Hey Guys,

So i've had a bunged up shoulder for a while, hurt it long time ago in hockey. Anyway now and then it gets so bad i have trouble even using my arm. It usually happens after drunk wrestling or sometimes just normal lifting at the gym, chest or shoulder day usually. It hurts to lift my arm more than 90* from my body.

I've mentioned it to my doctor but he's one of those cunty fucks that just try's to get you in and out ASAP. Last time he pretty much said stop being a vagina, lift lighter weight and take aspirin or advil in the morning and before work outs....... Now i cant remember which of the 2 he said? i'm assuming asprin but i wanna make sure.

Any one have any other tips on keeping it feeling good? ice after gym? It's frustraing as fuck when your buddies hassle you about the gym when you really cant do much about it.

Thanks.

I'm curious to see what the responses are. Drunk fighting left me in the exact same condition. Right arm feels weak and cannot lift very much past 90 degrees. Seems to have gotten better today.

I've got a great chiropractor and will let you know what he recommends after I see him.

I'll start this off by telling you to get see a physiotherapist to assess your actual injury as there is little I can do to assess this from here. They will be best at rehabilitating your injury.

Is the pain you feel in your deltoid muscle or is it on the top of your shoulder near the boney part/collar bone?

If the pain is in your deltoid than most likely you are looking at a rotator cuff injury. It is definitely a rotator cuff injury if you feel the pain the most during/after chest/shoulder work outs.

I would take advil for the pain/swelling and rest it for a good amount of time. Ice it after a workout/activity or when there is pain.

Before doing chest/shoulder workouts you must warm up the rotator cuff muscle to get blood flowing to that area so that it loosens up. You can start by putting a heating pad on that area for a good 15-20 minutes then start doing rotator cuff exercises with very low weights (2.5lbs at most). After its warmed up you can then try moving onto weight lifting. If it aggravates I would stop immediately.

hope this helps somewhat.

JfuckinC it sounds like you have the exact same problem I have. It basically boils down to an imbalance in muscles. If this is the case... well you are not going to be happy. I don't have time to write much as I have class real quick but I will leave you with some reading for now.

request an x-ray from your doctor. If he declines, see another doctor that will send you for one.

I hurt my shoulder 10 years ago when I used to lift weights. I had a lot of pain (similar to what you are describing) and it turns out I had a SLAP tear which required surgery.

I was thinking of goin to a physio guy this week, can tthey request X-Rays? or only an actual doctor..

I've been to the chrio/massage theripist and we didnt get too far with that route either..

Thanks guys.

Not sure if a physio can request the x-ray or not, but your family doc will be the one who writes the referral letter to the sports surgeon if there is an issue.

I'll tell you right now, I've had 3 back surgeries (with the last one being a full spinal reconstruction/fusion with titanium rods, screws and spacers) and the pain from those 3 surgeries COMBINED doesn't even come close to the pain I felt post surgery for the SLAP tear.

My spine surgeon said I have an extremely high pain tolerance ( I was off oral painkillers after day 2 of my back surgeries) and I was whimpering like a baby, begging for my mommy and morphine when I had my shoulder done. Just thinking about it has me tensing up my sphincter muscles.

Fuckkkkkkk, why did you tell me that  surgery seems scary as fuck to me.

My friend was outta commision for 3 months after his. I made an appointment with Micheal Westaway at Village Square Sports Physio for wednesday anyway. Heard he's pretty good so i'll try that out before i go back to my shitty doc...

it may not be as bad as some people here, it could just be a rotator cuff injury which is pretty common. i tore mine and after doing rotator cuff exercises my shoulder is stronger than it was before.

Well my biggest concern with the SLAP injury is the connection to the bicep. Last time my shoulder was REALLY bad(2 months ago) I couldnt even curl 20lbs with that arm and i could feel this really weird pull in my bicep... I should have dealt with this earlier lol

You hurt it dicking around lol... give it a week and see how that is...

I know the pain / more - doctors don't really know what the hell is wrong with mine... I had a 3rd degree sepatation (tore every muscle, ligament, tendon in my shoulder / some in my neck > shattered my shoulder basket, as well as other non shoulder injuries - I was told that I would never be able to use it properly, throw, work above my head... Jokes on them lol

Saw a "specialist" in Toronto... the most professional thing he said was either "hmmm", "thats weird", and "huh, really?" Collar bone chills in a few different places depending on what i'm doing, no limitation, no pain, no strength loss after I was out of the sling, no surgery/physio, and I gained a good 6"reach with my right arm lol... This was almost 5 years ago and since then I've been a firm beleiver in letting nature take its course (to a point, if you are dying in pain - go to a doctor lol). It's like adapting to an environment almost lol

haha gretz its an old injury that comes back from time to time, sometiems REALLY BAD sometimes just minor.. I've tried to let it heal on its own but it always seems to come back, i too like the idea of letting stuff heal. But this has got to the point of such frustration i need to take it to the next step.

Sounds like my wrist... people tell me I have calcium build-ups, tendonitis, carpol-tunnel (sp?) etc... (i've been around the block a few times lol) > Its reoccuring, sometimes pretty bad... I just take it easy until its nearly gone and start gradually using it more and more without thinking about it *pow, gone* lol...

If I were to go to a doctor, they would tell me this / that / the other is wrong - take pills, goto surgury / physio from some Joe to try and fix the problem he's read about (not had in most cases)... Personally, I'll take the odd and end pains to not go and let them placebo you (made up my own term lol) into thinking its problem A, when really its problem B...

I also found with most injuries, ailments, "issues" - if you find a way to get your mind off the issue (as hard as that may be), it tends to just go away...

Lol THE Dr. Me and a friend went there. We both personally thought he was a quack. He is good post MVA, at making you look like you're hurt more then you actually hurt but his treatments suck.

Really similar thing happened to me. I went to go see the physiotherapist at Aspen Landing (I'll look up his name), turns out he works with a ton of athletes, even proffesional ones. He taught me a number of stretches and exercises to strengthen the damaged muscles.

He went into great detail on what I did and what I can do to prevent further injury. He explained how I should stretch other muscles when doing shoulders/chest because of how they're interconnected.

For months I could hardly move my shoulders, I went to see him for 6 sessions (1/week) and after that I felt almost back to normal. He even explained what to do between my sessions to save me some money and make it so I don't have to come as much.

I highly recommend trying something like this.

Aspirin, if you don't have that take Ibuprofin (ie. Advil). Not necessairly for pain, but more for inflammation control.....but whatever you do, do not take Tylenol....

So I went to my chiropractor and he identified it as a sprain of the ligament that connects the shoulder to the arm right by the end of the collar bone. He told me 2 weeks of massaging it firmly with my fingers to promote circulation then icing should fix it.

I'll try it out and let you know how it worked.

I had issues with my right shoulder the last couple years. Stopped playing slow pitch, dodge ball, football etc. It clicks/rubs when I do arm circles etc.

Couple weeks ago my left shoulder started to act up. I don't believe it is a sports related injury. It did first start after one day I did shoulder presses. Right now it's rather sore and I can feel the tendons/ligaments making sounds.

I have auto immune disease, and have psoriasis arthritis. Am wonder if it's because the body is in inflammatory state leading to sore shoulders and knees.

Will go see a therapist in the next week or two.

I fucked up my neck / back / head while installing flooring in March of 2009, which resulted in blinding headaches for 30seconds to a couple of minutes. I've been to my Doctor 5-6 seperate times. I've had X-rays twice and a full CT scan and they came up with nothing.

I've researched it and come to the conclusion it is a cough type headache, which can be triggered by any exertion, coughing, constpated shits, bending over laughing etc. The treatment is dont cough, don't exert oneself, take laxatives and don't laugh.

This is obviously impossible, so I self medicate with Advil Liqui-Gels and they are the shit. They reduce the intensity or eliminate the headaches for a few hours at a time.

My shoulder has been in pain for the last 3-4 weeks. Pain when I sleep on one side, and pain when I try to lift the arm. Sometime its sore without doing anything.

When I got my back adjusted by my chiropractor today he told me that my acromioclavicular joint is out. Where the clavicle and the shoulder meet the ligament is strained and also my shoulder and back muscles on the left side is also aggravated. Annoying but just have to give it some time and then do some shoulder maintenance exercises.

Ya i've been going to physio since i made this thread. Getting it massaged, doing little work outs, getting some little electrical pulse thing put on it, and acupuncture now. I was told i ripped a muscle that goes from beneath my should blade over my shoulder and down the outside of my arm.

Feels a bit better, probably stop going soon and just keep up the excercises they taught me and slowly get back into lifting. I'm a bit skeptical though... i guess we'll see how this pans out. :dunno:

MOST of the time shoulder injuries are either:

Inflamed rotator cuffs (more specifically one of the four muscle of it)
or Shoulder impingement because of years of poor posture, and structural imbalances.

To many of us younger folk have the slouched shoulder look from years of sitting in front of a computer, or video games or whatever.

Our backs are far to weak, our chests/shoulders are far to tight AND ontop of that most of us bench, or shoulder press WAY more than we row or do back movements.

We might need a 2:1 ratio of back movements to chest or pressing to bring us in balance.

Stuff to think about and do google searches on.

JfuckinC, I'm going through the same pain as you right now. Except my pain is at the collar bone/ deltoid area. I THINK it all started from working out doing bench press quite a while ago. I warm up and stretch before every work out, but over time i felt like my right side was getting weaker and weaker in that area, i just had no "push" with that side. Whatever it was sore and hurting a bit, i laid off working out for a couple months.

Then a couple weeks ago, got into a little bar fight, punched someone with the same sore arm, after that my shoulder/ collar bone/ deltoid area has been hurting even more. I cant scratch my back with that arm and certain movements cause that area to hurt a lot.

I stretch it out every day and do rotating swings with that arm to try and loosen it up. I've laid off working out once again. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Don't stretch it or do swings right away!

Rest, and ICE. Take some Curcumin and a shit load of fish oil to combat the inflammation.
