Can you get the titanium exhaust without that foolish looking colouration?

That's actually a pretty good question! I don't think we ever have but I'll check on it for you tomorrow.

I think the Akra is a better choice too. Similar weight, power gains, and probably better quality, and a bit cheaper, but still $$$ :D
I love my akra on my bike. I assume car technology would be the same. My pipe wasnt cheap so I couldnt image what an exhaust kit costs

Why not go for a custom titanium through RevHard?/Unobtanium?

Akrapovic stuff is nice, I just like it because they blast it after welding to give it that "sheen" instead of polishing it. The welds are average, and they use h-pipes on some stuff still, but the consistent finish is somewhat unique. More prevalent on bikes.
The Gruppe M and Ericsson stuff is more my style though with nice welds and gentle pie-cuts. Requires more skill and is a sign of a dedicated fabricator. The tips with colour don't appeal to me as much, but that's personal.
I am doing an E90 M3 titanium exhaust in 2011, and it will be quite different from those made already. Honestly though, I don't do much car exhaust in Ti because aluminum is lighter for 1/8 the cost. If you want Ti it's to be unique, and something that will outlast the car.
It would be tough to decide between the top brands mentioned here though. If I couldn't do it myself, it would come down to the sound I think.
The ones that try to be very light go thin wall and that tends to have rasp and a "tinny" sound.

Yeah I dont like the OP's pic. I dont mid the very tip being burnt, but that is just way too much.
