Wanted to pick one up for the office and house, just not sure where to go to get a decent one. Or ss there even a difference between them all? Seems like a press is a press...

I just picked up a 3-cup Bodum Press from Home Sense. Works great and inexpensive. Also picked up some double layered cups... these are a must have. So light!

These have them at Starbucks now, more of a "travelers edition" as it has a durable plastic moulding around the glass.

Be careful separating the holder from the glass when washing. Had one explode in my hands last week and wow did that do a lot of damage.

+1

I have a Bodum as well. Mine is double-walled... keeps the coffee warmer, longer.

Consider some of the smaller details, like the fit of the press, the density (?) of the mesh in the press, a filter over the spout, dishwasher safe, etc.

Even the better presses are inexpensive, so might as well spend just a little more to get all the "features".

Has anyone tried a vacuum press?

Starbucks carries a bunch of different kinds and Ive never had the glass explode. Im currently using an insulated one that is all metal. Keeps the coffee hot

So I checked out Bodum's website and holy fuck, they have a million types.

Just get the cheapest? Are some shatterproof?

Double walled stainless. Will never break, keeps your coffee hot, and looks balling!

This one is apparently the best (at least when I was looking, according to the coffee aficionados)

I have a 3 cup and an 8 cup - they are awesome. The glass is Pyrex I believe.

Home Outfitters carries both of them, and they always have those 20% off coupons in the paper. I think the 8 cup is $35 and the 3 cup is $25.

Mark is the 8 cup one good enough to make smaller amounts too? Really don't feel like buying both.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah that's the one that I had that exploded in my hand. It was an unpleasant day for me. I'm definitely going for stainless this next time.

Ikea = cheap exploding french press.

Sorry I missed this question because the thread got moved.

I use the 8 cup to make a large mug of coffee all the time, it works perfectly as far as I can tell. I never make the 8 cup maximum, it's usually about 1/3 full. It just keeps you covered if you ever want to make good coffee for a bunch of people.

Remember also that a "cup" is very small. For a decent sized mug I use 3-4 "cups", or about 1/3-1/2 of the 8 cup press' volume.

The 3 cup is too small if you are used to large (~0.5L) coffee mugs. The 4 cup would probably be perfect but I couldn't find one locally, so I just bought the 8 cup.
