Why are there always cars at Highway 1/ Cochrane overpass

There are always cars lining the side road by the gas station just west of this overpass. I've seen it thousands of times, but I have no idea whats going on there. The little diner there can't possibly be that busy all the time.

Anyone know what all these cars are doing there?

In the summer, it's a great place to meet up and then drive out to your hiking spot in only one vehicle, also great for going to louise/sunshine in the winter to avoid getting f'ed on park passes.

^^Yep exactly. We do it a lot actually. Park fare is one reason but with so many coming from all over the city, it makes no sense to take 1 or 2 people per vehicle when you're going to be driving at least another hour or more.

I probably park there at least a couple times every year.
Perfect meeting spot for anyone coming from Airdrie and north, Okotoks and south, or anywhere in Calgary. Everyone going west has to pass by that intersection no matter where they start out.

Is it legal to just park on the side of the road there? Anyone have any problems?

I always wondered what it was about. I figured it was people who cycled along the highway, but I was just headed to Banff yesterday and noticed cars on the side, figured no1 would be dumb enough to cycle during yesterdays weather.

Nice to know the real reason.

I always wondered that too. I would never park my car there though. the roads out around banff are too much fun to leave it behind.

Also with all the Unicorns in Banff. you need to have your car there so you can watch in amazement!!!

It didn't used to be as noticeable because there used to be tons of parking on the northwest corner of the Humpty's. Now it's restricted for semis and you can only park about 7 cars in the lot before it gets full.

THANK YOU! I have wondered this myself. I always assumed there was some sort of activity and/or event in behind the gas station there.

I guess that does make sense... it just seems funny everyone decided to do the same thing. I guess there aren't a lot of other great places to park en route.
