Well i'm seriously considering starting a new project. My two main options are buying an AP1 S2000, saving and turboing it in the future (mid next year at the earliest), or buying a Miata and starting to piece together a turbo kit for spring.

The S2000 is going to be much more expensive not only to buy, but to upgrade, but it will be a lot newer. Insurance is also more expensive.

The Miata will be much cheaper, insurance will be cheaper, parts might be a little cheaper as well, however im concerned about the availability of aftermarket parts.

Thoughts?

Aftermarket parts? Miata? You are talking about one of the most RACED cars in the world. I think you'll be ok.

Definitely THE miata shop/store. And with the right additions, a Miata looks anything but gay.

I'd say the only thing the s2k would have over the Miata is looks, other then that the miata would beat it every other way when it comes to moddifying. V8 Monster Miata

While I'm not a big fan of Miata models. One thing I do know is that both S2000 and Miata models when it come to be racing in one of them ... both models tend to be over-rated and so many people out there having owned at least either one of them.

I mean, with a lot of aftermarket parts and tuned the engines to their max ... who is to say which is more over-rated? It's all down to a person's taste IMO.

The S2000 car is a great looking model in stock and with the right balance in applying what aftermarket part to use - it can be much better! Just try not to get too carried away too far! :D

I should add im going to be competing in Auto X and hopefully Solo 1 in the car, and I like to do Secret Street and some lapping as well. Will also not be driven in winter.

It sounds like you have so many more options with the Miata, but every time I see a guy in one (especially with the top down) all I think about is how gay he looks. Personally I'd rather drive a turquoise lumina van.

I bought a modded turbo miata for my wife. I have to admit that there is a huge negative stigma associated with being a guy and driving one, which made me think twice about driving it alone. But on the track it was soooo much fun. Nothing like passing guys in the little jelly bean.

In the end it was just too small for her and she didn't feel comfortable driving it.

I could care less what everyone thinks of the Miata, as long as I like it and enjoy driving it.

Funny you should say that Evan, its been done before, and I know someone who will pay $2000 for just the shell of my car haha, so it might be a possibility.

haha i remember i raced a blue miata with a 302 in it, near airdrie, we were side by side, but i think he had quite a few mods on it. Was funny, it had 5.0 badges on the side. That was in my s14, with a 2860rs at 11 psi hahahaha

mmm sr20 miata...or *ahem* s2000 is ok too i guess..... :D

I'm leaning towards the Miata for sure now. Going to be cheaper for sure, plus I want to prove all the haters wrong.

Not really interested in FWD with a V6 motor in the front of it. I would much rather put my money into something RWD and smallish.

Buy the miata, focus on suspension and brakes. Forget about the turbo and learn to drive. If you turbo on a budget youll like dnf all season and learn nothing but how to wrench.

It won't exactly be on a budget. I'm willing to invest as much money as I have into it, and I'm an automotive service technician student so I already know how to wrench. In terms of learning to drive I already have a good basis, I've done auto x, lapping, carting, drivers school, winter drivers school, a bit of race school.

None of what you just said changes what I recommended. Stick to NA, sort the chassis and learn to drive it at the track then worry about making it fast. Car will put down better lap times with a sorted chassis then by turbocharging.

V8 Monster Miata!!! You can get a built Ford 302 crate motor and the kit for less than $10,000 and the miata for a couple of grand. For $12,000 you have an absolute beast that will rape most things on the road.

Of course if you're serious about autox then a miata with suspension and wheels feels exactly like a go-kart. Cheap + fun. It IS super gay though, and you feel really gay while driving it. My friend has one that I've driven:

I don't want to put a V8 in one, leave the V8s to bigger cars. And at the very minimum it's going to have a built N/A motor, stock ones are great in the corners but for everyday driving I would get pretty bored.

If you're not going to do anything too crazy with the engine then I say go with the S2K, because that car's engine is unreal. I think it won best engine a few years in a row. If you're going to heavily modify though I'd say go with the Miata.

If you plan on auto x'ing the Miata, I wouldn't drop a new engine into it. When dropping in a heavier engine, it will throw off the weighting of the vehicle and affect its handling. It's already perfectly weighted front to back.

Instead, installing a turbo kit, along with a big FMIC, intake, and exhaust, you will probably be looking at 240bhp, which in a car that small is very quick.

What generation are you looking at in terms of the Miata?

Personally I like the R2's...

The 302 swap adds about 40lbs to the front which could easily be adjusted by corner balancing coilovers (assuming they're installed). Turbo+intercooler and everything associated isn't that much lighter.
