View Full Version : What oil are you using? And where are you getting it?

I figured since I pulled the battery off of the bike last weekend that maybe I should try to give my bike an oil change. I've never done a bike before but I've done many cars and trucks. I'm just not sure where to get oil for it? Where are you guys buying oil? What about filters?

Thanks.

Depends on what bike you have. Lots of riders are happy paying a premium on "motorcycle oil" (that you can buy in Canadian Tire or bike shops)...... while some arent.

Some bikes can run certain brands/type of car/truck oils just fine for the streets - check a bike-specific discussion group about this.

An example would be Shell Rotella, which many riders use.

I use rotella in my K6 with no problems.

AmsOil, and nothing but. ;)
I'll probably never sell my Triumph, so I may as well take remarkable care of it.
Motul makes excellent oil as well, but my bike runs noticeable cooler with AmsOil.

Can I ask, how do you clean the reuseable filter ?

I'm just using the Kawi synthetic 10w40. I don't know who makes it for them, but it seems good. Next oil change will be with Motul or AMS I think... unless I sell the bike in springtime, which is a possibility :(

I forgot I made this. I still haven't changed my oil yet lol. Anyways it's an 08 Ducati 848. I wouldn't mind stocking up a bit, are there any online places to order from? (Besides Amsoil)

I agree, never though to run it in the RC51 though. Use it in my Duramax and in the 996TT, planning on using it in the Lotus Esprit V8 as well.

Have been using Motul 300V in the RC51

I just buy mineral Yamalube and an OEM filter for my bike... I change the oil probably 2-3 times per summer, so it's not like the oil is in there long.

But because the R6 shares engine and gearbox oil, and I have a tendency not to clutch too many of my upshifts, I change it a lot.

Sorry, didn't see your reply till today.
Its a 35 micron steel mesh filter inside an aluminum filter body. Filter spins off normally, then the actual filter mesh comes out of the body.

I give it a quick rinse in kerosene/camping gas (or varsol at work). Inspect filter element and if anything is in it, it gets lightly blown out with compressed air (from the inside out). Clean off the magnet & toss it back on the bike.

Why would not clutching your shifts have anything to do with it?

I rarely use the clutch after getting going, up or down. Unless cruising slowly, if anything it puts less clutch material into the oil.

Yeah, but I figure it puts metal from the gears into it... It probably doesn't, now that I think about it, but there's gotta be wear on the gears when they just slam together without a clutch.

^Clutchless upshifts really don't affect anything if you do them right. If you upshift while the gears are loaded (i.e. while on the throttle), thats when there's more friction. If you can upshift smoothly and do it properly, it shouldn't wear at all.

Clutchless downshifts are a whole other story though. I wouldn't do too many of those, but maybe thats just me.

No, I clutch every downshift haha... And I roll off the gas on clutchless upshifts.

Bumping this up.

A couple of you guys mentioned Canadian Tire and GW. Anywhere else you guys are buying your oil locally? What about filters?

Honestly.. Whatever I have in my garage.

Motul 5100 10-40 Semi

Motul 7100 10-40 full syn

Suzuki racing oil 10-40 full syn

Gsxr rides like a top.

Bow cycle, walt healy when It was around... I dunno oil is oil. Cheap oil is the best oil.

Wix filters from either Rock Auto or Auto Value

Oil is made by CAM and is 10w40 with high levels of ZDDP for older vehicles.

Um, no. Try running cheap shit oil in a turbo engine and see what happens to the TBN after a few miles - compared to a full synthetic like Rotella T6.

Same with bikes, run lube with friction modifiers and start budgeting for a clutch.

So no, all oils are not equal.

In low power, light duty, non-severe service conditions you can get away with using recycled oil (cheapest oil contains % of recycled oil).

Kawi Supersyn from Kevie88 @ blackfoot motorsports w/OE filter in 07 GSXR750

Yeah, I should of rephrased what I meant. I'd use any oil that any local shop sells. Most of them are pretty good for motorbike clutches.

I go by price though... So far full synthetic Suzuki racing oil is the cheapest I've found. being around 9 bucks for a 1L.

I think motul is around $14?

When I was working at Walt Healy I just stocked up on full synthetic Suzuki racing oil... Now even my lawn mower gets it.

Honda dirtbike takes it in the engine, but I follow the manual and buy the $21 transmission oil for it..

Yeah, I buy my Amsoil from a local retailer too. Filters and everything, on my Primo stuff I use nothing but Amsoil, but on my other vehicles, I use whatever as all of 1/10 of a singular fuck is not given about those.

Where can you get non energy/resource conserving oil locally? Canadian Tire definitely doesn't have it, so maybe only bike shops?

^ you mean reprocessed/reclaimed oil? So basically reclaimed oil that's been heavily filtered and refined again?

T6 comes without the friction modifiers :dunno:
