makes the car fun to drive. Puttering around with the F20C makes me want to move up to a giant fuck off motor.

I don't see myself parting with it for a long, long time though. Still waiting to see what Ford has in stored for the 50th anniversary of the mustang.

The previous owner of my car sold it to me because he wanted an Evo. He didn't drive the Evo for long and last I heard he regretted selling the S2000.

Um, thanks for the tip. As wonderful as the 5 years I owned my S2k and babied that car was (and it was a damn good car), I have not missed it a day...nor would I consider a second or equivalent (we were close to purchasing an Elise) as there are plenty other cars out there to experience and enjoy.

Plus I'm really enjoying the slightly increased practicality and out-of-the-box power and performance of the car. No more having to own 3 cars and a truck :nut:

Thanks again V6-BoI! Surprisingly, I haven't seen too many Evo's roaming around..at least in the NW.

Anyway, hubby and I are heading to Japan in a few weeks...any suggestions from anybody for small mods I may be able to pick up for either car??

Lastly, I wanted to say "hi" to the guys I spoke to very briefly at Spy Hill today. My apologies as I didn't catch your names and the car wash was extremely loud inside!

No worries, that was us at Spyhill Car Wash XD it was indeed freezing and definitely a treat to see the car in person. I noticed the Evo/ recognized it the moment we pulled in; I had to say hi haha =D Also, it was quite coincidental since we were just viewing this thread at the uni earlier in the morning XD

Hi! It's funny that you recognized the car as I noticed you immediately when you pulled into the parking lot. My initial reaction was that you were driving one of my husband's previous cars. He also had an RSX, red w/ yellow fogs...I absolutely LOVE RSX's btw and attempted on several occasions to get him to purchase another!

Just didn't want you to think that I snubbed you guys! I could barely hear or see you amidst the fog/mist in there and the crazy Spy Hill worker was lurking by us haha.

Hello! Yea, the minute we pulled in, I was like O.O!!! It's the Evo XD! I wanted the Murano in front of me to leave so that I could get a better look XD The car sounds really good  . No worries at all, it was really foggy in there but still good to meet other Beyond members/ car enthusiasts=] Have a good trip in Japan :D! Perhaps we'll see you at the Spy Hill Car Wash again when the weather is a bit nicer XD...and yup, he was lurking us pretty hard lol.

I think I've seen your car at Uni. On Friday's do you drive off campus like around 1230-1 around there? Think I saw your car yesterday around that time driving by ICT/new engg building

Yea, I think I've seen you around the Uni as well =] Usually I'm rushing to and from class. Yesterday, I wasn't at school so you must have seen another person's car but I do usually take that route:) However, we should definitely meet up =D! Are you also a business major?

Very minor update: With the awesome weather this weekend, we each spent 4.5 hours washing, cleaning and applying sealant to our cars in anticipation of nicer spring weather and a photoshoot.

Also purchased a double DIN DVD screen and received my double DIN dash. Install this Saturday!

*Pics removed in anticipation of some proper photoshoot takes*

Looking good, but that license plate just has to go. This isn't Japan.
